MAY, THE FIFTH MONTH

May is named for the Roman goddess Maia, who ruled over the growth of plants.  The ancient Celts inaugurated this month with the festival of Beltane to encourage fertility in the newly sown fields.  Their exuberance lives on in May baskets, morris dancing, and cries of ‘Play Ball!’ at Little League fields in every community.  The month that begins with dancing around the may-pole ends with Memorial Day, a poignant reminder of the fragility and tenacity of life.

In Temperate northern latitudes, farmers and gardeners alike try to complete all seeding and planting by the end of the month, working around May’s unpredictable weather in a race with the calendar.  Old-timers get suspicious if the water in May is too balmy: ‘A snowstorm in May is worth a wagonload of hay,’ they counsel.

May brings a surge of energy that sets us to scrubbing, organizing, and airing out every corner of the house.  Outside, we clean and sharpen tools, load the wheelbarrow with plants, and trundle off to the garden.  By the end of the month, even those who live in the North are enjoying more than 15 hours of daylight each day.  We need every minute of it as we dance through the merry month of May.

Full Flower Moon is the name Native Americans gave to the full moon in May.  It was also known as the Full Corn Planting Moon or the Full Milk Moon, references to the fertility of the season.

Sign of the Zodiac:  Taurus (April 21 – May 20).

Element:  Earth

Quality:  Practical

This is to let you know that our Worthy Grand Matron Mary Owen here in New Mexico passed away late last evening.  She was not able to see all of her officers installed @ Grand Chapter last October.  In fact she was released from the hospital @ the time of her installation and had a fever of 105 degrees.  I believe she was only able to be present for 2 or 3 Official visits since her tenure began.

We have been blessed that our Associate Grand Matron, Kitt McKown has stepped up and has done so very well. We all know that she has her own plans to complete for her own year.

Sister Mary is survived by her husband and 3 daughters.

Thank you …

Dear Sisters and Brothers, you all have a special place in my heart, and words cannot express my gratitude for the many cards, calls, prayers and care you showered me with during my recovery.  The hip is almost 100% now, although I am still using a walker.  Fear I will have to forego doing the polka on May 17th, in fact, probably won’t even march in the Ballard Parade this year.

Again my sincere gratitude, you all speeded the healing process, and I love you all.

Sadness in the GC of Georgia

From several sources:

Sister Linda Drawdy, P.G.M. of Georgia was killed late last night (4/17) in an automobile accident.  She had been working in Kentucky and was on her way home to go to Florida Grand Chapter.  She ran off the road witnesses said and was killed instantly.  Please keep Georgia and Linda’s family in your prayers.

Sadness …

It is with sadness that we report the passing of Sharon Jennings.  She fought her cancer with a depth of inner strength we had long recognized in her, but God knew that she needed to come to Him and took her in His Hands.  Sharon's memorial service will be at Alki Masonic Center in West Seattle on Wednesday April 30 at 1:00 pm.
** Carol Ellis, WM, Crown Chapter

Sister Sharon and I were Chorus Line Deputy Instructors way back when!  She was such a delight and I know that she will be sorely missed by her Chapter and by all who knew her.  Let’s remember Brother Rolland in our thoughts and prayers.

Melanoma …

On April 25th, we lost a resident of Pend Oreille County … Amy Kiss, age 31 … a teacher at Selkirk Junior/Senior High School in Ione.  She spent the last five years of her life in Metaline Falls, Washington, where she said: “Five years in Metaline Falls is better than a lifetime anywhere else.” Amy, husband Ryan, and small daughter Mary found their lives changed forever in May of 2006, when Amy was diagnosed with stage three Melanoma. With the support of Ryan and many other family members and friends, Amy waged a fierce battle against this fast growing cancer.

Over the past four years Amy was passionate about four things: her love for Ryan and Mary, fishing, teaching her students, and educating others about the risk of sun exposure and the prevention of Melanoma. To learn more about the prevention of melanoma please visit www.melenoma.com.

Exchange student …

A Mason Brother of mine, from MENTON, French Riviera, close to French-Italian border, is willing to send his sweet daughter in an OES family in the United States on an exchange basis. Our brother is a French jewel store owner, and his daughter is planning to become a medical doctor, so she would like to spend her vacation IN THE UNITED STATES, visiting hospitals! I think handsome American boys will fast change her plans!

65 years of wedded bliss … in CO  …

"A wedding day, 65 years ago, two young loves joined as one. Both committed to forever, a journey had begun. They made a home together, filled it with love and care, opened their doors and hearts, welcomed friends and family there. The two became parents, and shared both joy and sorrow. Sacrificed and compromised their goal for a strong tomorrow. They watched their family grown, marked milestones along the way. Graduations, anniversaries, the commitment was there to stay. They welcomed a new generation, blessings beyond compare. The fruits of two loves, now the generations share. 65 years have unfolded, a celebration of marriage. A vow of love still cherished, holding hands as man and wife."
On May 9th, Jack (PGP) and his talented wife, Anita, will be celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. To celebrate and honor this very special couple and commemorate a milestone that few of us can ever hope to achieve, let's shower them with cards on this very special day. Cards may be sent to:

Greenwood Chapter news …

Following the installation of a complete corps of officers, and after honoring Junior Past Matron Dorothy Stephens and Junior Past Patron Jim Stephens at the first stated meeting in April, the members of Greenwood Chapter are surfing into the new year.

Worthy Matron Lea Riley and Worthy Patron Bill Shortt have planned a year full of fun and suprises.  With the theme "Life's a Beach,” and aloha shirts and muu muus the dress for the year, everyone is ready with flip flops and sea shells for a lot of "joy, love and laughter" (the watch words for this term).  This year is dedicated to our ritual, and a pop quiz on the ritual will be held at the May meeting.  Worthy Matron Lea promises "prizes."  The second meeting of the term is set for Tuesday, May 20th, at 7:30 pm at Greenwood Masonic Center in Seattle.  We'll open in short form and everyone is invited to join the officers in their Hawaiian attire.

The usual dinner will precede the meeting at 6:15 pm.  Please call Gladys Rudd for reservations, so she'll know how many mouths to cook for.

The Rexines social club will meet at it's usual time and place; 11:30am at the Kona Kitchen at 5h Ave. NE and NE 85th, on Thursday, May first.

Greenwood Past Matrons will meet at North Haven, at 11045 8th Ave. NE, on Wednesday, May 22nd.  The meeting starts at 11:00am with lunch to follow.

So true …

A one dollar bill met a twenty dollar bill and said, “Hey, where have you been? I haven’t seen you around here much.”

The twenty answered, “I’ve been hanging out at the casinos, went on a cruise and did the rounds of the ship, back to the United States for a while, went to a couple of baseball games, to the mall, that kind of stuff. How about you?”

The one dollar bill said, “You know, same old stuff… church, church, church.”

Marcia Beck’s Honor Night …

We had a wonderful time at Marcia Beck's Honor Night on Friday - we left on our 3 hour cruise - and then the genie (Chuck) appeared just in the nick of time so he didn't miss the cruise - and granted a wish to the Worthy Matron. WM Kathy Johnson's wish was that he escort Marcia to the east - and then there was some native entertainment (Amy doing & teaching the hula)....it was a great cruise...truly tropical weather in the chapter room (humid - even with the doors open)...

The refreshments were awesome and the dining room looked like we were at a luau...

As we were all leaving Alma slipped & fell.  I just spoke with her this morning and she has a couple of fractures in her upper arm. She has to see an ortho doctor yet and is on pain medication.  Luckily she didn't sprain an ankle or break a hip.

If you have time you might send her a card...she is so good to send all of us cards she hears we even have a sniffle...

IF ANY CHAPTERS HAVE EXCESS OFFICERS JEWELS OR EMBLEMS THEY WISH TO DONATE (ANYTHING I CAN FIT IN A SUITCASE) AND THEY WOULD BRING THEM TO GRAND CHAPTER (OR GIVE TO GRAND SECRETARY SANDY).  I WILL BE IN WA FROM 07 JUN TO APPROX END OF JULY.  THESE ITEMS ARE NEEDED FOR NEW CHAPTERS OPENING IN ITALY.

THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE, I REMAIN

FRATERNALLY YOURS

WITH STAR LOVE,

** BOB DeBRUYN, Deputy in Italy for MWGP

Do hope that your suitcase is light-weight!  Would you believe that I was ALMOST overweight upon our return trip home from Hawaii? At the hotel, it weighed 56#, so I quickly did some repacking of a few suitcases!  And when I went through check-in, I was alright.  WHEW!  We were ONLY allowed 50# (anything from 50-60 pounds would have cost us an additional $25!  Anything over 60 pounds would be turned away!)  Now I ask!  How can one do serious shopping in Hawaii and not be overweight?  I even purchased a new suitcase to bring home, too!
