    Please let those that know PWGM Sylvia Palmer that her husband of 60 plus years died at home Friday October 19th 2007.  The Masonic Memorial
will be held at Bainbridge Island Masonic temple were Rod was a member of Renton Lodge. Day and time will come latter. Both are members of Poulsbo OES and he was my Worth Patron in 02-03.  He will be greatly missed.

    His memorial will be held Sat Nov 3, 2007 at 2 PM at Renton Lodge Bainbridge Island.

Prayers needed ... Brother Sam Alford, PGP . . .
     For those of you that don't know Sam Alford PGP had a major stroke this week. His family found him on the bathroom floor at his home in Everett. They are not sure when it happened and neither does Sam.
    He has limited motor control of his left side. There is still difficulty in speaking and articulating his words. But as Sharon says that is mostly since he can't wear his dentures yet.
    I stopped in to see him today (Sunday) and they were trying to get him to sit in a chair. His balance is still off so that didn't work to well. But he is taking fluids by mouth now. So he was served his first real meal (if you can call it that). The nurse was going to help him with that.
    While I was there Sheryl and Jim Acord stopped by. Sheryl got him to drink his juice from a cup. When we were leaving Ann and Bob Gates where looking for him. So he is getting lots of company. Which I don't know if that is good or bad. But he knows that we all LOVE him.
    He still is the same old Sam.  Full of mischief and loving the care from the nursing staff. You can send cards to his home at 815 124th SW. #138 Everett, WA 98204-5674 and Sharon will get them to him. Or if you want to visit, he is in room 426 - Providence Hospital Colby Campus.

    Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

More prayers needed ...Sister Nancy Jo Tutino,PGM...

 Hi, Connie,

     Some bad news! Would you mind passing this along to the membership? I knew that you two would want to know, too.
     I stopped in to see Nancy Jo and Louie on my way home from Yakima yesterday. Nancy Jo had just gotten home from the dr. in Seattle and a biopsy on a gland in her neck. The diagnosis is that she has adenocarcinoma (cancer) which is probably also in her lungs. She will have more tests next Tuesday to determine the exact source of the cancer. The dr will then decide on treatment.  Prayers and cards are definitely in order.

Southern California fires ...
Newhall ... Just an update for those of you familiar with our Newhall, CA location. Several Old West Chapter members and their families have been evacuated from a variety of locations around the Santa Clarita area. Our AM left her house this morning and is worried about her WM dress!!
    Despite those difficulties, we have no reports of anyone injured or homes damaged for our members. We are thankful for that.
    We will continue to keep a watchful eye on this and try to keep up with our various members to be sure their needs are met. I'm sure they would appreciate your prayers, as would all who are affected by these fires.

Yucca Valley ... I received this message from Nancy last night. Nancy is a member of Desert Valley Chapter #602 in Yucca Valley, CA. Just a note to tell you
that my daughter's home in Grassvalley (Lake Arrowhead) burned to the ground today. It is a sad day for all of us, but thankful that she was with her husband and son in San Jose at this time. A friend rescued their Chinchilla and Taylor's Leopard Gecko and got several albums and a few other pictures along with her two photography cameras. This person also had time to go throughout the house and took pictures of everything in the house. Smart thinking. But does not ease the shock of their losses. Keep them in your prayers.

    Our outgoing WGM, Sis. Marsha Porter, present three Grand Representative commission as one of her last official duties.

    Sis. Kay is already planning to take a whole crew of KY Eastern Star to the Grand Chapter of Georgia, so Georgia had better get ready. :- ) Some of you may have already met her when she was Grand Marshall a few years back.

    These three ladies are very hard working Eastern Star members who are very deserving of their commissions.
    Sis. Melva just recently finished her first term as WM for Queen Esther Chapter #1. She is daughter of PGP Mel Dukes and PGM Ann Payne Dukes.
    They are all looking forward to traveling to the respective Grand Chapters.

Something to ponder … 

            Finally, today, I met a very nice young lady at the ID office, here in Schweinfurt. She was wearing an Eastern Star emblem around her neck and I asked her if she was a member. She said that she had just joined the chapter in Wurzburg, here in Germany. As there was a picture of her husband on her desk, I asked her if her husband was downrange (Iraq) and she said that he was. I asked her if her husband was a Mason and she said no. Then I asked her about her Masonic
affiliation, and she said that she had no Masons in her family and had received an exception to policy as she is located in Germany and does not need Masonic affiliation. Now her chapter is Prince Hall affliliated, but I thought we still had to have Masonic affiliation to join our organization. Can someone clue me in here? Am I so out of the loop that I am missing some new ruling that has come down? Or am I opening a can of worms? Just curious. And we can always use a controversial subject to discuss on this site!

Greenwood Chapter news …

            Wow!  Here it is November already!  Greenwood Chapter members are ready for the November meeting on Tuesday, November 20th, at Greenwood Masonic Center.  Worthy Matron Dorothy Stephens and Worthy Patron Jim Stephens have scheduled short form opening, and November birthdays and anniversaries will be celebrated, along with Thanksgiving.  The usual pre-meeting dinner is set for 6 pm at $5.00 per plate.  Please call Gladys Rudd, at 206 440 1767, for reservations so she can plan on how many dinners to prepare.
            Rexines will meet at 11:30 am on Thursday, November 1st, at Kona Kitchen at 5th Avenue Northeast and 185th.  Fun, fellowship and lively conversation always accompany the lunch.
            Chapter members will be serving dinner to a Masonic Group and their ladies at Greenwood Masonic Center on November 11th.   Please contact the Worthy Matron if you are available to help serve.
            The Past Matrons Club will meet on Wednesday, November 28th at 11:30 am at North Haven, at 11045 8th Ave. N. E. in Seattle.

    Today, President Bush declared a state of emergency for California.  He has dispatched Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff and FEMA Director David Paulison to the affected areas and to provide support and assess the needs so they can be met.  Eight hundred Marines from Camp Pendleton, CA have volunteered to fight the fires at the front lines—Marines who have recently returned from Iraq.  This is currently the largest evacuation in our nation since Hurricane Katrina in August 2005.  Though progress has been made in fighting the fires in some areas, many are still raging out of control.

OPERATION HOMEFRONT

Dear Members:
    Operation Homefront's mission statement is 'Operation Homefront provides emergency support and moral to our troops, the families they leave behind during deployment, and wounded warriors when they return'.
    Their web site www.operationhomefront.net/washington provides great opportunities for us to help as individuals.  Janice Buckley is the president of the Washington State Chapter and can be reached at 1-800-779-5898 or P. O. Box 704, Snohomish, WA 98201.  All donations stay in the state of Washington.
    Janice tells me they are starting something new ... 'Wounded Warriors Wives Club'.  Many of these wives are young with young children and don't know where to turn for moral support.  Operation Homefront feels this is a place where they can lend a helping hand in addition to their other programs.  They are looking for gift cards for hair salons, manicures, movie tickets, or groceries.
    We are asking each Chapter to appoint a chairperson and have a fund raiser to benefit Operation Homefront.  Let's show them how much we care!

DELIVERY OF QUILTS ...

    We traveled to Warsaw, Poland in July, 2006.  Diane McQuery (wife of then Grand Master Chuck) arranged for us to take 10 beautiful quilts from an organization called 'Wrap Them In Love' to an orphanage of our choosing in Warsaw. 
    We went to the Janusz Korczak Orphanage for Jewish children to donate the quilts.  The orphanage has been rebuilt since World War II.
    Janusz Korczak was a doctor, writer, and educator who devoted his life to children.  He was the director of a Jewish orphanage in Warsaw which was moved by the Nazis into the Ghetto in 1940.  In August 1942, he was notified that the children would be going to a death camp the next day, but he would not have to go.  Janusz chose to go with his children to the very end.  They all perished at Treblinka.
    It was a very moving experience to see and hear the stories of the Polish people and an honor to deliver the quilts.
 
NOTE:   I was so moved by the story that Karen related of the history of this orphanage when they returned home from Poland.  I just had to have her write it all down for you all to read.  Thank you, Karen and John.  The quilts, by the way, were well received and after their delivery, the Lunt's suitcases were mighty empty!  We just don't realize how fortunate we are that we are living free!  And when I hear someone doubt the Holocaust, I remember such stories as these ... from those who has traveled and seen the death camps, the incinerators ... God Bless our military who continue to serve and sometimes even give of their lives so that we can remain in freedom! 
 

 
 

Misinterpreting... 

 

  • When my twin daughters were young, I taught them to say this prayer before going to bed. As I listened outside their door, I could hear them say, "Give us this steak and daily bread, and forgive us our mattresses." My husband and I always had a good laugh over this. That was over 50 years ago, and the memory still remains in my heart.
  • Groton, MA.:  My mother spent her early childhood saying, "Hail Mary, full of grapes."  
  • Missoula, MT:  My son, who is in nursery school, said, "Our Father, who art in Heaven, how did ja know my name?"
  • Uniontown, OH:  I remember thinking this prayer was "Give us this day our jelly bread."  
  • Covina, CA:  I recall reading something years ago about the Pledge of Allegiance. Some child thought it began, "I led the pigeons to the flag." 
  • Cleveland, OH:  When I was little, I often wondered who Richard Stands was. You know: "I pledge allegiance to the flag . . . And to the republic for Richard Stands."  
  • Tampa, FL:  When my husband was 6 years old, he thought a certain Prayer was "He suffered under a bunch of violets." The real words were "under Pontius Pilate," but at that age, he didn't know better. To this day, we still snicker in church whenever that prayer is read. 
  • Oak Harbor, WA:  When my older brother was very young, he always walked up to the church altar with my mother when she took communion. On one occasion, he tugged at her arm and asked, "What does the priest say when he gives you the bread?" Mom whispered something in his ear. Imagine his shock many years later when he learned that the priest doesn't say, "Be quiet until you get to your seat."   
  • Grand Junction, CO:  When I was younger, I believed the line was "Lead a snot into temptation." I thought I was praying for my little sister to get into trouble.

LOWRY'S HINTS
  • Suggestions On Mice Problem ...HINT #1: Soak cotton balls with a mixture of bleach and WD-40, leave them in cupboards; or just spray your baseboards with the WD-40, it repels all kinds of pests without poisoning you, your kids or pets. Outdoors as well, spray around your window sills and door jambs; the red straw attached to the nozzle gets the juice right where you want it.
  • HINT #2:  Put moth balls between the outside and inside walls. About four to five moth balls between every other stud section does the trick. The camphor in the moth balls drives them away. They would also breathe in the aroma from the moth balls and it would go to their brain, giving them paralysis and ultimate death, or they might try eating them and being poisoned and they would pass it on to their off spring.
  • HINT #3: Another thing I have read about to get rid of rats and mice is sugar bread. You take just a small piece roll it in sugar and put it in your trap. They come after that almost instantly. It worked great for me.
  • HINT #4: If you put bacon in the mouse trap, secure it well then spread bacon grease all around the trap and the mouse will slip and slide while pulling on the bacon.
  • HINT #5: One of their favourite foods is pumpkin seeds. These are ideal to set a trap with as the mice still like them even when they're dry, and they
    don't attract ants.
  • HINT #6: Save money. Join a warehouse club with a friend or neighbor. If you divide the cost and purchase items in bulk, you can save quite a bit.
  • HINT #7: Stain Remover That Isn't Costly.... You learn something new every day . . . while reading an article by Mary Hunt, I discovered a new stain
    remover: hand sanitizer. According to the article, you can apply a bit of hand sanitizer to the stain (in this case it was coffee), and it will remove the stain on the spot. Pretty nifty if it works; and with my grandkids, I'm sure it won't be long until I get to try it.
NOTE:  On mice removable ... Get a cat!  Easy to feed, easy to love, and can stay alone without any problem!  Of course, our Sissy wouldn't know a mouse if she met it in the street!   Ted did bring to our door, a gopher that he caught and let her smell it!  She looked surprised, amazed, and consequently, uninterested!  Thank goodness!  All I need is a cat with a prize!

Halloween Pumpkin Bars

From Taste of Home's Simple & Delicious
“My family loves the warm pumpkin fragrance that wafts through our kitchen on cool, fall afternoons when I make these bars,” writes Karla Johnson from E. Helena, Montana. Jack-o-lantern faces only add to the festive, fall flavor!

1-1/2 cups pumpkin pie filling
2 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped pecans
1 can (16 ounces) cream cheese frosting
Yellow and red food coloring
70 pieces candy corn
1/2 cup milk chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS:  In a large mixing bowl, beat the pumpkin, sugar, oil, eggs and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; gradually add to pumpkin mixture and mix well. Stir in pecans.  Pour into a greased 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan. Bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.

            Tint frosting orange with yellow and red food coloring; frost bars; cut into 35 squares. For eyes, place two pieces of candy corn on each bar.  In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate chips; stir until smooth. Transfer to a heavy-duty re-sealable plastic bag; cut a small hole in a corner of the bag. Pipe dots on candy corn for pupils; decorate faces as desired.   Yield: 35 bars.

Walnut Caramel Treats
>From Country Woman Christmas
Better than visions of sugarplums, these triple-decker treats feature creamy caramel and nuts sandwiched between milk chocolate layers - a candy lover's dream come true!

2 teaspoons plus 1/3 cup butter, divided
2 packages (11-1/2 ounces each) milk chocolate chips, divided
4 tablespoons shortening, divided
2 packages (14 ounces each) caramels
1/4 cup water
3 cups chopped walnuts

DIRECTIONS:  Line an ungreased 9-in. square pan with foil and grease the foil with 2 teaspoons butter; set aside. In a microwave or heavy saucepan, melt one package of chips and 2 tablespoons shortening; stir until smooth. Pour into a prepared pan. Refrigerate for 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a large heavy saucepan over medium-low heat, combine the caramels, water and remaining butter. Cook and stir until caramels are melted and mixture is smooth. Stir in walnuts. Pour over chocolate layer. Refrigerate for 45 minutes.  In a microwave or heavy saucepan, melt remaining chips and shortening. Spread over caramel layer. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until firm.  Using foil, lift candy out of pan. Discard foil; cut candy into squares; store in the refrigerator. Yield: 4 pounds.  (Serves 28)
NUTRITIONAL INFO:  Nutrition Facts: 1 serving (1-1/2 each) equals 232 calories, 16 g fat (6 g saturated fat), 10 mg cholesterol, 69 mg sodium, 19 g carbohydrate, 1 g fiber, 5 g protein.

Trick-or-Treat Turnovers

How cute! Marge Free of Brandon, Mississippi carved these clever pumpkin pastries to feed her hungry bunch at Halloween. The ground beef filling has a hint of onion and mustard.

1/2 pound ground beef
1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
4 ounces mozzarella cheese, cubed
1/4 cup prepared mustard
2 tubes (16.3 ounces each) large refrigerated flaky biscuits
1 egg, lightly beaten

DIRECTIONS:  In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Add cheese and mustard; cook and stir until cheese is melted. Cool slightly.   Flatten each biscuit into a 4-in. circle; place four biscuits in each of two greased 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pans. Spoon 2 heaping tablespoons of meat mixture onto each.   Using a sharp knife or cookie cutters, cut out jack-o'-lantern faces from remaining biscuit circles; place over meat mixture and pinch edges to seal tightly. Re-roll scraps if desired and cut out stems for pumpkins.  Brush with egg. Bake at 350° for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Yield: 8 servings.

Sweet Jack-o'-Lanterns
>From Country Woman
There's no trick to making these Halloween-flavored cupcakes. By using a convenient cake mix, you can turn them out in a jiffy. Simplify them even more with canned frosting.


1 package (18-1/4 ounces) yellow cake mix or cake mix of your choice
3-3/4 cups confectioners' sugar
3 tablespoons butter, softened
2/3 to 3/4 cup milk
1 to 1-1/2 teaspoons orange paste food coloring
4 green gumdrops
12 black jujubes  (what in the world are jujubes???)

 

DIRECTIONS:  Prepare and bake cake according to package directions for cupcakes. Fill 24 greased muffin cups two-thirds full. Bake at 350° for 15-18 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely.   For frosting, in a small bowl, combine confectioners' sugar, butter and enough milk to achieve spreading consistency. Stir in food coloring. Cut a thin slice off the top of each cupcake. Spread frosting on 12 cupcakes. Invert remaining cupcakes and place on top; frost top and sides.   For stems, cut each gumdrop into three lengthwise wedges; place one piece on top of each cupcake. Cut jujubes into thin slices; use a bottom slice for each mouth.   From remaining slices, cut one large triangle and two smaller ones. Position two small triangles and a large triangle on each cupcake for eyes and nose. Yield: 1 dozen.
