STARS OF WASHINGTON
March 14th, 2007
#7-013
My thoughts are as glad as the morning
My heart is as light as the dew
With this ring, I remember the passion
And I can think only of you
Your gift of those bright happy hours
Stay with me through each night and day
With hands joined forever and ever
More than mere words can ever convey
Together we stand in a rainbow
And glow with the colours of love
Forever, we will be together
Held in the bond of our love ...
Anne Agnew
Claddagh the Irish
symbol of love, the Claddagh ring, Claddagh
Claddagh
Unlike the other Irish symbols, the Claddagh is not an ancient Celtic
design but a 16th century Irish symbol of eternal love and friendship. The
heart at the center of the design is symbolic of love, the hands around it
symbolize friendship, while the crown represents everlasting loyalty. The
Claddagh ring was developed by Richard Joyce, native of
Galway. While being transported
to the plantations of the Moorish West Indies as a slave, he was captured by
pirates in the
Mediterranean and trained in his
craft by a goldsmith who bought him. He was set free In 1689 and he returned
to
Galway to set up shop in the
Claddagh to make Claddagh rings. (The oldest fishing village in
Ireland). Traditionally
handed down from mother to daughter the Royal Claddagh ring has also become
a symbol of ties with the past and generations gone by. As Irish people we
remember the many many of our people who had to leave Ireland with nothing
but their lives during the Great Famine of the 19th Century - many leaving
from Cork harbor to make the long voyage across the Atlantic to America. The
gold Royal Claddagh ring was to become for many the only enduring link with
their home country and practically their only savings and family
inheritance. Today, the Claddagh ring is worn throughout
Ireland,
and this is the way it's supposed to be done.
1--On the right hand, crown in heart out, the wearer is free as the birds in
the sky. If you want her, go a courtin'.
2--On the right hand, crown out heart in, the lass is spoken for, so lay
off.
3--The best of place is on the left hand, heart in crown out, she is happily
married for evermore.
Spiritual Meaning
The Crown to The Father, The Left hand to the Son, and the Right Hand to
the Holy Ghost. This explanation is directly correlated to the Shamrock, one
of the earliest symbols of the Holy Trinity among the Irish.
PASSING OF MONTANA'S WGP
It is with a heavy heart that I bring you the sad news that WGP Neil
passed away this morning, Tuesday, March 6th.
Neil was hospitalized last Thursday. By Saturday, it was determined
that the cancer was very aggressive and had grown, even with the
chemotherapy treatments. Plans were being made for hospice to attend to
Neil when he was able to return home. However, on Monday, Neil took a
turn for the worse and he has passed to the Grand Chapter on High.
As soon as plans have been made, I will let you know about the
service.
On behalf of Neil’s family and myself, thank you for all your cards,
calls and prayers.
In Star Love & (of course) those IRISH HUGS
---Jeanine Cole, WGM
The funeral service for Montana's WGP Neil McGill has been set for
11:00 AM Friday, March 9th at the First Presbyterian Church in Missoula,
201 S 5 West. There will be a reception following the service at the
church hosted by Electa Chapter #7. There will be no internment that
day. Neil will be buried on Saturday in Manhattan with a Masonic
Graveside Service.

His wife, Penny, is Montana's Grand Esther.

Decorations for Grand Chapter needed and answers ...
From the
Decorations Committee for Grand Chapter:
WOW - Thanks for all the emails asking questions about the flag wall
hanging for Grand Chapter.
The website listed in the instructions is not complete however. It
should read -
www.usflag.org That
should help. Many of you have great ideas to help WGM Joanne achieve her
dream of having a history of US flags hanging around the Grand Chapter room
to go with the heritage theme. Remember, this was not to be costly, create
a headache, or make extra work for anyone. Your local quilt shop has
patterns for just this type of project. On line at
www.nancysnotions.com you will find more ideas including a kit to make a
17x27 flag.
We just want people to have fun with this and use your creativity and
imagination! it is strictly up to each chapter whether or not they want to
take this on. We can't wait to see the results!
Also, we are looking for large penguins, igloos, standing Uncle Sam's
made of metal, hay bales, tumbleweed, a covered wagon, fir trees, red silk
geraniums in pots, stuffed moose, stuffed grizzly bear, other stuffed wild
animals, Southern plantation items, fake magnolia trees, eagles, and
patriotic items. Please e-mail me at
netstar54@aol.com with
what you have that we could use. Thanks for your assistance and involvement
in making this a Grand Chapter you will not want to miss!!!!

Dealing with death ...
My condolences to the Grand Chapter and Sisters and Brothers on the
passing of their Grand Chaplain, Ruth Douglas during an Official Visit of
the Worthy Grand Matron. What a shock that would be for this to happen at an
Official Visit.
Montana had a similar experience in December 2005 at an Official Visit
of the Worthy Grand Matron to the chapter in Butte. Star Point "Martha"
hadn't been feeling well, so was permitted to remain seated during her
initiation lecture. She was on the last sentence of the lecture, before the
sign, when her head went back and she was "gone". CPR was administered until
the ambulance and first responders got there, but they were unable to revive
her.
This was sad, but touching, that she departed during this particular
initiation lecture. It really emphasizes the message of the lecture.

Just a note of thanks to all of you for the cards and phone calls. It
really gives you a boost when you know so many care and take the time to

Great
news ...
If I told
you already, please consider the source. Brandon, our 21 year old
son, not only made the Dean's List at Seattle University for fall quarter
but was asked by Prof. Tomas Guillen, School of Journalism, to contact a
person at the Seattle P.I. to be an intern. The man from the P.I.
returned Brandon's email and asked for Brandon's resume. After the resume
was received by the P.I. contact, Brandon was informed that he would be an
unpaid intern at the end of this month! He will receive 10 college
credits for his internship. Brandon has been an unpaid intern (and
published) at the Seattle Weekly's "The Stranger" and wrote for Belllevue
C.C.'s "Jibsheet."
We are most grateful to the Order of Eastern Star, the Scottish Rite
Foundation, and Seattle University for supporting Brandon in his college
education through their scholarships. Brandon has finished his major in
Political Science and is now working on his minor of Journalism. Finals
are this week, so we do not have his grades yet.

Rada Uphus Chapter #208 O.E.S. news ..
Tuesday evening March 6th The members of Rada Uphus overwhelmingly
elected a new slate of Officers for the 2007 - 2008 Star Year. Elected
Officers are Vera Stritzel, Worthy Matron; Richard 'Whitey' White, Worthy
Patron; Linda Tunstall, Associate Matron; Howard Ballou, Associate Patron;
Mary Lindall Conductress, and Dorothy `Dottie¹ DiGiulio, Associate
Conductress. Also elected were Hank Radtke as the returning Treasurer,
and Carolyn Enloe as Secretary.
At the second meeting in February Evelyn 'Evie' Jones was chosen as
Member of the year. Too all may I extend my congratulations on behalf of
the membership and to all the Newly Elected Officers may next year be more
successful than this past year. May we grow new members through our
community activities and relationship with the Masonic Family of Bothell
Washington and the surrounding neighbors.
To our Worthy Matron Jean and her Patron 'Bill' thank you for a
wonderful year with many meetings being casual and this change in and of
itself very refreshing. It was a welcomed change to limit the formalities
to special occasions. The refreshments following the meetings seemed to
pass by with unseen speed. Though most meetings were over by 9:00 PM
there were many nights, that when all was said and done and the
socialization's would come to a close that the hour would be approaching
mid-night. It was great to see all have such a good time in each others
company. To me though only a member of Star for 12 years it was great to
see members of the Masonic Family returning to what I believe our
fraternity is all about and that is sharing and caring about our fellow
member. To the new officers let's keep up this new found life and continue
to share experiences and friendships with members of like minds.
To any who wish to visit, our new slate of Officers took office on
March 24th, all are welcomed to join us here at Rada Uphus for evenings
filled with fun and unknown adventures. Worthy Matron Vera, may you and
your officers have a more successful year than last (if this is even
possible) and knowing the theme let's have fun and make others jealous of
the good times and fun we as a chapter will be having during your term.
With the installation of Officers being held on March 24th look for
pictures and highlights of the upcoming term in the next issue of the
Monitor. Also listed will be any special events our new Worthy Matron
will be having so look hard, mark your calendar, and plan to visit.
Fraternally,
** Vincent DiGiulio, PP

What is a podcast?
A podcast is like a radio show on the computer. Commonly they are MP3
files that can be downloaded and listened to just like music and songs.
You can subscribe to services that let you know when new podcasts are
available. IPODS or other MP3 players can play them as well as almost any
media program on your computer. There are a number of directories that
list available podcasts. Just do a simple search for podcasts and you will
find a bunch.

Worthwhile Fund Raiser ....
I'm dinging everyone in my address book who I know at least likes dogs
JUST to get the word out about the coolest place ever for old dogs! See
News Article Below. Thanks for your time and pass this on if you know

4-H Dog Group teams up with local BMW Race Team to raise funds for
www.olddoghaven.org.
Washington State 4-H Group Auburn Valley Tailwagger’s and RTG
Motorsports are combining forces to raise funds for ‘The Old Dog Haven’.
All donations will go to the aid of dogs who can no longer be cared for by
their owners due to a death or the aging needs of the dog and owner. An
amount of $25 can feed and house a dog for three months.
On March 17th RTG Motorsports will try to better their 3rd place
finish at last year’s annual 8 Hour Enduro. The team's average lap time
was 1:20 and we
completed 336 laps. We hope to achieve ’Top Dog’ status at this years
race! With our Euro M3 BMW, seasoned Grand AM pit crew, and the 'old dogs'
driving, we
still have a few tricks up our sleeves!
Auburn Valley Tailwagger's will be collecting pledges on a per lap or
flat fee basis. Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far! All
expenses are
being covered by the owner of the team and 100% of all donations go
directly to Old Dog Haven. Every dollar counts! If you would like to
help, contributions
can be made to: 'Old Dog Haven' and mailed : C/O RTG/AVT Fundraiser, 813

NEW COINS ..
Remember the article regarding the new
dollars? I received many emails regarding the subject! Here are a few of
the responses.
Connie,
This report is wrong! I have one of the new dollars and "In God We
Trust" is printed on it. It is there! It's just not where you're
accustomed to seeing it. Remember the ridges on the edge of the coins?
This new dollar doesn't have ridges. Around the smooth edge where the
ridges used to be is where "In God We Trust" is printed.
** Martha Hendrickson (Montana)

Hi Connie,
Just thought I would comment on the new Dollar Coin and the lack of
"In God We Trust". I went to the bank today and asked to see one, I could
not find the words on either side, but the Teller pointed out to us the
words inscribed on the edge of the coin. "In God We Trust" and also "E
Pluribus Unum" are etched in the edge of the coin, so you know that they
have to be very small and inconspicuous to get all that on the
edge. That's the first I ever knew of anything but ridges on the edge of
a coin, but I guess that is the only way they can include it so no one
will really notice it.
** Carmen Ivey
- - - - - - - - - -
I read in your last Stars
of Washington that some think the phrase "In God We Trust" is not on the
new Presidential dollar coins. My dad is a collector of coins so I bought
some for him and have seen "In God We Trust" printed on the EDGE of the
coins. Also imprinted on the edge is "E Pluribus Unum" and the year and
mint mark (D or P). So be sure to look at the edges of these new dollar
coins. "In God We Trust" is there!
** Nancy Pratt, Grand Representative of Washington in Indiana
P.S. I have been receiving Stars of Washington for several months now and
am enjoying it. I look forward to meeting some of you when I attend part
of your Grand Chapter session this summer.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
After reading the stars of Washington
Newsletter, I decided that I would check the US Mint to see if they had
anything on there about the new Presidential $1 Coins. It does say 'In
God We Trust" It is on the outside edge of the coin. Here is the link to
open the US Mint webpage where you will see a picture of it. I just
thought you would like to know! I am much happier now, knowing that they
didn't remove it!

THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW YOUR CELL PHONE COULD DO.
There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies.
Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool
for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it:
FIRST
Subject: Emergency
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112.
If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network
and there is an emergency, dial 112 the mobile will search any existing
network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this
number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.
SECOND
Subject: Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy
someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car
and the
spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your
cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have
the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile
phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to
drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of
miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your
car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk). Editor's Note: It works fine!
THIRD
Subject: Hidden Battery Power imagine your cell battery is very low.
To activate, press the keys *3370# Your cell will restart with this
reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This
reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time.
FOURTH
How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits
on your phone: * # 0 6 #
A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your
handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get
stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They
will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM
card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone
back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either.
If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile
phones. And Finally I have made note of my phone's serial number.
FIFTH
Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411
information calls when they don't have to. Most of us do not carry a
telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more of
a problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial:
(800) FREE 411, or (800) 373-3411 without incurring any charge at all.
Program this into your cell phone now.
This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving, so pass it
on to your family and friends

WASHINGTON STATE GRAND CHAPTER HISTORY AS COPIED FROM THE 43RD
TRIENNIAL SOUVENIR BOOK
In his book "The History of the Order of the Eastern Star", Brother
Willis D. Engle reported that in December 1869 Brother Robert Macoy, on
behalf of
the Supreme Grand Chapter, issued a charter for a Chapter in Vancouver,
Washington--however, there is no record of such a Chapter functioning in
Washington.
Evergreen #1 at Goldendale was the first Chapter in Washington Territory
under the authority of the General Grand Chapter; and was organized on
November 12, 1881. After that, seven other Chapters were chartered.
Rainbow #2 at Dayton, Chehalis #3 at Chehalis, Washington #4 at Colfax,
Silver Spray #5 at Cheney, Lorraine #6 at Seattle, Fern #7 at Tacoma, and
Henrietta #8 at Sprague. In 1888 these chapters had a combined membership
of 367.
The call for a convention to organize a Grand Chapter in Washington was
issued by Fern Chapter #7 on March 9,1888. The convention was held at Port
Townsend on June 11, 1888, during the annual session of the Grand Lodge of
Washington F. & A. M., with all eight chapters represented by a total of 23
delegates. The Constitution and By-Laws of the Grand Chapter of Iowa, with
some amendments was adopted. Members of the Grand Chapter were Past Patrons
and Past Matrons, and the Grand Patron was its executive head. In 1890 the
executive powers were given to the Grand Matron.
As a result of paperwork problems, recognition of the Grand Chapter of
Washington by the General Grand Chapter was delayed until March 26, 1889,
and then for some reason, the Charter for the new Grand Chapter was not
issued for 53 years. In 1942 General Grand Chapter became aware of this
omission, and W.M.G.M. Effie Eastton deputized P.M.W.G.M.Emma P. Chadwick to
present the Charter to Washington.
In the early years, the Order experienced bitter opposition from some
Masons, however many prominent Masonic brothers joined and became active in
the new organization. The first four Grand Patrons were, or later became
Grand Masters of Masons of Washington. Over the years, eleven other Past
Grand Patrons also served as Grand Masters. The active participation of
these and many other prominent Masons, together with the assistance and
financial support rendered by the Eastern Star in establishing the Masonic
Home of Washington served to negate the unfounded bias of the Masonic
fraternity concerning our Order.
From the beginning, Washington's Grand Chapter enjoyed the privileges
and benefits of participating, with the other Grand Chapters, in the
exchange of
Grand Representatives. However, in 1896, following similar action by "The
Masonic Grand Bodies" in Washington, a resolution was adopted to abandon the
Eastern Star Grand Representative system, and it was not until 1907 that
Washington rescinded this action and again began participating in the Grand
Representative system.
In the late 1800's and early 1900's the Grand Chapter of Washington's
relations with the General Grand Chapter were not always the best. In those
years Washington, along with some other Grand Chapters while recognizing
that the G.G.C. had authority over the Ritual, believed that each Grand
Chapter had supreme and exclusive jurisdiction within their own boundaries,
over all other matters pertaining to the Order of the Eastern Star, and
strongly felt that the G.G.C. had no authority to levy taxes or dues upon
the individual Grand Chapters. The dispute reached its peak in 1902 when
Washington declared itself an independent Grand Chapter and not a
constituent of the G.G.C.. It operated as such until 1906, when through the
efforts of P.G.M. Emma P. Chadwick and others, it rescinded its former
action and rejoined the General Grand Chapter.
In 1952 plans were begun to construct and operate a nursing home to
provide "nursing care at reasonable rates for Eastern Star members not
eligible for
admission to the Masonic Home". After much work by many dedicated members,
the "Emma P. Chadwick Memorial Home" was opened in August 1964, on an eight
acre site near Bothell donated by Sister Hanna Gillette. In 1985 the name
was changed to the " Eastern Star Nursing Home". A second nursing home was
opened in Yakima in 1989, but repairs and construction costs required by
State Certification put a financial strain on both Homes resulting in their
sale in 1993. The money realized from the sale was placed in the "Eastern
Star Charities fund of Washington".
In its 111 year history, Washington is proud to have been honored by
having two of its Past Grand Matrons also serve as Most Worthy Grand Matrons
of the
General Grand Chapter; Sister Emma P. Chadwick, Worthy Grand Matron in 1899,
who served as M.W.G.M. in 1928-1931, and Sister Carol Strizek, Worthy Grand
Matron in 1956, who served as M.W.G.M. in 1982-1985. Both of these
distinguished Sisters, by their actions, brought esteem and honor to our
beautiful order.

Little Chapter Order of Demolay news ...
First to Gene and Connie can we get this info into the
Masonic Press for all to see. To Andy Here is the information on some of
the activities going on at the Masonic Center in Bothell.
Brethren and Friends,
On Wednesday Evening February 28th TH. Little Chapter Order of DeMolay
initiated 3 new members this brings to 13 the active members of the Chapter
here in Bothell. This was the most important part of the program as the
chapter was assisted by the State Core and Demolay Members and Adults
traveled some distance to assist. Remember the Snow Storm and terrible road
conditions that evening.
There was also a unique presentation that night as one of the Original
Dad Advisors to the Demolay was Present. Murray was the Dad Advisor (57
years ago) of the 1st Dad Advisor for TH. Little and he too was present.
The 1st Master Counselor, John, of TH. Little was present also. These 3
VWB and WB Brother Masons all spoke on what DeMolay was like several years
ago and how it was founded to present young men a place to go for the father
figure as many of the adults were serving in the Armed Forces fighting for
our Country's beliefs. Brethren today we are once again in a state of
international turmoil and many of today'ss Children have relatives serving
in the defense of our countries principals. So please if you know of a
young man between the ages of 12 and 20 who is in need of an adult figure in
his life contact one of the local DeMolay Chapters and look into what they
have to offer.
DeMolay presents these young men with the opportunity to speak in public,
develop a term or business plan, and vote on financial needs and expenses.
These are the working parts of the program. Also the young members have
the opportunity to travel to state, national and international conventions,
socialize with members of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, and
Job's Daughters International. They plan fun events such as inner tubing,
camping, hiking, sporting competition, dances, and other activities which
are of interest to the youth of today. The adults who assist are there as
Advisors and it is up to the boys themselves to make the plans and initiate
the programs they choose by a vote of the membership. the Master Counselor
or CEO creates a plan for his term, presents in to both the boys and
Advisors for approval. It is then his duty to form teams to see it
successfully implemented. This may seem like a lot of work but today'ss
children if given a chance are completely capable of instituting this type
of program.
For those that don't know the names of some of the former DeMolay members
think about Walt Disney, John Wayne, several Presidents, may of today's
Astronauts all who most likely had their start in leadership as a member of
the International Order of DeMolay.

Fellowship Chapter #61, RAM news ...
Tuesday evening March 13th Fellowship Chapter #61 had it regular stated
Communication. This event was very special as we as Royal Arch Masons had
the honor of being presented a Musical Recital by one of the young ladies we
have assisted in gaining sponsorship through the Royal Arch Masons Children
Heart Foundation. Natalie a very mature young lady for her age (8) wanted
to thank the Royal Arch Masons and the Masonic Family for their help.
Natalie has had several heart operations during her young life. This
last operation was to be preformed in at the Boston Children Hospital and
the Masons of Washington especially t
