I WISH YOU ENOUGH
(This is 'borrowed' from my email friend, Dianna Gillard.  She always signed her emails with ... I wish you enough ... and then her name.
This is what it means!)

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.
I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.

MESSAGE FROM OUR WORTHY GRAND MATRON

HOT TIME IN THE COULEE UPDATE!
We are very sorry to announce that there will NOT be the craft class at the Masonic Hall Friday afternoon.  Sister Betty Schenewerk can use our prayers right now as she is dealing with a possible ruptured disk in her neck.  There will still be the luncheon from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM and, of course, the golf tournament.  We have had some last minute requests for info.  Anyone still interested in playing should contact Bill Hammontree at 253-922-1288 as soon as possible.

CLARIFICATION OF SATURDAY MORNING MEETING:
The 9:00 AM meeting at the Masonic Hall in Coulee Dam is for the 2008 Session Committee Chairpersons, not all of the 2007-08 Grand Chapter Committee Chairpersons.
Reminder:  The Grand Coulee Dam Lodge will be holding a breakfast upstairs, so you may want to meet there.  There will also be a DI School of Instruction at 10:00 AM.  A very busy day in the Coulee.
** Marjoe Richards, WGM

NEW GRAND REPRESENTATIVE

Friday, August 18, during the Official Visit at Maple Leaf Chapter was one surprising night for the newest "cow-poke".   I was privileged to present Brother Earl Granger, Ferndale Chapter #223 with a Grand Representative commission to Montana.  Equally surprised was his wife, Sister Donna.
Brother Earl's address is:  2038 S. Nugent Road, Lummi Island, WA 98262.

Stopping Annoying Telemarketing Calls:

You can stop most of them from coming into your home. Here are steps you can take: Add your phone number to the national Do Not Call registry by going online to: donotcall.gov. Or call 1-888-382-1222. Many of these unwanted calls should stop within about 3 months.

(Another late message ...)

Thank you for your prayers ...

Hi Connie,

I want to thank everyone for their prayers. John came through his 8 hour surgery a week ago yesterday better than his doctor had antiscipated. He's doing fine, tires easily, but beginning to get the feelings back in his hands and feet. He can squeeze my hand with both of his and lift his arms slightly. The ambulance brought him back to Gig Harbor yesterday evening to Cottesmore Life Center where they will be working with him to try to help him use his hands, arms and feet again. Praise the Lord. Thank you one and all.

 Hugs to all you pray-ers,

** Mary Smith Rodenbucher

Masonic Bodies in action ...

Connie,
On August 12th:  Evergreen Chapter, Goldendale Lodge, Columbia Gorge Shrine Club and Golden Phoenix Assembly joined together for 4 hours and gathered 475 pounds of food for the local Food Bank in Goldendale.  We also gathered some cash donations.  Our receipt listed a donation in the value of $490.00.  We just put up a sign, stood on the sidewalk and people stopped to help.  All the cans and boxes lined up end to end ran 3/4 of a city block.
This project was put together quickly when the food bank sent out an urgent request to help fill their shelves.  We all think of them at the Holidays, but never in the summer.  People need food all year long.  We were glad we could help.
Thanks to Jack Runyan and Worshipful Master, Ross Herrington for getting us together.

Amaranth News ...
Hi All:
This is information, I got from Carol and Phil Woodland, RM and RP of Golden Sheaf court.  Please keep Brittney and the family in your prayers.  Please pass this information on to the members who do not have e-mail.
Thanks.
** Bonnie McCroskey, Grand Sec. Wash.

Brittney is 16 years old now and a junior in high school.  She was born with a rare disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta type 3 (Brittle Bone disorder) she has fragile bones and breaks them quite often.  She has Rods in the middle of her major bones to prevent major fractures.  She has to have those Rods replaced or fixed at times.  This disorder is very painful for her she has suffered over 50 fractures to this point.  The Surgery this time is a first and at a new hospital with all new doctors to her.  We made a change for reasons of income and travel expenses were hitting our budget.  Shriners Hospital in Spokane is our new change.  The surgery is a first as well but necessary.  They will be pulling out a rod on her right arm it was slipping out and the end was to close to the elbow.  The exciting part is real soon she will be taking part in the new treatment to strengthen her bones.  The day after her surgery she will undergo some test for the treatment and this will give her some major improvement hopefully in cutting down the fractures as well.  Then of course we have to go back in 6 weeks for the post op check up.  School time will have to be put oh hold for the healing time.  They will get her caught up there and Life goes on.  Thank you all for your continued prayers and thoughts of our daughter.  She loves to drive her speedy red wheelchair.  She asked us if we can move the joystick to the left side.  When she can sit up again sure I can't keep her down.  We appreciate any prayers and thoughts you can give.  The surgery is August 27, 2007.  Any one who wants to visit her at the hospital in Spokane are welcomed.
-- Love The Woodland Family Golden Sheaf Amaranth and to many things to name when we join an organization we get involved.  Carol, Phil, and 7 children our youngest is Brittney.  The Woodland Forest is our family joke.  It fits trust me, thanks again.  Phil and Carol Woodland.

Thank you ...
Hi, just wanted to say Thank You to Sister Marjoe for honoring Kirkland Chapter and myself with the appointment to Nevada! What a night it was.
I also want to express Kirkland’s pride in our Worthy Matron, Charlene Trent-Lewis! She did a beautiful job at the OV. For those of you that don’t know her history, she suffered a major stroke about 6 years ago and was told she would never talk, read, or “be normal” again. With lots of courage, determination and a huge amount of work, she has come so very far. The officers and members of Kirkland are very proud of her and so very happy that she has taken the office of Worthy Matron for the 2007-2008 term.
Thanks to all who attended and for all the hugs, cards and congrats I have received. Super Star Love,
** Kathy Neubecker, (Our NEW Grand Representative of Nevada in WA)

Nevada Grand Chapter ...
Hi would you please put the following in your next Stars?
I have been trying to get things together to attend Nevada’s Grand Chapter this year but it looks like I will not be able to attend. I signed up for the B.C. cruise that returns on September 24th and that is the day the Nevada GC begins. The latest flight I can get to Salt Lake City in order to drive to Elko is 11 a.m. and not sure I can be off the boat and to the airport in time for the flight – would need to be there by 9 a.m. There is a direct flight to Elko that leaves at 1 p.m. but it is $500+ which is just too much. The parade of Flags is Monday night so would probably miss that.
I have begun to make plans for attending the 2008 Session for sure and will keep all posted so that we can have a huge group going as it will be loads of fun and great support for one of Washington’s own. My plan is that we would attend GC in Winnemucca and then possibly go to Vegas to celebrate my 60th birthday in style. Please let me know if you are interested in going with us and I will keep you posted.
Again, I am overwhelmed by the appointment and want to thank sister Marjoe for honoring Kirkland Chapter and myself with this great commission. Hugs to all. ** Kathy Neubecker

Crown Chapter news ...
Hello, Connie!  Could this message go in the appropriate "issue", please?

September 6, 2007:
Stated meeting of Crown Chapter: potluck dinner @6:15, Hawaiian dress, long form and Education Night.  In keeping with Education Night, and the start of the school year, Crown will be having a school supplies drive at the September meeting!  These will be donated for students whose families are having difficulties buying supplies for their children.  (The days of the schools having pencils and paper and other supplies for the students are long gone).
Here is a list of suggestions:
Wide ruled notebook paper (lower grades)
College ruled notebook paper (upper grades)
Packs of No. 2 pencils
Pink Pearl erasers
Colored pencils
Spiral bound, one-subject notebooks
Elmer's school glue
Glue sticks
Boxes of Kleenex (it's amazing how much of this the grade schools go through each year)
Yellow high-lighters
Washable colored markers.  Crayons are not necessary, the Worthy Matron hit the jackpot at Wal-Mart.
Black or blue medium point Bic pens, or the equivalent brand.
Anything members can bring will be appreciated! Cash donations will be accepted from those who wish to participate, and find shopping difficult.
Thanks so much, and see you at the meeting!
Star love,
** Pam Sawyer, W.M.

THIS SAYS IT ALL:

Time passes
Life happens.
Distance separates.
Children grow up.
Jobs come and go.
Love waxes and wanes.
Men don't do what they're supposed to do.
Hearts break.
Parents die.
Colleagues forget favors.
Careers end.
BUT.........
Sisters are there, no matter how much time and how many miles are between you. A girl friend is never farther away than needing her can reach.
When you have to walk that lonesome valley and you have to walk it by yourself, the women in your life will be on the valley's rim, cheering you on, praying for you, pulling for you, intervening on your behalf, and waiting with open arms at the valley's end.
Sometimes, they will even break the rules and walk beside you...Or come in and carry you out.
Girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters, daughters-in-law, sisters, sisters-in-law, Mothers, Grandmothers, aunties, nieces, cousins, and extended family, all bless our life!
The world wouldn't be the same without women, and neither would I.  When we began this adventure called womanhood, we had no idea of the incredible joys or sorrows that lay ahead. Nor did we know how much we would need each other.
Every day, we need each other still.
There are more than twenty angels in this world.  Ten are peacefully sleeping on clouds. Nine are playing. And one is reading her email.

MASONIC NEWS

Father’s Lodge

Douglas Malloch

Father’s lodge, I well remember, wasn’t large as lodges go;

There was trouble in December; getting to it through the snow.

But he seldom missed a meeting; drifts or blossoms in the lane,

Still the Tyler head his greetings, winter ice or summer rain.

Father’s lodge thought nothing of it; ‘mid their labors and their cares;

Those old Masons learned to love it; that fraternity of theirs.

What’s a bit of stormy weather, when a little down the road.

Men are gathering together, helping bear each other’s load?

Father’s lodge had made a village; men of father’s sturdy brawn.

Turned a wilderness to tillage; seized the flag, and carried on.

Made a village, built a city, shaped a country, formed a state.

Simple men, not wise nor witty, humble, and yet how great!

Father’s lodge had caught the gleaming of the great Masonic past;

Thinking, toiling, daring, dreaming, they were builders to the last.

Quiet men, not rich nor clever, with the tools they found a hand;

Building for a great forever; first a village, then a land.

Father’s lodge it was no temple, built of steel and carved of stone;

Marble columns, ceilings gilded, father’s lodge has never known.

But a heritage of glory they have left, the humble ones –

They have left their mighty story in the keeping of their sons.

From a newsletter out of Texas.
Shared by Lowry May, my NOB friend ...

Brethren,
This reminder should be posted inside the entrance of every lodge, and any mason who does not abide by it should be reminded by his brethren first, then the Master of the lodge if he still refuses to understand its meaning.  Some of our new masons, and (sigh) some of our "more established" members must have it spelled out for them as well, so I will try to convey it as succintly as possible.
     "Make good men better"
This is a great motto, if used properly, but lodges can quickly lose the meaning and spirit of this fine reminder if it is not monitored constantly by all brethren.  I have been to many lodges (even my own) where the brethren tout these words, but do not make any attempt to live them.
     Listen up, Brother Masons:
To make good men better, it takes "better men" to be role models for the "good men" to see and learn from.
We are all part of this imperfect lodge, which prevents us from always being the model we should be all the time, but our charge is to learn to be as perfect as possible.  How can we accomplish this if we do not make any attempt to "mind our manners" when in the lodge, or fraternizing with other masons?
Should you meet a mason for the first time on the street you would not address him with distaste, nor would you choose to tell him racist jokes or negative things about your lodge.  Of course you wouldn't, because you are proud of your lodge! If you do any of these things in your lodge, are you not defacing the very thing you have sworn to uphold?
For those who have yet to mature into the world, here is the Masonic warning: This is not high school, college, or a "frat". It is not a place where you "let your hair down", or tell lewd jokes at the expense of another to make yourself feel more important.
It is a place where masons "meet to work"; a place meant to be a haven clear of all negatives toward each other, a place to model who can best work and agree.
What is good for the lodge?
o      Fellowship - We should greet each other when possible as we enter the lodge. This should be the job of Entered Apprentices (and/or FCs) so that they can learn the names of other brethren in the lodge, and begin to make bonds with visiting  brethren.
o      Friendship - Brothers should have the contact numbers of all masons in their lodge in order to make contact with any they choose. To withhold a cell number from a lodge brother is essentially saying that you do not trust him. (Shall we continue?)
o      Role Modeling - All Master Masons are role models for EA's and FC's. That is a plain, simple fact. Any Master Mason should be willing to take charge of a brother EA or FC and help him. That is an obligation, not a suggestion. MMs should also be willing to teach EAs/FCs customs, manners, and remind them of etiquette for functions or introductions. That is the fraternal way, and what we should be handing down to our new brothers.
o     Tutoring - Brothers should be willing to teach, listen, or assist the brother who is studying by finding a suitable teacher for him. It should NOT be left to the student to "track down" the teacher…. EVER!!
o     Counseling - When a brother who normally shows up to the lodge is absent for an extended time (for no apparent reason) we should be worried about him. A lodge designee should have a list of these brethren, and should be contacting them monthly to determine their status, offer help, or to pass that request on to the lodge in case another brother can provide the service. We help our own first, and we worry about them when they are not with us.
o     Edification of another - I cannot count the number of times I have heard someone edifying (that's talking good about) another mason in his absence and seeing the admiration of the younger masons in the group. I also cannot count the times that the negatives were elicited about a mason, and younger masons started chiming in with their own negatives about masonic issues or brethren.  We cannot let this happen. The only way to prevent this is to ensure all do not get this kind of conversation started.
o  Controlled discussion of differences - Will we always work best or agree? Certainly not, but we should be constructive about how we solve our differences. Are we ever as ready and willing to take the constructive criticism we dish out? Of course we aren't, so why should we think someone else would like to hear it. Craft your discussions without emotion, or just say you don't agree but cannot verbalize it.  Don't be petty, rude, or condescending to another mason because you do not agree.  Get a neutral party (the Master perhaps?) involved, if necessary, but keep the level of discussion to the point.

What is not good for the lodge?
o     Attitudes - Of any kind, please leave them at the door. It doesn't matter if the mason with whom you are fellowshipping is a lifelong friend, all masons should have the same thoughts in mind when attending lodge. Do what you want outside the lodge, but remember that you represent your lodge when you do ANYTHING!!!!
o     Control Freaks - For those who think they run everything… be my guest (because I have been there) but first roll up your sleeves and lead on. Never ask someone to do something you have the time to do yourself, unless you are asking them to help you. Nobody wishes to be ordered around, and I guarantee you that nobody will think very highly of you if you do.
o     Discriminatory thoughts, remarks, or actions - These are NEVER to be tolerated in a lodge, whether it be in the Bathroom, Kitchen, Dining room, or Lodge room. We are adults, gentlemen, and we should act like adults… not children! Our physical and mental differences are what make us unique, but not what Masonry is supposed to regard. These things should not be used to denigrate any person, more especially a brother mason. They should be used to understand the
o     Blaspheming the Creator's name - This is antithetical to Masonry. Any mason doing this should be taken behind the woodshed immediately. (No joke!) Seriously, this is an offense to many people, and you never know who is going to hear it. Said in reaction to pain is no excuse.  Masons should be prepared to reprimand any Mason who represents himself (and the lodge) in this manner.
o     Other profanity - Ok, it is bad enough that I have to include this item, because the above should take care of it, but just for those of us who are a little slower….. NO PROFANITY IN THE LODGE, WHATSOEVER!!!
o     Lewd or racist jokes - I cannot believe this still exists. I learned them as a child from more racist adults of that age, but as an adult I know they are not proper under any circumstances. I cannot "un-learn" what I learned, so I try to forget them.  These have no place in lodges that are trying to mold young men's minds.

Some will most certainly take offense at the above words, and if they knew me would probably convict me of them occasionally. I am not saying that I am on the "high road". I am just as humble as the next mason in trying to conquer the vileness within me. It is my duty to myself to quell those thoughts and actions as much as it is my obligation to  aid a falling brother in his reformation.
Please join me in making this lodge, wherever you may choose to display this, full of proud masons who exude the following qualities for younger masons to see:
  1. Honor to the fraternity to never to let it be defaced by bad intentions.
  2. Virtuous in our lodges, and in our daily lives.
  3. Truthful to ourselves about our need to change.
  4. Fidelity to our practices, so that younger men will want to be like us.
  5. Courage to speak out when others are not following Masonic principles.
  6. Loyalty to our brothers in letting them know we care, and are willing to help.
  7. Patience enough to wait and watch them change.
  8. Humble enough to accept criticism when we falter, or commendation when we succeed.
  9. Proud enough to commend the changes we see in our brothers.
Thank you for your help.

LOWRY'S HINTS
  • HINT 1:  To keep ants out of the house, find where the ants are entering the house and sprinkle a "barrier" of cinnamon or any type of ground pepper to block their way.

  • HINT 2: If you have tarnished silverware try this handy hint out:   Line a cake pan with aluminum foil. Fill with water and add 1 Tbls. of baking soda per 2 cups of water. Heat to 150 degrees. Lay silverware in pan, touching aluminum foil.  Watch the stains disappear!

  • HINT 3: Peroxide is great to clean your counters and kitchen table with. It kills all the germs and leaves a fresh smell. Just pour a small amount on a rag and wipe.

  • HINT 4: Try this next time you have a sinus infection or just a stuffed up nose. Tilt her head back and spray a mixture of 1/2 water and 1/2 peroxide into the nostrils. Hold for a few minutes and then blow into tissue.   It helps to kill the bacteria.

JOKES

When my mother was called for jury duty, she felt confident of her ability to answer the questions asked of prospective jurors.
As a young attorney, I had filled her in on what to expect.
Asked about the occupations of family members, Mom answered, "My son is a lawyer."
As a follow-up, she was asked if she had ever used the services of an attorney.
            "Only to mow my lawn."

On a busy Friday night at the restaurant where I'd recently started waiting tables, the owner suddenly emerged from the kitchen and handed me money.
"We're in trouble!" He said. "We're out of quarters, and customers are waiting. Go next door and get me $40 worth."
I ran to the supermarket next door, but a cashier said she wasn't allowed to give out that many quarters. Determined, I sprinted to a convenience store two blocks away, but it was closed. At a gas station farther down the road, the clerk took pity and gave me the four rolls of quarters. Twenty minutes after I'd left, I handed the coin rolls to my boss. "Where are the quarters?" He asked.
            "Right here," I said breathlessly.
His face sank. "I meant chicken quarters."

My teenager was headed to school one morning when I told him that the neck tag on his shirt was hanging out. "I know," he replied. "It's a fad me and some of the guys started."
Weeks later, as the style persisted, I commented, "I can't stand it! Every time I see that, I want to fix it for you." I gently tucked the tag in place and rumpled his hair.
"Yeah," he said smiling slyly. "All the girls do!”

An applicant was filling out a job application. When he came to the question, "Have you ever been arrested?" he wrote, "No."

The next question, intended for people who had answered in the affirmative to the previous question, was "Why?"
The applicant answered it anyway: "Never got caught!”

HELOISE
  • Avoiding Pickpockets:  When you are on vacation, do pay attention to the people around you, particularly those closest to you and also to the surroundings. Be aware that pickpockets often work in teams and look for vulnerable people or easy marks.
