"Why God Gave Us Friends"

God Knew That Everyone Needs
Companionship And Cheer,
He Knew That People Need Someone
Whose Thoughts Are Always Near.

He Knew They Need Someone Kind
To Lend A Helping Hand.
Someone To Gladly Take The Time
To Care And Understand.

God Knew That We All Need Someone
To Share Each Happy Day,
To Be A Source Of Courage
When Troubles Come Our Way.

Someone To Be True To Us,
Whether Near Or Far Apart.
Someone Whose Love We'll Always
Hold And Treasure In Our Hearts

MESSAGES FROM OUR WORTHY GRAND MATRONS

Several messages have come in from our WGM ... some old ... some new!  Our computer/server/etc/ went down for 24 hours and boy howdy!  When you are busy and the messages are coming in ... computers can be a pain.  But when they are not working, you REALLY miss them!  So ... here goes!

Cancellation ... November 29th .....
Happy snow days are becoming a pain as I have cancelled the OV at Maple Leaf Chapter in Bellingham on the advise of the Worthy Matron Shawn and several friends from the area as well as well as talking to the  WGM Kim Ball from BC. We all decided it wasn't worth people having  problems trying to get to a meeting in this weather and we will reschedule it at a later date. I hope this is the last time I have to inform anyone about cancellations.
Thanks,
** Joanne Clark, WGM

Cancellation ... November 27 ... (old news ...)
Hope you are all staying warm and toasty in this beautiful mess. Just a note to let you know that we are canceling Faith Chapter tonight and I  think Bellingham looks very questionable at this time. I will let you know tomorrow on that. The snow isn't bad here but the ice has been bad on the roads at night and I don't want anyone to get hurt so we will have to make up whatever gets canceled later.

REMEMBERING "OUR" MOST WORTHY GRAND MATRON, SISTER CAROL STRIZEK

She served as the MWGM in 1982-1985.  The 78th Triennial Assembly was held in Seattle, Wash. on Oct. 28-31, 1985.  She had appointed P.G.M. Sister Florence Morris as our W.G. Chaplain.  I recall what a thrill it was to have them attend our Chapters during their busy years.

The following item is taken from the 1997-2000 Triennial Souvenir Book:

"The Theme for this 38th Triennial Assembly was "The World of Friendship and Light".  The Most Worthy Grand Matron reported that the institution of the Grand Chapter of Australia took place in June 1985, which is the first such event since 1904 when the Grand Chapter of Scotland was similarly instituted.

Subordinate Chapters-----------------------------------11,509
Grand Chapters---------------------------------------1,685,193

Total Membership in General Grand Chapter ------1.696.702
Scotland------------------------------------------------450,000
New York (1977) ----------------------------------------81,657
New Jersey (Apr 1978) ---------------------------------35,718
Total Eastern Star Membership---------------------2,264,077

Contributions for the Triennium toward our welfare funds and Peace Garden totaled  $6,093,616, with more than $500,000 raised for the Knights Templar Eye Foundation, the special project of our Most Worthy Grand Matron and the Most Worthy Grand Patron for the 1983-1985 Triennium."

Sadness in Ontario ...
It is with much sadness that the members in Ontario report the passing of Peter Christie, PGP. Peter served as WGP in 1999 - 2000 with Sister Betty Romenick as his WGM. Peter lost his battle with cancer on November 24, 2006. For anyone who attended General Grand Chapter this year, Peter was the wonderful gentle man who was on the Necrology Committee and took part in that very moving service, all the while battling his own enemy. Peter was a humble man in thought and deed and will sorely be missed by the members in Ontario. Our sympathy is extended to his loving wife of almost 50 years Betty and their children.

Wonderful Website ...
    A Parents  Wish
For those of us who have aging parents or for those of us who are parents who are aging ourselves, this is a wonderful presentation.  Be sure to have your sound turned up (and no, nothing will jump out and scare you - I  promise!).  The music behind the presentation is Josh Groban's "You  Raise Me Up", which, if you have never heard the song before - it is  absolutely beautiful!  Anyway, take a  moment to enjoy.

Update on PGM Virginia Hagen -
How wonderful it is to be in the Eastern Star family.  With the help of all your prayers the doctors came out of surgery and said the operation was a lot less difficult then they had thought it might have been from the diagnosis and Virginia is doing fine.  She will be in the hospital until Monday or Tuesday and then will remain in Billings until she is ready to travel.  The primary tests showed borderline cancer, so we are now waiting for further test results to come back to see if it is borderline or more or possibly less.  So, we still need all your prayers.
We would like to thank all those who have already sent cards and best wishes.  It is truly amazing how many she has received and how quickly.  We love you all.

Cool thing to do ...
Here's something cool that Xerox is doing  -- If you go to this website, www.letssaythanks.com  You can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it, and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq. You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services. How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!! This is a great site.  Please send a card. It is FREE and it only takes a second. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these? Whether you are for or against the war, our guys and gals over there need to know we are behind them.

FRAUDULENT SPAM E-MAIL CLAIMING TO BE FROM FBI DIRECTOR MUELLER

We have become aware of a bogus spam e-mail claiming to be from FBI Director Robert Mueller III. This scam appears to be a typical Nigerian scam; however, the attempt to defraud victims comes in two separate e-mails. The same e-mail address is used to deliver both phases of the spam.

The first e-mail claims to be from FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III. It advises recipients that they are the beneficiary of a large sum of money and that they can claim the money by providing an FBI Identification Record and a Certificate of Ownership. To make the message look more legitimate, information is pasted in the e-mail from the FBI.gov web site defining what an Identification Record is and how to obtain it from the Criminal Justice Information Services Division.

The second e-mail claims to be from Donna M. Uzzell, FBI Compact Council Chairman. The message informs the recipient the Certificate of Ownership is supplied, for a fee, by the country where the funds originated. It requires the recipient to respond to the e-mail for instructions on sending the money to FBI Nigeria, which then will issue the certificate.

At this point the message becomes more threatening, stating the FBI has investigative programs which can track down those who fail to provide the requested documentation. It further states failure to comply will result in charges being brought against the individual by the FBI.

THIS EMAIL IS A HOAX. DO NOT RESPOND.

Some great advice ...
According the comic strip 'B. C.' ... Never go to an ophthalmologist who sells white canes!

I've had it ...

Circle round to the side of the bed,

Grab the tissue and Sudafed.

Back to the middle and don't goof off;

Hold your stomach and cough, cough, cough.

Forget about slippers, dash down the hall,

Pass your cookies in the shower stall.

Remember others on the brink,

Wash your hands, wash the sink.

Wipe the doorknobs, light switch too,

By George, you've got it,

You're doing the Flu!

P.S. Some like it cold, some like it hot;

If you like neither; get a flu shot.

MINUTE MAN AWARDS

WGM Joanne Clark is honoring the Masons at the Official Visits this year.  She is selecting a Mason from a list given to her form the Worthy Matrons of each Chapter.  They will be called the "Minuteman" to go along with her patriotic theme. To qualify for the award, the Mason must be a 10 year member of Eastern Star, have served as Worthy Patron in the Chapter, and been active in the Chapter.  The pins are beautiful and were purchased from Dave Hattrick of ID, now residing for a spell in AZ.
So let's give these outstanding Masons some credit for all their work they do for our beautiful Order!  I will need some help here so please let me know who has been given this award in your Chapter during the Official Visit.
(For July, August, September and October ... please check in the archives on Connie's Corner on the GC of WA's website ... www.washingtonoes.org.  - the last list published in its entirety was in issue #6-052.)

Birds of a Feather
A winged messenger reminds a woman that 'who you are makes a difference.'
By Abbe Graber

One morning as I was sitting outside enjoying my morning coffee, I noticed a pigeon pecking at the ground on the road in front of my home. It made me think about how our rural area was becoming more and more populated by folks from New York City, and now even the pigeons were moving in.

After a few minutes of watching the bird, I got up and went back inside the house to refill my coffee cup. With coffee in hand, I sat down on my bench and noticed a feather lying on the ground between my feet.

I leaned over to pick it up thinking how nice that the pigeon had left me a souvenir. But as I looked up again, what I saw brought me to my feet.

Hundreds of feathers now covered my lawn and driveway. The beautiful pigeon had stepped out into the road while I was inside refilling my coffee and now it lay dead before my eyes—most likely hit by a car. I stood there devastated by what had just happened.

Then I looked down at the creature, with its iridescent neck, plump body, and pink feet, and noticed an identification ringlet around its ankle.

I ran inside to get a pen and paper to write down the information. I called several government agencies to inform them of what had happened, but to my dismay none of them was interested in my pigeon, and, in fact, could not care less—especially now that the bird was dead.

In tears, I went back inside to get a shovel so I could carry the precious bird into the woods where I would bury it. My grief opened up deep feelings about how this pigeon's life reflected my own. I had been hurt at work, needed major surgery, and would never be able to go back to my job again. I had become just another casualty in the line of duty.

I decided that this poor animal was going to be buried with dignity, and so I went to find some meaningful trinket that I could bury along with the pigeon.

After several minutes of searching, I spotted a little green ribbon on which was printed in gold letters, "Who you are makes a difference." It had been given to me by a group leader at the prison where I used to work, where I was involved in a special program that encouraged the inmates to become more accountable for their actions, past and present, and helped motivate them toward more productive lives.

Upon returning to the woods with the ribbon in hand, I was shocked to find the pigeon gone. Apparently the local feral cat had taken it underneath the old shed while I was in the house.

There I stood, tears falling from my eyes, no bird to bury, a green ribbon in my hand. But the words on the ribbon stood out to me as never before: "Who you are makes a difference." It made me feel like God intended this message for me.
