DUES - R- DUE

The Secretary is at her desk
The Worthy Matron and Patron in the East
The routine work of the Chapter
Excites them not the least.

But here's the picture not so good
The Secretary is in tears
She just made up a list of all
The members in arrears.

You've overlooked your dues
That you were going to pay
So why not make a check out now
And get it off today!

Please make the Secretary and Treasurer happy ... send in your Dues.
Take them out of the 'to-do-pile'!
Check to see if you have a tan 2007 card.

Thank You ...
Hi Connie,
I just wanted to thank Darel Maxfield for all the donations he has made to "Wrap Them In Love".  Bill got back about a week ago from another trip to So. Dakota to the Rose Bud Indian Res.  Ellen sent 1/2 a load and Darel the other 1/2 load.  The people back there are so needy and appreciative for all they receive.  Thanks to the Grand Masters Lady Diane for contacting Darel to contact Ellen who contacted us so Bill could contact Darel.
If anyone wishes to donate toward the expense of the trip to S. Dakota it would be very much appreciated.  We have to rent a U-haul trailer and our son is using his and will be for quite some time.  So, more expense.  It's over $500. each time for gas.

Shooting victim in Utah ...
Just an FYI on one of the men who was hit at the Trolley Square shooting last Monday (2/12) in Salt Lake City:
Shawn Munns is a nephew of Past Grand Master David Barron. He is a Past State Master Councilor of Utah DeMolay and is a member of Unity Lodge No. 18 in Ogden. Shawn's mother, Sue Munns, is a Past Grand Guardian of Utah Job's Daughters.
Shawn successfully underwent surgery to remove three "floaters"  resting near his liver, lung and colon. Floaters are shotgun pellets which fragmented after impact. There are several floaters that remain and are not considered threatening at this time. His condition is now listed as serious and he is expected to make a full recovery.

Interesting ... news in Scotland ...
I am thrilled and blessed to tell you that at our District Grand Chapter Annual Meeting yesterday, I was nominated and elected into the office of Grand Junior Chaplain.  Normally a Brother takes this office, but as there are no new men coming up to keep things going, and no PGPs wanted to take the step again, it came down to a Sister taking the office - and I am so pleased to take this position. It may be (or not) the case that I will go to the top as WGP if still no brothers
appear (very doubtful). So I may in 3 years time be installed as WGP for our District (similar to your States)alongside the WGM! Who knows - time will tell.

FDA reissues Internet Drug Warning
NewsEmergency.com

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has become aware that a number of Americans who placed orders for specific drug products over the Internet (Ambien, Xanax, Lexapro, and Ativan), instead received a product that, according to preliminary analysis, contains haloperidol, a powerful anti-psychotic drug.
Therefore, the Reports show several consumers in the United States have sought emergency medical treatment for symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, muscle spasms and muscle stiffness after ingesting the suspect product. Haloperidol can cause muscle stiffness and spasms, agitation, and sedation. agency is reissuing its warning to consumers about the possible dangers of buying prescription drugs online.

FDA laboratory analysis of the misrepresented tablets is ongoing, but preliminary analysis indicates they contain haloperidol, the active ingredient in a prescription drug used primarily to treat schizophrenia. FDA learned about these mislabeled and potentially dangerous products after their recipients complained to a U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturer.
The origin of these tablets is unknown but the packages were postmarked in Greece. Photographs of the tablets in question and the shipping packages can be seen at online.
If the tablets received from an Internet seller resemble those in the photos and haloperidol was not specifically ordered, do not take these tablets. Instead, consumers should notify their health care provider. and report the suspected products to FDA.
Although the involved consumers have named several Internet Web sites where the products were purchased, identifying the vendors is difficult because of the deceptive practices of many commercial outlets on the Internet. FDA is investigating this illicit trade and plans to release appropriate information when it is available.
Taking medication that contains an active ingredient other than what was prescribed by a qualified health care professional is generally unsafe. FDA continuously warns U.S. consumers of the possible dangers of buying prescription drugs.

News from Massachusetts ...
You may tell your readers that in Massachusetts the candidates will visit as many chapters as they can from the First Official Visitation (usually the first Saturday in December) to Grand Chapter Session in May, and attend as many special nights as they can.  The WM would ask if there are any candidates for Grand Chapter at their meeting.  The candidate would introduce themselves and the office that they are running for.  This would include Associate Grand Conductress, Grand Sentinel and Grand Chapter Boards (which includes the Eastern Star Charitable Foundation Inc., Educational Fund Board and Isadore Forbes Benevolence Board - ESTARL is appointed by the newly elected WGM). They are invited to speak at the March Association Meetings and at Grand Chapter. They have 3 minutes to tell the members their qualifications and why they seek that position.  Their names will appear in the Grand Chapter's "Call" along with the social events that will take place at the Grand Chapter Session and anything that will be voted upon. It was suggested by the previous WGM's: "Each Chapter may receive visitors or not at their individual Chapters Annual Meeting.  If not, place the statement in your Notice / Communication that this Meeting shall be closed to all but Members of this Chapter.  If the meeting is open than the Worthy Matron may at her and the Chapters discretion escort any non Chapter Members from the Chapter Room while reports are read and finances or other subjects deemed private to the Chapter are being discussed."
** Dianna Gillard, PM
Interesting, huh!  I was relating to Dianna that we do not have any closed meetings in our chapters ... even when the year-end reports are read and finances are discussed, as all OES members are invited to attend.
Also ... I enjoyed reading the part where those running for Grand Chapter Offices have 3 minutes to tell members of their qualifications and why they seek that position.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS VS MILITARY FRIENDS

This was forwarded to us by our son ... and after reading it ... I though ...  Ain't it the truth???? There is a difference!!!!  I spent 22 of Ted's 26.5 years in the military with him ... and there isn't a day goes by that we are not reminded of something that happened during those years in the USAF.  I can call my friend Junette in Minnesota right now and we could talk for hours ... as if the many years we have been apart are only a figment of our imagination!  She is the one that I played Yahchee (can't remember how to spell it ... and spell check is no help!)  anyway ... we would play many games!  While our husbands were deployed to the far corners of the earth, we would get the youngun's settled in for the night and then call each other on the phone and roll the dice.  There was no point in cheating ... and you know?  We never thought to do it either!  We still laugh over our wild games!

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Get upset if you're too busy to talk to them for a week.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Are glad to see you after years, and will happily carry on the same conversation you were having last time you met.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Never ask for food.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Are the reason you have no food.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Call your parents Mr. And Mrs.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Call your parents mom and dad.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Have never seen you cry.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Cry with you.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Borrow your stuff for a few days then give it back.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Keep your stuff so long they forget it's yours.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Know a few things about you.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Could write a book with direct quotes from you.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Would knock on your door.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Walk right in and say, "I'm home!"

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Have shared a few experiences...
MILITARY FRIENDS: Have shared a lifetime of experiences no Civilian could ever dream of...

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Will take your drink away when they think you've had enough.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Will look at you stumbling all over the place and say, "You better drink the rest of that, you know we don't waste ... that's alcohol abuse!!" Then carry you home safely and put you to bed...

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Are for a while.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Are for life.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Will ignore this.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Will forward this.

Figure This - Math Challenge for Families
http://figurethis.org/

The Figure This motto is 'helping families enjoy mathematics outside school through a series of fun and engaging, high-quality challenges.'  Developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in cooperation with the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, Widmeyer Communications, and the Learning First Alliance, this site strives to help students 'master the higher-level concepts and approaches to problem solving that are key to success in work and everyday life.'  Aimed at the middle school student, the challenges are activities that students can do at home with their families.  To make the material more engaging, 'cartoon characters named Polygon, Tessellation, Exponent, Tangent, and Axis illustrate the challenge features.  They think math is great!' - as will you and your family when you meet the characters.  The material is downloadable in PDF format with associated technical instructions for the printing.  Here's a great opportunity for you to 'figure this' with your children!

Girl Power!
http://www.health.org/gpower/
Girl Power! is a 'national public education campaign sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help encourage and motivate 9- to 13- year-old girls to make the most of their lives.  Girls at 8 or 9 typically have very strong attitudes about their health, so Girl Power! seeks to reinforce and sustain these positive values among girls ages 9-13 by targeting health messages to the unique needs, interests, and challenges of girls.'  Find great information about self-esteem, stress, eating disorders, sex and drug abuse.  There's also a track for parents and guardians to follow if they're interested - see reports and resources regarding issues that are probably affecting your youngster.  This is a great informative site for all parents as well as children

Calendars through the Ages, WebExhibits
http://webexhibits.org/calendars/

Now that we have settled into the New Year, you might want to delve into the history of the calendar (hopefully, you have already gotten your 2007 one organized!).  The pressure is off so take a few minutes to 'explore the fascinating history of the human endeavor to organize our lives in accordance with the sun and stars.'   You'll see how calendars are based upon astronomical events and learn the basis for the concept of the year and month.  The various calendars are explained, covering those in use today and also those no longer used and some reserved for the future, others for different planets - there really should be a Martian calendar!  Good luck with your organizational endeavors; just think how difficult a task it would be without such a tool as the calendar!

MINUTE MAN AWARDS

WGM Joanne Clark is honoring the Masons at the Official Visits this year.  She is selecting a Mason from a list given to her form the Worthy Matrons of each Chapter.  They will be called the "Minuteman" to go along with her patriotic theme. To qualify for the award, the Mason must be a 10 year member of Eastern Star, have served as Worthy Patron in the Chapter, and been active in the Chapter.  The pins are beautiful and were purchased from Dave Hattrick of ID, now residing for a spell in AZ.
So let's give these outstanding Masons some credit for all their work they do for our beautiful Order!  (For July, August, September, October, November & December  ... please check in the archives on Connie's Corner on the GC of WA's website ... www.washingtonoes.org

LOWRY'S HINTS

HINT 1:  This Valentine's Day, don't fret over drooping flowers. Plunge your flowers in water, then recut the ends and put back into fresh cold water, to revitalize them.

* * * * * * *
HINT 2:  Tired of rummaging through your jewelry box to only find one of your favorite earrings? Keep them easily paired by looping them through button holes.   Not only does this work on hanging earrings and studs, but it's an easy way to keep your earrings stored when traveling.

* * * * * * *

HINT 3: To reuse a sealed envelope, put it in the freezer for a few hours, then slide a knife under the flap to open.  The envelope can then be resealed. .

* * * * * * *
HINT 4:    Clothes:   Wearing proper indoor clothes in order to keep the thermostat at an acceptable level is a comfort issue that should be measured by each individual's need.  If one feels comfortable with a sweater, hat and warm socks, that could work as a way to reduce the heating costs. However, if it makes someone uncomfortable with all that gear around the house then they may need to focus on other aspects of frugal heating tips.  Quick fact: 50% of your body heat exits through the head.

And a home tip from me (thanks to Windermere Salesman, Chuck Brockway ...)  Keep a multi-purpose fire extinguisher in the kitchen and on each floor of the house.  Inspect and recharge if pressure is below the operating range.  Review a fire escape plan with your household.

JOKES

Every Friday after work, a mathematician goes down to the Ice Cream Parlor, sits in the second-to-last seat, turns to the last seat, which is empty, and asks a girl, who isn't there, if he can buy her an ice cream cone.
The owner, who is used to the weird, local university types, always shrugs but keeps quiet. But when Valentine's Day arrives, and the mathematician makes a particularly heart wrenching plea into empty space, curiosity gets the better of him, and he says, "I apologize for my stupid questions, but surely you know there is NEVER a woman sitting in that last stool, man. Why do you persist in asking out empty space?"
The mathematician replies, "Well, according to quantum physics, empty space is never truly empty. Virtual particles come into existence and vanish all the time. You never know when the proper wave function will collapse and a girl might suddenly appear there."
The owner raises his eyebrows. "Really? Interesting. But couldn't you just ask one of the girls who comes here every Friday if you could buy HER a cone? Never know... she might say yes."
The mathematician laughs. "Yeah, right. How likely is THAT to happen?"

A New York boy was being led through the swamps of Louisiana by his cousin.
"Is it true that an alligator won't attack you if you carry a flashlight?"
The cousin smirked and replied, "Depends on how fast ya carry the flashlight."

MY SISTER was trying to sell her house in the Colorado Rockies. It was a real dream home, except for the extremely steep driveway. While a real-estate agent was showing the house to a couple one snowy day, they heard a loud noise. Everyone ran to the window. The agent's car, parked in the driveway, had slipped off and rolled partway down the mountainside. My sister expressed regret, telling the agent and her clients that such a thing had never occurred before. Just then her son sauntered in and said, "Hey, Mom, the tow truck is here -- same one we always use."  --Contributed to "Life In These United States" by B. V.

REFUSING TO BELIEVE that we were only social bridge players, a caller pressured my wife into accepting an invitation to enter a tournament. Completely outclassed, we spent a miserable evening being harangued by experts about our many misplays and sloppy bidding.
My wife was ready for the next such invitation. "Let me be frank," she said to the caller. "My husband and I think bridge is just something to keep our hands busy while we're talking." --Contributed to "Life In These United States"

I AM A BAPTIST and my husband is a Roman Catholic. We enrolled our children in a Catholic elementary school that was constantly raising funds through bake sales and other events. I was often called upon to contribute cakes and cookies.
After one particularly trying day at work, I heard the phone ringing as I rushed in the door. It was the school principal, who asked me to bake another cake "for a bazaar." Out of breath and out of sorts, I said, "This is the third time this month you have asked me to bake a cake. What do you Catholics do with all these Baptist cakes?"
"Why," she replied with a laugh, "they're our best sellers. We put them on a table marked 'Baptist Cakes Half Price.'"
I baked two cakes for the bazaar. --Contributed to "Life In These United States"

THE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT was fighting the blaze engulfing my cousin's barn. As he watched, he dialed his insurance company on his portable phone, but there was no answer. "How come my agent is never there when I need him?" he asked in frustration. One of the firefighters tapped him on the shoulder. "That's because I'm right here, putting out the fire," responded the agent. --Contributed to "Life In These United States" by Julia Campbell

AND A WORD FROM YOURS TRULY

And a good evening to y'all!  Had a wee bit of a scare a few minutes ago!  My keyboard locked up and I thought I was dead in the water.  I called my computer guru who proceeded to help me with the situation!  I lost a few things, I am sure, on this issue ... but apparently nothing too important as I don't miss them!  I had, luckily, saved it in the 'drafts' several hours before!  Good thing to do that occasionally!
Several things ... I have published most of your installations ... or the ones that you have been kind enough to send me.  I now have favors to ask of you.  When you elect your WM & WP, please let me know so I can put that in along side your installation date.  ALSO!  If your Chapter is installing a new Secretary, would you please let me know that, too, along with their address so I can publish that, too?  It makes life a lot easier if we know who to send mail to ... in case we have Honor Night invites we wish to share with the different chapters.  Thanks heaps!
And one more thing!  I am fixing to send in some memorials to the WGM/WGP Special Project of Cancer Research/Multiple Sclerosis.  In looking at the Blue Book ... I see that the monies need to go to Roy & Mary Sharp at 17693 Road 5 NW, #54, Quincy, WA 98848.  I found out something, too.  That when we do send in monies for these projects, we need to say on the check or letter that the monies are destined to CANCER RESEARCH or MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS RESEARCHIf we do NOT specify RESEARCH, it goes just into a Cancer Fund and our WGM/WGP gets no credit!  So ... let's give credit where credit is due!  REMEMBER to put RESEARCH on your paperwork
The best thing about spring is that it comes when it is most needed!  Ya shur!  I read this little ditty yesterday and thought I would insert it into the newsletter somewhere so here it is!  And here we are ... under a winter storm warning for 3-5" of snow in the valleys (that's us!) beginning at 4 AM tomorrow and lasting thru 10 PM tomorrow evening!  Ought to make life interesting going into the Chapter meeting tomorrow evening!  Always something exciting going on around here, huh!  I didn't notice the little birds doing much frantic feeding today which is a sure sign of a storm approaching ... but in front of our house in the river must be a zillion little ducks!  I have no idea why they are congregating here, but we do enjoy watching them flittering hither and yon!  The snow is finally gone around the base of the trees ... so we have been having deer coming in at night and grazing!  They keep the lawn trimmed as they fertilize, I noticed!  Heck of a deal!
Until next time ... Hearty Patriot Hugs and happy thoughts.
