STARS OF WASHINGTON

April 21st, 2007
#7-017

The sun was warm but the wind was chill.
You know how it is with an April day.
When the sun is out and the wind is still,
You're one month on in the middle of May.

But if you so much as dare to speak,
a cloud come over the sunlit arch,
And wind comes off a frozen peak,
And you're two months back in the middle of March.
-  Robert Frost

MESSAGES FROM MY MAILBOX ..

Distinguished Guests Letter to the Chapters ...
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Grand Chapter is but a few short months away and I am asking for your help.  We would appreciate your help providing cookies for our hospitality and distinguished guest room.  This year will be a bit different than years in the past.  Our Washington State members are invited to join us in the hospitality room, so we will need more cookies than usual.
Remember this year we will have numerous General Grand Chapter folks, besides our own and Worthy Grand Matrons and Worthy Grand Patrons from other jurisdictions.
I would also appreciate any silk corsages you may have tucked away that you aren't using.
Hope to see you all there with a hug and a smile.

Sadness ...
Sister Carroll Stradley of Lackamas Chapter, Washougal, peacefully passed away in her sleep Saturday night, April 14th.  Memorial services will be at the Masonic Hall in Washougal, Saturday, April 21st, at 11:00 AM.

The news of Sister Carroll's passing is particularly saddening to me.  Brother Phil Green, Associate Grand Patron, and I had selected Carroll to be one of our Deputy Instructors for the 2007-08 Grand Chapter Year.  While the Deputy Instructor announcements have not begun, I wanted to acknowledge the fact that she had been selected to serve in this capacity.  Sister Carroll was very excited about this appointment and had enjoyed meeting the other Deputies at their get-together earlier this year.  She loved "communicating" and I had received several fun letters from her.  She has had many pen pals over the years and she had looked forward to working with her chapters and her many friends in the Southwest area of Washington.  She loved serving as Ruth in her chapter and attended Sister Doris Edwards' reception this spring.  Sister Carroll has left a hole in our extended Grand Family.  We will miss her and send our heartfelt sympathy to Brother Kent.  With a saddened heart,
** Marjoe Richards, Associate Grand Matron

International Assn. of Administrative Professionals ...
Connie:
This was taken from the website of the International Association of Administrative Professionals® (www.IAAP-hq.org).  I have been a proud IAAP member for almost 11 years, it is a great organization. The International President-Elect Judy McCoy CPS/CAP is from Bellingham Chapter (Bellingham, Washington).
This annual event was originally organized in 1952 as "National Secretaries Week" by the National Secretaries Association (now known as the International Association of Administrative Professionals®) in conjunction with public relations executive Harry Klemfuss and a consortium of office product manufacturers. It was established as an effort to recognize secretaries for their contributions in the workplace, and to attract people to secretarial/administrative careers.
In the year 2000, IAAP announced a name change for Professional Secretaries Week and Professional Secretaries Day. The names were changed to Administrative Professionals Week® and Administrative Professionals Day® to keep pace with changing job titles and expanding responsibilities of today's administrative workforce.
Administrative Professionals Week (APW) is always held annually during the last full week in April (standard Sunday through Saturday calendar week).
Administrative Professionals Day (APD) is always held the Wednesday of that week.
Since its inception, APW has been sponsored solely by IAAP. A common public misconception is that APW was created by flower distributors, candy companies, or greeting card manufacturers so they could sell more products. The truth, however, is that while gifts often are appreciated, this event was never meant to obligate employers or managers to give gifts.
Over the years, Administrative Professionals Week has become one of the largest workplace observances. The event is celebrated worldwide, bringing
together millions of people for community events, educational seminars, and individual corporate activities recognizing support staff with gifts of appreciation.
Thanks Connie, for all you do for our beautiful Order!
** Melanie Loughmiller CAP
Thank you Sister Melanie for ALL you do!!!  And thanks for setting me straight on this 'day'!  Been awhile since I was a Secretary ... and you know?  Believe that I was called a Clerk Typist or something like that ... but when I retired ... I had moved on to a Storekeeper position.  (That knowledge and a couple of bucks, will buy you a cup of coffee ...)

I have an item for your news:
We were pleasantly surprised when Linda Sanders, Vickie Rauser and Jeff Bolstad came to our Worthy Grand Patron's Homecoming in Brooks, Alberta on Saturday, April 14.  It was wonderful to see our old friends from Montana representing your jurisdiction.
We hope to see many of you at our Grand Session in Edmonton, Alberta, May 31, June 1, 2 and 3.  Jeff will be conducting the worship service on Thursday night and will entertain us on Saturday.  Sister Barbara Benton and Brother Bill Owen will be in attendance so come and help us give them a big western welcome.

Chapter visit ... NC style ...
Two weeks ago today my husband and I visited the loveliest chapter while on vacation. It was Electa #228, located in Candler, North Carolina.
We had such a nice visit! The Worthy Matron was finishing up her second year in a row, and they were preparing for their upcoming installation.
It was so pleasant to be examined by such nice people. As the chapter was preparing to open we realized there were several empty seats and offered to pro-tem if the Worthy Matron would like. My husband pro-temmed the Chaplain's position, and I pro-temmed (?) Martha. When we made the offer the WM was so surprised, and said they never asked because they didn't want to offend. We both feel that it's much more fun to attend a meeting if you have something to do, and we said as much. They proceeded to make us feel like family.
So just a word to those of you out there as you're traveling - if you visit a chapter and they have open positions you're willing to pro-tem, don't be afraid to say so. Though some of our floor work may be a little different from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, I seriously doubt anyone would be stuffy enough to say they'd rather have an empty chair....

PGM Patsy Taylor's Oregon Memorial -
Over 100 family and friends gathered at the Masonic Center in Grants Pass, Oregon, to pay their final respects for Patsy Jean Taylor, PGM, of Oregon who died in Montana on March 19, 2007, just 2 days after her 76th birthday.  Officiating was Pastor Lynn Rettig, who came to Oregon from Montana at the request of the family.  Josephine Chapter (Patsy's Oregon Chapter) performed the funeral service with PGP Claude "Bud" Smith serving as WP.  Bud was Patsy's WGP when they presided at the "Pot of Gold Session" in 1984.  Shirley Roarig, Patsy's youngest sister, sang "He Grew the Tree" and a recording of Patsy singing "Watch the Lamb" was played.  Also providing music was tenor Bud Rose from her chapter.  It was a beautiful and meaningful tribute and a fitting farewell to a beloved friend.  It is Jay Taylor's wish to return to Montana and daughter Sherie will travel with him.  On a personal note, Patsy was my first WGM and I thank all of the Star members in Montana who gave her their love and friendship.  God Bless all of you.

Look for Busy Birds This Spring
Springtime is nesting time for many birds. Early morning choruses grow louder as birds repeatedly sing songs to attract mates and defend their territory.
After birds pair up, they'll build nests, lay eggs and raise their young. Some birds will go on to repeat this cycle as many as three times. To help birds prepare for the rigors of nesting season, consider offering high energy foods such as suet, mealworms and peanuts.  Many stores carry a variety of packaged materials that birds can use to build their nests. This not only makes their lives a little easier, but it also helps them choose your yard for their new home.  You can also encourage birds to raise families in your yard by providing them with safe and enticing nesting spaces. Add new nest boxes to your backyard habitat and make sure any existing boxes are clean and ready for occupancy.

SUMMARY OF MY LAST YEAR ON THE COMPUTER
AND .... If you don't send this e-mail to at least 144,000 people in the next 70 minutes, a large dove with diarrhea will land on your head at 5:00 PM this afternoon and the fleas from 12 camels will infest your back, causing you to grow a hairy hump. I know this will occur because it actually happened to a friend of my next door neighbor's ex-mother-in-law's second husband's cousin's beautician...
Have a wonderful day....  A South American scientist from Argentina , after a lengthy study, has discovered that people with insufficient brain and sexual activity read their e-mail with their hand on the mouse. Don't bother taking it off now, it's too late!

TEN-FOUR GOOD BUDDY!

(Wish I had known about this during the time we were knee-deep in calving and lambing ... but perhaps it will be helpful to others like my good friend, Louise Belsby!  Or perhaps it will be helpful to many of you who have your own spring work to do that causes a bit of stress on all those within shoutin' distance!)

Calving and lambing season is a stressful time of year in the rural land, because sleep-deprived people are interacting with each other in smelly, mucky conditions.  Inevitably these conditions lead to some nasty exchanges that can result in a lot of shouted name-calling.  Long ago I gave up on the swearing jar at our house, because it was a bookkeeping nightmare - especially during calving season.  First of all, there was a lot of discussion about what constituted a swear word, and then there were too many IOUs in lieu of payments in the jar, or there were so many unauthorized loans taken out of the jar that it just didn't work!
This year, just in time for calving season, I received the very same email from three different friends - Sloopy Snicklebrains, Dorky Dippindoodle, and Sloppy Farkledunkin - and I laughed just as hard each time, so I decided I had to pass the fun on.
It seems that in the children's book "Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot' by Dave Pilkey, the evil Professor Poopypants forces everyone to assume new names.  The email encourages the reader to use the professor's code to assume new names for everyone.  The premise behind this is that children laugh an average of 146 times per day as compared to 4 times per day for adults.
For me, assuming new names has been an instant solution to the swearing jar dilemma during calving season.  Each person has to use the professor's code to assume a new name that makes calving season less stressful.  For example, I can now shout, 'Watch out, Dorky Gizzardnose, this cow is on the fight!' or 'What Batty Dinglelips left the gate open?' and no one seems offended ... just amused.
So, if you want to increase your laugh ratio, figure out your new name, your family member's names, the hired man's new name, etc. and start shouting things like, 'Time for supper, Goobersnicklebrains!' loudly right away.  It worked for us!  I have listed the code below, but feel free to throw out the code and just cleverly concoct new names.  Choosing your code name should be like choosing a CB radio handle in the '70's - left to your imagination and pure ingenuity!
    The Code of Professor Poppypants:
1.  Use the third letter of your first name to determine your new first name:
a = Snickle; b = Doombah; c = Goober; d = Cheesy; e = Crusty; f = Greasy; g = Dumbo; h = Farcus; i = Dorky; j = Doofus; k = Funky; l = Bozo; m = Sleezy; n = Sloopy; o = Fluffy; p = Stinky; 1 = Slimy; r = Dorfus; s = Snooty; t = Tootsie; u = Dipsy; v = Sneezy; w = Liver; x = Skippy; y = Dinky, and x = Zippy.

2.  Use the second letter of your last name to determine the first half of your new last name:
a = Dippin; b = Feather; c = Batty; d = Burger; e = Chicken; f = Barfly; g = Lizard; h = Waffle; i = Farkle; j = Monkey; k = Flippin; l = Floppin; m = Bubble; n = Rhino; o = Potty; p = Hamster; q = Buckle; r = Gizzard; s = Lickin; t = Snickle; u = Chuckle; v = Pickle; w = Hubble; x = Dingle; y = Gorilla; and z = Girdle.

3.  Using the third letter of your last name to determine the second half of your new last name:
q = butt; b = blob; c = face; d = nose; e = lump; f = breath; g = pants; h = shorts; i = lips; j = honker; k = head; l = tush; m = chunks; n = dunkin; o = brains; p = biscuits; q = toes; r = doodle; s = fanny; t = sniffer; u = sprinkles; v = frack; w = squirt; x = humperdinck; y = hiney; and z = juice.

Thus, for example, George W. Bush's new name is Fluffy Chucklefanny, and I am Snooty Chickensniffer signing off!
** Agri-News, Montana

So I am (using my maiden name so Ted and I won't have the last name when it comes to this code ... ) Sloopy Floppinlump ... and Ted's is Cheesy Waffledoodle.  And do you know how hard all these code words were to type????  And that good friend who went to school with me for 12 years?  You know ... Dipsy Farklesniffer and his wife ... Fluffy Chuckledoodle (used her maiden name, too!)  Or how about our Brewster friend ... Dorky Pottybrains!  I could go on and on ... but better not!

CHIPS ...
Attention All,
Bellow is the copy of the letter I sent to the Stars and other Masonic Papers in Washington. Following the letter I have an update on the proposed schedule along with the actors who will be participating.
Please let the fraternity know as they have once again asked for the use of a Masonic Lodge for some of their future events.  The only difficulty when they use a lodge hall is it's closeness to the Jim French Productions Office due to contractual guidelines set up by the screen actors guild (a so many mile radius).

CHIPS update ...
To the members of the WA-CHIP's Board and the Masonic Publications and friends your assistance in this effort and help in letting the Masonic Family and friends know will be greatly appreciated.
Brethren,
Friends, Brothers, Sisters, and Members of the Masonic Family your help is needed.  The weekend of June 22nd and 23rd will bring some very well know
names to the Seattle area.
Over the past 3 years the organization I am speaking about has help promote WA-CHIP's and will again be assisting thru TV and Radio announcements in promoting the program.  What I am asking, is that in return for their continued support we join them if we have the time available at their Show Case and meet and thank them for their continued support.  The groups I am talking about are REP's (the Radio Enthusiasts of Puget Sound) and REN (the Radio Enthusiasts Network for the Visually Impaired).
You will as in the past get a chance to meet those participating in the Show Case.  This year the Show Case will be held at the Coast Hotel in Bellevue.  Scheduled  performers will be; Eddie Carroll, Chuck McCann, Dick Van Pattern, Dick Beals, Gil Scraton Jr., Kathryn Crosby, Donald Buka, Frank Breese, Rosemary Rice, Gloria McMillian, Esther McVey, plus several local radio personalities.  This event will be taking place on June 22nd and 23rd. One of the reenactments planed is the Jack Benny Show.
What I am asking brethren is if you want to meet with people who care about the community as much as we as Masons do and if you have the time come
to the Show Case and enjoy some great entertainment of the past live and in person.
For more information contact me at <vdkr@mindspring.com> or contact REP's at <repsclub@aol.com>.

Masonic tidbits ...

* Profile in Masonry ... George Gershwin
American composer who brought jazz idiom to classical music forms in his orchestral works, such as 'Rhapsody in Blue' and composed the scores for many musical comedies.  His collaborations with his brother, lyricist Ira Gershwin, include the popular song 'Fascinatin' Rhythm'  (1924) and the opera 'Porgy and Bess' (1935).

* We might as well profit by the mistakes others have made for we all will not live long enough to make all of them ourselves.  ... Uncle Joe, The Chinaberry Tree Philosopher.

* RUSTOLEUM:  Masonry, whether it is structural or speculative, needs most to have action.  Machines - human, mechanical or fraternal - will rust out in far less time than they will wear out!  (Alberta GL Bulletin)

* WASHINGTON AND THE CHERRY TREE:  Mason Locke Weems, known as 'Parson' wrote the first biography of Washington, adding the cherry tree story after several editions.  He was a preacher and itinerant peddler, member of Lodge No. 50, Dumfries, Virginia.

* DID YOU KNOW?  SOLOMON ...
SOL:  Latin for Sun
OM:  The Hindu sacred word, comparable to the Hebrew 'Jehovah'.
ON:  The sacred Egyptian name for God.

* FREEMASONRY IS kindness in the home, honesty in business, courtesy in society, fairness in work, pity and concern for the unfortunate, resistance toward the wicked, help for the weak, trust in the strong, forgiveness for the penitent, love for one another, and reverence for God.  -- Author unknown.

An Evening with Rudyard Kipling

Brothers,
Due to some brothers who had conflicts and can't make it, there are a limited number of tickets available for Oriental 74's third annual "An Evening with Rudyard Kipling."  It is this Monday at 7:00 PM in the Rose Room Annex on the 5th floor of the Spokane Masonic Center.

Rudyard Kipling was a Freemason, poet and the author of "The Jungle Book," "Gunga Din," "The Man Who Would Be King," and "If-" to name a few.  Although
regarded by many as the penultimate Englishman, he was born and spent much of his life in India.
The evening will consist of Indian Cuisine (ranging from mild to very spicy), readings of some of Kipling's works, dicussion of his life and times and fellowship.  This is an open event, so ladies and friends are welcome.  Tickets are $9 each.
If interested you can contact me by either email or phone.
Fraternally,
** Jason Gordon, (509) 251-1483

LOWRY'S HINTS

HINT 1:   Gum in your Hair:  Just take the gum coated hair and dip in a small bowl that has some Coca Cola in it. Let sit for just a few minutes and the gum will wipe right off.
              * * * * * *
HINT 2:  Tanning:  Someone told me about using Coca Cola when tanning.  They rubbed it all
over, laid out for a while, and when finished got up & had the best tan ever. And it lasted for about 6-7 months.  Now it's even used in the tanning machines and it really works.
                * * * * * *
HINT 3:  Cleaning Disinfectant: Vinegar (either white or cider) is the best disinfectant around. It beats anything man made and is certainly healthier and cheaper, use vinegar all around the house to disinfect and clean many surfaces, although don't use this on furniture made with fabric.   You can use vinegar straight or equal parts vinegar and water.
                * * * * * *
HINT 4:  Cleaning behind your refrigerator will keep it running longer and more efficiently.  Make sure the unit is level. An unlevel refrigerator works harder than it needs to and wastes energy.

JOKES

A sweet grandmother telephoned Whittier Hospital. She timidly asked, "Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing? The operator said "I'll be glad to help, dear.  What's the name and room number?"
The grandmother in her weak tremulous voice said, "Norma Findlay, Room 302 "
The Operator replied, "Let me place you on hold while I check with her nurse." After a few minutes the Operator returned to the phone, "Oh, good news. Her nurse has told me that Norma is doing very well. Her blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back as normal and her physician, Dr. Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged Tuesday."
The Grandmother said, "Thank you. That's wonderful! I was so worried! God bless you for the good news."
The operator replied, "You're more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?"
The Grandmother said, "No, I'm Norma Findlay in 302. No one ever tells me anything!

A distraught senior citizen phoned her doctor's office.
"Is it true," she wanted to know, "that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life?"
"Yes, I'm afraid so," the doctor told her.
There was a moment of silence before the senior lady replied, "I'm wondering, then, just how serious is my condition. This prescription is marked 'NO REFILLS'

I asked my two-year-old to take his dirty clothes and put them into the hamper.
He looked puzzled, and I explained, "You know; it's the place where we put our dirty clothes before they're washed."
My son picked up his things, trotted into my bedroom, and threw his clothes on the floor on his dad's side of the bed.

HELOISE

AND A WORD FROM YOURS TRULY

Am still being a Care Giver ... and really don't find any enjoyment out of it!  But if you think I am not having any fun, you oughta talk with Ted!  He is MISERABLE!  The acute pain in his back and hip have pretty well subsided ... but the knee!  That is a different story!  He has an appointment with the Orthopedist in MAY so will know more then.  Perhaps we will be able to see many of you at the Whitman County PM Luncheon next Wednesday and dinner later that evening at the Inland Empire PM & PP.  Will be great getting out into the 'real' world once again!  We have stayed home so much lately that I am having a hard time figuring out new menus.  As you know, we had to cancel our trip to Hawaii ... but watch out NEXT YEAR!
My Dad is getting better ... YAHOO!  When he came home from the hospital after his bout with double pneumonia, he caught a good case of the stomach flu!  He really has determination, boy howdy, and says that he is going to LIVE!  Good to hear ... is 101 and 9 months old!  Am going to write the White House again and get him a Birthday Card from the President.  That is always a conversation piece!
Remember .... to share your new Ode Cards with me!  It's slim pickins'  on these reminder lists as I have only received a few Ode Cards!  Hint!  Hint!  I do thank, though, those received this week from Valgene Orlando (Delta Chapter); Bonnie Rail (Pine Tree Chapter); Pat McKinley (Martha Chapter); June Lee (Oasis Chapter); and Marilyn Sorenson (Evening Star Chapter).
Until next time ... Hearty Patriot Hugs and happy thoughts.
