JUST FOR TODAY …
(From Dear Abby and shared by Ora Carlin …)
Rise and shine and welcome the New Year. This is our chance for a new beginning; the day we discard destructive old habits for healthy new ones.
· JUST FOR TODAY, I will live through this day only. I will not brood about yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals or try to overcome all my problems at once. I know that I can do something for 24 hours that would overwhelm me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime.
· JUST FOR TODAY, I will be happy, I will not dwell on thoughts that depress me. If my mind fills with clouds, I will chase them away then fill it with sunshine.
· JUST FOR TODAY, I will accept what is. I will face reality. I will correct those things I can correct and accept those I cannot.
· JUST FOR TODAY, I will improve my mind. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. I will not be a mental loafer.
· JUST FOR TODAY, I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable. I will be kind and courteous to those who cross my path, and I'll not speak ill of others. I'll improve my appearance, speak softly, and not interfere when someone else is talking. I'll refrain from improving anybody but myself.
· JUST FOR TODAY, I will do something to improve my health. If I am a smoker, Ill quit. If I'm overweight, I'll eat healthily------if only for today. And not only that, I'll get off the couch and take a brisk walk, even if it only around the block.
MESSAGE FROM OUR GRAND FAMILY
'We wish for you the season's joy
Wrapped up with ribbons and a bow,
A sprig of holly, mistletoe.
We wish for you the Christmas songs
That echo news throughout the earth,
Reminding of our Savior's birth.

To bring soul's inner glow to you,
Reflecting love the whole year through.' ... by Ruth Phillipy

Worthy Grand Patron Phil's History of OES
Quoting Brother Phil: Many of you know that I am a history buff, especially Masonic History. Many of us would like to speak 2 languages. Do you know that you all do? The first is the one we all have spoken most of our life. The second is a beautiful and simple form of communication, which is simply the language of symbolism.
Adah is the ideal daughter because by her deeds she demonstrated her sense of duty and fidelity to her father. The name Adah means ornament. Adah's color blue is symbolic of many things. For early Christians, it represented divine intelligence. To ancient people it symbolized truth, because the blue sky appears after the clouds are rolled away. This suggests the unveiling of truth. The emblem of the sword and veil portray revelation and right. When the veil is lifted from the eyes of a person, God or God's word is revealed. The sword represents the courage to follow the right course of action after the veil is lifted. The open Bible teaches that through the word of God each person is directed in the right way.
Ruth is the ideal widow. She prized the family of her husband above her own personal ambition, naive country and religion. The name Ruth means friend and Ruth's friendship with her mother-in-law Naomi is one of the worlds' great examples of true friendship. The color yellow represents constancy. The sheaf portrays the collective worth of many small deeds of kindness. So by the daily practice of consideration and kindness, we may reap a harvest of friendship and love.
Esther is the ideal wife. She was successful in fulfilling her duties to her husband and remained true to her duties to God and to her people. The color white is a symbol of light and has long been considered sacred. White was used in ancient times for initiation into the mysteries of religions and later by the Christian church such as Baptism and First Communion. Esther's name means star and she was indeed the star of hope for the Jewish people. The emblem of the crown and scepter united means royalty and power. Together they symbolize that the force of power and authority should be used to achieve justice for all persons. The sun is a symbol of light, power and strength. So Christ the son of righteousness brought God's enlightened leadership into the world and is the source of power and strength for His people.
Martha represents the ideal sister. The color green portrays the triumph of sp;ring over winter. Since green is a mixture of blue and yellow it includes all of the meanings of those colors as well as its own symbolism of charity and regeneration of the soul through faith and good works. The fern has been chosen as Martha's flower. It symbolism represents endless eternal life. The broken column reminds us that the uncertainties of life are made easier through faith and hope. The name Martha means fortitude, abiding and instructed by Christ and the sustaining power of faith and trust in a future life beyond the grave. The lamb is a symbol of meekness and sacrifice. As Lazarus died and was raised to life to prove the power of God to give eternal life through faith. So Christ the lamb of God was slain to prove that the power and love of God is eternal giving us both faith and hope if we believe.
Electa is the ideal mother. Tradition tells us she sacrificed much that her children might know the Christian faith. Red is the color of blood and is associated with the emotions of love and hate, because of this meaning, it very early became the symbol for martyred saints. It also had the meaning of fervency and hospitality and a symbol for the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. The red rose is the symbol of the goddess Venus. The followers of religion the rose is a symbol of secrecy and even today when some speak of something as sub Rose (under the rose) means what is being said is in the strictest of confidence. The cup has long been the symbol of charity and hospitality. In the Old Testament times, it was used to express joy, comfort and happiness as well as sorrow and the wrath of God. The lion is the symbol of strength and courage since early times. As Electa's love of Christ and her faith and trust in Him gave her the strength to be the trials of persecution. So Christ's love and faith and trust in God gave Him the strength and courage to bear His trails on the cross.
In our Chapters, the officers wear their emblem on a five colored ribbon. They symbolize the uniting of the Stars' rays and teaches us that by combining the attributes of fidelity, constancy, loyalty, faith and love, we can live a life dedicated to truth, charity and loving kindness.

Shooting in Butte, Montana ...
Shotgun preteen vs. illegal alien Home Invaders
Butte, Montana
November 5, 2006
Two illegal aliens, Ralphel Resindez, 23, and Enrico Garza, 26, probably
believed they would easily overpower home-alone 11 year old Patricia
Harrington after her father had left their two-story home.
It seems the two crooks never learned two things: they were in Montana and Patricia had been a clay shooting champion since she was nine.
Patricia was in her upstairs room when the two men broke through the
front door of the house. She quickly ran to her father's room and grabbed
his 12 gauge Mossberg 500 shotgun.
Resindez was the first to get up to the second floor only to be the
first to catch a near point blank blast of buckshot from the 11-year-olds
knee crouch aim. He suffered fatal wounds to his abdomen and genitals.
When Garza ran to the foot of the stairs, he took a blast to the left
shoulder and staggered out into the street where he bled to death before
medical help could arrive.
It was found out later that Resindez was armed with a stolen 45 caliber
handgun he took from another home invasion robbery. That victim, 50-year-old
David Burien, was not so lucky. He died from stab wounds to the chest.
Ever wonder why news like this never makes NBC, CBS, PBS, MSNBC, CNN, or
ABC news?

We hear the beating of wings over Bethlehem and a light that is not of
the sun or of the stars shines in the midnight sky. Let the beauty of the
story take away all narrowness, all thought of formal creeds. Let it be
remembered as a story that has happened again and again, to men of many
different races, that has been expressed through many religions, that has
been called by many different names. Time and space and language lay no
limitations upon human brotherhood.

I was out walking with my 4 year old daughter. She picked up something off the ground and started to put it in her mouth. I took the item away from her and I asked her not to do that.
'Why?' my daughter asked. 'Because it's been on the ground, you don't know where it's been, it's dirty, and probably has germs' I replied. At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration and asked, 'Momma, how do you know all this stuff, you are so smart.'
I was thinking quickly. 'All moms know this stuff. It's on the Mom Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mom.'
We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but she was evidently pondering this new information. 'OH...I get it!' she beamed, 'So if you don't pass the test you have to be the dad.'
''Exactly' I
replied back with a big smile on my face.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets ... reviews!
If you all get a chance this holiday weekend to see any movies, go and
see National Treasure: Book of Secrets. It is great. Our DeMolay Chapter was
invited to a sneak preview tonight (Wednesday) to see it before it's release
and we were all pleased with what we saw. The movie is not like the first
one in the sense it is not exclusively about the Masons or Templers. It does
have a connection (minor) but it is still fantastic. I will not give away
the plot so be surprised and delighted. Nicholas Cage is fantastic as usual.

Brethren all,
Here is the "hot off the press" review of National Treasure- Book of Secrets. Dick Fletcher and I were invited to the World Premier in New York and were able to see the movie early. I hope you find the following information useful. You may wish to share this report with your Personal Reps and Valley staff.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Nicolas Cage unearthed the No. 1 spot at the North American box office on Sunday with "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," which earned more than the combined totals of four other high-powered newcomers.
The action sequel sold $45.5 million worth of tickets during its first three days, distributor Walt Disney Pictures said. Last weekend's champion, the Will Smith sci-fi thriller "I Am Legend," slipped to No. 2 with $34.2 million, taking the 10-day haul for the Warner Bros. release to $137.5 million.
CAGE VS. CRITICS
The $45.5 million start for "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" compares with a $35 million launch for 2004's "National Treasure," which went on to make $173 million, the biggest film of Cage's career. It also earned $173 million overseas. Cage spent two weeks at No. 1 in February with "Ghost Rider," which started with $45 million on its way to $116 million domestically.
In the new film, he flies around the world trying to solve an ancient puzzle related to Lincoln's assassination, in the process managing to break into both Buckingham Palace and the White House. Critics were appalled.
The film also earned $22.3 million from 17 overseas markets, led by No. 1 bows in Japan ($3.6 million) and South Korea ($3.5 million). Disney is waiting until early February to release the film across most of Europe, because it has its hands full with the hit fairy tale romance "Enchanted," which has earned $77.7 million to date overseas.
NATIONAL TREASURE – BOOK OF SECRETS
By Dick Fletcher- Masonic Service Association
The new National Treasure movie titled National Treasure – Book of Secrets is scheduled to be released in theatres December 21, 2007. Having had an opportunity for a preliminary screening the following comments are based on that viewing.
There are very few references to Freemasonry. The movie never approaches the Masonic theme so evident in the first National Treasure. The few references to Masons or Masonry would not attract a reaction from the audience. The theme of the movie is, again, the discovery of a vast treasure, although this time there is no Masonic connection.
The scenes in Washington DC are primarily centered around the Library of Congress and the White House, with an additional scene at Mount Vernon in Virginia. Paris and New York City are also featured. There are some references made where background information might be helpful to our readers and so we hope the following information will prove useful to you.
In the beginning of the movie reference is made to an organization known as the KGC. One of the characters has a pin prominently displaying the letters KGC .
The Knights of the Golden Circle (KGC) was one of a multitude of political/fraternal organizations formed during the American Civil War period. According to Mark A. Lause, Department of History, University of Cincinnati, the KGC were pro-Confederate sympathizers. They were also rumored to have amassed a “vast treasure” to fund future war plans. Roy Sylvan Dunn writing in a 1967 edition of the Southwestern Historical Quarterly notes that the KGC’s activities diminished when the Civil War ended.
In a conversation concerning the Statue of Liberty “Laboulaye” is mentioned as the person who conceived the idea of the statue.
Edouard Rene de Laboulaye was a French jurist. He is considered as one who watched carefully the development of the United States and was an admirer of its Constitution. He is considered by some as having formulated the idea of presenting a statue representing liberty as a gift to the United States, a symbol for ideas suppressed by Napoleon III. Of course, the sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi is the one who created the Statue of Liberty and helped present it to the United States at the location where it now stands on Liberty Island in New York harbor. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was also a Freemason and a member of Lodge Alsace – Lorraine in Paris.
References are made to Albert Pike as a Confederate General but with no mention of his Masonic membership.
Albert Pike was indeed a Confederate General who fought at the Battle of Pea Ridge in Arkansas. He was also an ardent Freemason and is remembered as having been the guiding force behind the development of the Scottish Rite into a major Masonic organization.
The concluding scenes of the movie take place at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.
The movie makes no reference to the sculptor but both Gutzon Borglum, who was the sculptor of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and his son Lincoln Borglum were Freemasons. Following the death of his father, Lincoln Borglum was assigned the task of completing the Mount Rushmore Memorial.
Gutzon Borglum was raised in Howard Lodge #35 in New York City and served as its Master in 1910-1911. Lincoln Borglum was raised in Battle River Lodge #92 Hermosa, South Dakota.
National Treasure – Book of Secrets is a fast paced thriller as was the first National Treasure movie.
CONSPIRACY THEORIES:
Popular culture enjoys stories based on conspiracy theories of which there are many. One such fictionalization insists that there is a relationship between a Mason’s Degree status and the information known about a conspiracy theory. In fact, there is no evidence to support Freemasonry’s involvement with any conspiracy—with or without regard to its Degrees. Masonic Degrees are concerned primarily with communicating the importance of honor and integrity, teaching that each person must take responsibility for his own life and actions.

How does Santa stay healthy during the holidays …
Let's face facts. Santa is obese, elderly and has some decidedly serious
occupational hazards (such as climbing down chimneys in the winter, lifting
heavy bags of toys and flying across the sky in a sleigh). On Christmas Eve he
eats thousands of cookies left for him by children from all over the globe and
he washes them down with several thousand glasses of milk. And when does the
man sleep? Despite it all, he appears to be in remarkably good health.
Most of us, however, are not like Santa. He does, after all, have some
Christmas spirit and magic working to his advantage. For most of us mere
mortals, obesity, getting older, sleep deprivation and risky hobbies can pose
significant health risks. Obesity, in particular, has reached dangerous
epidemic proportions in our country. According to the Centers for Disease
Control, more than 58 million people in this country are overweight, 40
million are obese and three million are "morbidly obese." The prevalence of
childhood obesity in the United States has risen dramatically in the past two
decades. Although 25 to 30 percent of children are overweight, the condition
is under diagnosed and under treated.
Because obese children may suffer life-long physical and emotional
consequences, it is essential that parents, teachers and physicians take steps
to help children overcome this problem. Plans should include reasonable weight
loss goals, more physical activity, behavior modification and family
involvement. Get your children involved by letting them help you plan and
prepare healthy meals.
Here are some traps to avoid during the holidays and throughout the year:

Benefits of living in a Masonic Retirement Center ...
This is an
exciting time of year and a new adventure for Robert and I. On 29th August
we moved to Texas Masonic Retirement Center in Arlington.
After "downsizing" and "downsizing" some more we made it! This facility is
located on 100 acres within the city limits of Arlington which is between
Dallas and Ft. Worth. Approximately 160 residents enjoy the security and no
worry living without yard work, cooking, cleaning and etc. Many of which are
like Robert and I who call home the independent living concept.
We can lock our apartment, leave for hours, days ot weeks knowing that
our home will be safe and secure for our return. Many activities keep us
busy, as well as having the opportunity to visit many Chapters and Lodges in
the area. An added bonus is we're near DFW.
So this Christmas (as we did on Thanksgiving) will be spent with our
extended Masonic and Eastern Star families.
To each of you
and your families we wish you a MERRY CHRISTMAS and BLESSED NEW YEAR!

Bible Quotes in the Ritual -
Recently, Martha Hendrickson, Montana Stars, published the following Bible quotes that are in our Ritual. I wrote to her and asked if I could share with you readers and she gave me her blessing. I do hope that you enjoy these as much as I do. And I thank Sister Martha for all her hard work!

5. Adah's Lecture, initiation, pages 60-61.
"Jephthah vowed a vow unto the Lord and said, 'If Thou shalt deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace shall surely be the Lord's and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.'" Judges 11:30-31
"....and, "behold! his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances, and she was his only child." Judges 11:34

7. Ruth's Lecture, initiation, pages 64-65.

"And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said unto his reapers, the Lord be with you. And they answered him, The Lord bless thee."
"Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, Whose damsel is this?"
"And the servant, that was set over the reapers, answered and said, It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab." Ruth 2:4-6
9. Esther's Lecture, initiation, page 69.
One sentence in Esther's initiation lecture on page 69 is a direct contradiction of the Bible and the Biblical quote in fine print in the Ritual on page 70. Before I realized this conflict, I served as Esther several times and also as Grand Esther. Until GGC corrects the error in the lecture, I will not serve as Esther or give the initiation lecture.
"The king's countenance flushed with anger when he beheld her intrusion. (Webster defines "countenance" as facial expression.)
"What wilt thou, Queen Esther, and what is thy request? It shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom." Esther 5:3
10. WP or AP recite scripture, initiation. Fine print, page 70.
"And it was so, when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, that she obtained favor in his sight; and the king held out to Esther the golden scepter that was in his hand. So Esther drew near, and touched the top of the scepter."
"Then said the king unto her, What wilt thou, Queen Esther? and what is thy request? it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom." Esther 5:2-3
11. Martha's Lecture, initiation, pages 71-72.
"....Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. But I know that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee."
"Jesus saith unto her, thy brother shall rise again."
"Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day."
"Jesus saith unto her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?" John 11:21-26
12. WP or AP recite scripture, initiation. Fine print, page 73.

"But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee."
"Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again."
"Martha saith unto Him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day." "Jesus saith unto her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die." John 11:21-26

Boxing Day ... December 26th ...
I heard last night on the news that Boxing Day started in England. If people had to work on Christmas Day, cooking meals, etc., their bosses or whoever would bring them boxes of goodies. I think that it is how it started. Canada being part of the British Commonwealth celebrate it, but I did not know that the States did not celebrate it.
