MARCH – the Third Month!
IN MEMORIAM ...
JOYCE DOANE DAVIS, Past Grand Matron, 1967 - 1968
PGM Joyce Davis, a resident of Dallas, Oregon, passed away February 7, 2008. She was born on July 18, 1915 in Almira, Washington the daughter of Maurice and Tillie Evers Doane.
Joyce attended a one-room school in Govan, Washington and graduated from Almira High School and from Northwestern Business College in Spokane. In 1936 she married John F. Cadigan and they resided in Wallace, ID and Milton Freewater, OR. In 1943, they moved to Yakima. They were the parents of three sons, John, Shane and Ross Cadigan. Joyce worked in the family CPA business for a number of years and at Summitview School. Sister Joyce was also a member of Women's Century Club, Colonial Dames of SVII Century and St. Timothy's Episcopal Church.
PGM Joyce Davis was initiated into the Order of the Eastern Star on March 27, 1942 in Shoshone Chapter No. 10, Idaho. On June 11, 1945, she affiliated with Syringa Chapter, serving as a Worthy Matron in 1954-55. She also served as a Deputy Instructor in 1959-60 and as Grand Chaplain in 1963-64. Sister Joyce served the Grand Chapter of Washington as Worthy Grand Matron in 1967-68 with J. Wesley Harvey at her side as Worthy Grand Patron. In 1991 she became a dual member in Yakima Chapter. Yakima Chapter merged with Illihee Chapter and at her death, Sister Joyce was a member of Syringa Chapter and a Life Member of Illihee Chapter.
In 1970, she married Clayton H. Davis. She enjoyed travel and horseback riding and was an avid knitter contributing over 700 articles to the RSVP 'warm-up' project.
She was preceded in death by a brother, a sister, two step-sons and husbands, John Cadigan and Clayton Davis. She is survived by her sister, Carol Eckhart, a member of both Evening Star and Bethlehem Chapters; a brother, Bruce Doane of Tri-Cities; sons, John Cadigan (Marie) of Cashmere; Shane Cadigan, Kirkland; and Ross Cadigan (Nancy) of Dallas, along with eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Services were held February 14, 2008 at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Yakima.
In her Worthy Grand Matron Report at the 'Chapel Garden Session' on June 29, 1968, PGM Joyce has the following to say about her Official Visits:
What we have once enjoyed, we never lose. We keep the vision in our hearts and it becomes a part of us. The happiest part of the year was that spent in our 240 Subordinate Chapters at the Official Visits. The preparations which you made to welcome the one who represented the highest office in our Order in our Jurisdiction, and the love and respect accorded me, filled my heart with pride. The welcomes extended to me as I stood at the Altar upon which reposed the open Holy Bible in each Chapter room that I visited, was your most gracious gift of all - but for all the efforts which made each visit a uniquely lovely experience, I am humbly grateful. I want to express a special thanks to all our chapters for cooperating so wholeheartedly in preparing and presenting the histories of the Chapters. It added so much to our knowledge and appreciation of our heritage, and enriched the History of our Grand Chapter.
That all may share in this Tribute to her memory, we ask that this memorial be read at the first stated meeting after it's receipt, and the Altar draped in her memory.
Marjoe Richards, WGM Phil Green, WGP
Sandra K. Henry, Grand Secretary
God’s finger touched her and she slipped away
From earth’s dark shadows to a brighter day;
God saw the road was getting rough,
The hills were hard to climb;
He gently closed her weary eyes,
And whispered, ‘Peace be thine.’
To a beautiful garden this friend has gone,
To a land of perfect rest;
Though she is gone she still lives on;
Our memories are truly blessed.
PRAYERS NEEDED
In speaking with Nancy Breza of Pine Tree Chapter last Thursday evening, she informed me that Sister Kit Wells, Member of Registration Committee of GGC and PGM of Washington, apparently tripped over a phone cord at her home the night before and in the process, broke her hip. She was to have had surgery the next day (the 28th) to replace the ball in her hip (a partial hip replacement). The plans are that she will be in the hospital for 4-5 days, but cards can be sent to her home. I am sure that she would enjoy them as well as our prayers for a speedy recovery!

MESSAGES FROM MY MAILBOX...
Sadness in Oklahoma ...
I am sad to announce the passing of Jesse Burns, PGP of Oklahoma 1982-1983. Jane, his wife of 61 years and the rest of his family was by his side. Brother Jesse served with Sister Betty Fisher.
He
will be remembered lovingly by the membership of Oklahoma. Jesse was always
considered one of the "good guys" and loved everyone he ever
met.
Please keep Jane in your prayers.

Great news ...
(2/27) Just spoke with Peggy Weitman who informed me that our WM, VWB Clarence Weitman, is out of surgery. Peg stated that the surgery went well although it took longer that the doctor had first thought. The doctor felt VWB Clarence would be released from the hospital Thursday, barring any complications.

Analia Chapter's Invite to Installation ....
Connie, I sent this invitation after reading the Stars ofWashington newsletter. Kathy and I talked and realized that it is in fact Analia's 100th installation instead of it's 99th. Also, this is in larger print. We hope members will join us for this special evening. Actually, I am going to add to it. Please do not include this small print in with it. Thank You! Jean

Wonderful article ...
Hi Connie,
I
thought this might be an article of interest, published in the Verde Valley
News. The Masons here in

Local Freemasons plan ambitious project
By Steve Ayers, Staff Reporter
February 23, 2008
But if you were to ask a member, they will tell you it is utter nonsense. Their
role is no different than that of the Rotary Club or the Kiwanis.
"We are here to serve the community," local lodge leader Dave Lowry
said. "And we do that by making good people better,"
True to his word, Lowry and a group of Masons from the Valley are
doing something that is not happening all that often in the world of
Freemasonry. They are opening a new lodge.
But that is not the big news.
The big news is their plan for the new lodge.
Typically, Masonic lodges are meeting places, designed for the use
of their members.
But Lowery and friends have formed an organization called the Family
Pillars Foundation, and with it they plan to create a new model for what a
Masonic Lodge should be about.
They are currently negotiating on the purchase of 56 acres off State
Route 260 in
'With 56 acres we plan to do a lot more than build us a lodge,"
Lowry said. "We plan to build a cluster of multi-use facilities to help support
other community organizations."
The plan calls for a regional Red Cross service center, community
center, police and fire facilities, food bank, a performance arts theater and
auditorium, a major hotel and retreat center, and facilities for family and
substance abuse counseling and youth programs.
The list of prospective tenants includes everything from major
restaurants, to a medical clinic, to a regional chamber of commerce/regional
tourism center.
"We are being very ambitious here," Lowry said, "We want to be a
service to the community. We no longer wish to be seen as a secret society. We
are tired of that."
Lowry sees the project as a way for the Masons to "get out of the
shell they have been in for the last 30 years."
The foundation has already filed articles of incorporation for the
"Family Pillars Development Corporation," with the idea that the proceeds from
the development will be used to fund the foundation's community programs.
"It will be entirely non-profit with all of the money going back to
the community," Lowry said.
The officers of the new Family Pillars Lodge will be installed on
Sunday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at the Central Arizona Lodge,

Vacation anyone? Cool Sunsets, jumpin' gray whales, mighty redwoods?
BIG SUR, CA. The name Big Sur came from that unexplored wilderness area which lays along the coast south of Monterey, CA. It was simply called El Sur Grande, The Big South. Today, Big Sur refers to a 90 mile stretch of rugged and awesomely beautiful coastline between Carmel to the north and San Simeon (Hearst Castle) to the south. Highway One winds along its length and is flanked on one side by the majestic Santa Lucia Mountains and on the other by the rocky Pacific Coast. If you want the beaches or forests to yourself, February is the time to come to Big Sur. Bring your waders and fishing pole and explore the Big Sur River. The Steelhead season runs from November 16 to February 28 (guess you have to plan ahead for next year, huh!) Be sure to spend some time watching the Gray Whale migration. >From most any roadside turnout, you can see Gray Whales on their journey to the warm lagoons of Mexico. Camp amongst the mighty redwood trees along the Big Sur River. Big Sur Campground and Cabins has 81 sites with water, sewer and electricity; 36 are pull through sites.
