Definition of a Veteran
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, National Guard or Reserve ... is someone who, at one point in his life,
wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."
That is Honor and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it!

More prayers needed ...Sister Nancy Jo Tutino,PGM...
Hi, Connie,
Some bad news! Would you mind passing this along to the membership? I knew
that you two would want to know, too.
I stopped in to see Nancy Jo and Louie on my way home from Yakima
yesterday. Nancy Jo had just gotten home from the dr. in Seattle and a
biopsy on a gland in her neck. The diagnosis is that she has adenocarcinoma
(cancer) which is probably also in her lungs. She will have more tests next
Tuesday to determine the exact source of the cancer. The dr will then decide
on treatment. Prayers and cards are definitely in order.

Yucca Valley ... I received this message from Nancy last night. Nancy is a
member of Desert Valley Chapter #602 in Yucca Valley, CA. Just a note to
tell you
that my daughter's home in Grassvalley (Lake Arrowhead) burned to the ground
today. It is a sad day for all of us, but thankful that she was with her
husband and son in San Jose at this time. A friend rescued their Chinchilla
and Taylor's Leopard Gecko and got several albums and a few other pictures
along with her two photography cameras. This person also had time to go
throughout the house and took pictures of everything in the house. Smart
thinking. But does not ease the shock of their losses. Keep them in your
prayers.

Our outgoing WGM, Sis. Marsha Porter, present three Grand Representative
commission as one of her last official duties.
Sis. Kay Parrish - Georgia
Sis. Diane Stevens - Pennsylvania
Sis. Melva Dukes - Washington
Sis. Kay is already planning to take a whole crew of KY Eastern Star to
the Grand Chapter of Georgia, so Georgia had better get ready. :- ) Some of
you may have already met her when she was Grand Marshall a few years back.
These three ladies are very hard working Eastern Star members who are
very deserving of their commissions.
Sis. Melva just recently finished her first term as WM for Queen Esther
Chapter #1. She is daughter of PGP Mel Dukes and PGM Ann Payne Dukes.
They are all looking forward to traveling to the respective Grand
Chapters.
** David White, Secretary, Middletown Chapter #319, Middletown, KY GGC
Something to ponder …
Finally, today, I met a very nice young lady at the ID office, here in
Schweinfurt. She was wearing an Eastern Star emblem around her neck and I
asked her if she was a member. She said that she had just joined the chapter
in Wurzburg, here in Germany. As there was a picture of her husband on her
desk, I asked her if her husband was downrange (Iraq) and she said that he
was. I asked her if her husband was a Mason and she said no. Then I asked
her about her Masonic
affiliation, and she said that she had no Masons in her family and had
received an exception to policy as she is located in Germany and does not
need Masonic affiliation. Now her chapter is Prince Hall affliliated, but I
thought we still had to have Masonic affiliation to join our organization.
Can someone clue me in here? Am I so out of the loop that I am missing some
new ruling that has come down? Or am I opening a can of worms? Just curious.
And we can always use a controversial subject to discuss on this site!

A Norwegian was terribly overweight, so his doctor put him on a diet.
'I want you to eat regularly for 2 days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for 2 weeks. The next time I see you, you should have lost at least 5 pounds.
When the Norwegian returned, he shocked the Doctor by having lost nearly 25 POUNDS! 'Why, that's amazing!' the Doctor said, did you follow my instructions?'
The Norwegian nodded and said...'I'll tell you though, I taut I was gonna drop dead dat 3rd day.'
'From hunger, you mean?
'No, yust from all dat skippin'!'

EAT HEALTHY THIS FALL WITH THESE FRUIT CHOICES ...
Thin that the end of summer signals the end of healthy eating? For many, the warmer seasons bring a plethora of fruits and vegetables that make eating healthy easy to do. Saying good bye to corn on the cob, fresh zucchini, peaches, and blueberries doesn't mean saying hello to dried fruits, and canned veggies and packaged preservatives. Here are some great fresh produce choices that can help you make an appetizing transition to the cooler months:
Grapes are available year round and are full of antioxidants.
Pumpkin is loaded with beta-carotene as well as Vitamin A and potassium, fiber and iron.
Apples are full of antioxidants and Vitamin C.

Halloween Pumpkin Bars
From Taste of Home's Simple & Delicious
“My family loves the warm pumpkin fragrance that wafts through our
kitchen on cool, fall afternoons when I make these bars,” writes Karla
Johnson from E. Helena, Montana. Jack-o-lantern faces only add to the
festive, fall flavor!
1-1/2 cups pumpkin pie filling
2 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped pecans
1 can (16 ounces) cream cheese frosting
Yellow and red food coloring
70 pieces candy corn
1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
DIRECTIONS: In a large mixing bowl, beat the pumpkin, sugar, oil, eggs and
vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; gradually
add to pumpkin mixture and mix well. Stir in pecans. Pour into a greased
15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan. Bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes or until
a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
Tint frosting orange with yellow and red food coloring; frost bars; cut into 35 squares. For eyes, place two pieces of candy corn on each bar. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate chips; stir until smooth. Transfer to a heavy-duty re-sealable plastic bag; cut a small hole in a corner of the bag. Pipe dots on candy corn for pupils; decorate faces as desired. Yield: 35 bars.

Trick-or-Treat Turnovers
< From Taste of Home
How cute! Marge Free of Brandon, Mississippi carved these clever pumpkin
pastries to feed her hungry bunch at Halloween. The ground beef filling has
a hint of onion and mustard.
1/2 pound ground beef
1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
4 ounces mozzarella cheese, cubed
1/4 cup prepared mustard
2 tubes (16.3 ounces each) large refrigerated flaky biscuits
1 egg, lightly beaten
DIRECTIONS: In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until
meat is no longer pink; drain. Add cheese and mustard; cook and stir until
cheese is melted. Cool slightly. Flatten each biscuit into a 4-in. circle;
place four biscuits in each of two greased 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking
pans. Spoon 2 heaping tablespoons of meat mixture onto each. Using a sharp
knife or cookie cutters, cut out jack-o'-lantern faces from remaining
biscuit circles; place over meat mixture and pinch edges to seal tightly.
Re-roll scraps if desired and cut out stems for pumpkins. Brush with egg.
Bake at 350° for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Yield: 8 servings.

Sweet Jack-o'-Lanterns
>From Country Woman
There's no trick to making these Halloween-flavored cupcakes. By using a
convenient cake mix, you can turn them out in a jiffy. Simplify them even
more with canned frosting.
1 package (18-1/4 ounces) yellow cake mix or cake mix of your choice
3-3/4 cups confectioners' sugar
3 tablespoons butter, softened
2/3 to 3/4 cup milk
1 to 1-1/2 teaspoons orange paste food coloring
4 green gumdrops
12 black jujubes (what in the world are jujubes???)
DIRECTIONS: Prepare and bake cake according to package directions for cupcakes. Fill 24 greased muffin cups two-thirds full. Bake at 350° for 15-18 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely. For frosting, in a small bowl, combine confectioners' sugar, butter and enough milk to achieve spreading consistency. Stir in food coloring. Cut a thin slice off the top of each cupcake. Spread frosting on 12 cupcakes. Invert remaining cupcakes and place on top; frost top and sides. For stems, cut each gumdrop into three lengthwise wedges; place one piece on top of each cupcake. Cut jujubes into thin slices; use a bottom slice for each mouth. From remaining slices, cut one large triangle and two smaller ones. Position two small triangles and a large triangle on each cupcake for eyes and nose. Yield: 1 dozen.
