THE STARS OF WASHINGTON

October 29th, 2006

Say goodbye to daylight-saving time this weekend. (Oct 29th 2006 )

The days are growing shorter...
The leaves are falling too...
The sun sinks early in the sky...
Until it is no longer, blue...

The clock is quickly ticking...
It is that time of year...
When we need to be reminded...
The time to turn our clocks is here...

We move an hour of daylight…
To the morning from the night…
If you forget to do it…
It could be a terrible fright…

Turn them back, not forward...
And if you do it right...
You will be able to enjoy...
An extra hour of sleep tonight... Jeannie Nourse

OES CHAPTERS CALENDAR

Sadness in New Brunswick
It is with sadness that I advise you of the passing of Sister Joan Hicks, PGM, of New Brunswick. Sister Joan was the sweetest gal and succumbed to dreaded cancer recently. Her OES service will be (was) on Tuesday, October 24 in Moncton, NB.
My deepest sympathy goes out to her family some of whom I know personally and to the Grand Chapter of NB. She will be sorely missed. A true Star, lovely lady and all-round delightful person.

Alderwood Chapter New Member ...
On October 5 Alderwood Chapter was pleased to have a surprise initiation.  Jeremie Royal, son of Valerie and Steve Morgan and grandson of Millie and Doug Searles, was initiated into Alderwood Chapter by dispensation from the Worthy Grand Matron.  Jeremie was home on leave from serving in Iraq and expressed wishes to join the chapter. He also is a Master Mason and a member of Doric Lodge.  The officers did a wonderful job of ritual with only one day notice and no practice.
Under good of the order Jeremie presented the chapter a flag that had flown on an apache helicopter as it protected the border of Iraq and Syria.  He also presented a flag to his parents.  The chapter along with Welcome Court and Robert Burns Lodge chaired by Valerie Morgan have been sending packages to the men through Jeremy for two years and this was a way those men said thank you to us.  At refreshment Jeremie showed us pictures he had taken in Iraq and explained them to those present.  We are proud to have Jeremie a member of our chapter.

Evergreen Chapter News ...
Dear Connie,
Was wondering if you could add the following to your next Stars?
Evergreen Chapter #1 will be having our annual Turkey dinner, Sunday, November 5 from Noon to 3 p.m.  The cost will be $7.50 for adults and $3.50 for children 12 and under.  The menu includes roast turkey, stuffing, green beans, real mashed potatoes, turkey gravy, cranberry sauce, rolls and homemade fruit pie.  Also, since this will be a celebration of our 125 birthday, we will have cake for those who wish it.  It will be a party atmosphere and our members would love to have all who can, come and help us celebrate.  Why not stop down our way, enjoy a nice dinner and help us celebrate our wonderful birthday.

Eastern Star Journal
The following e-mail message was forwarded to me and I thought it was interesting that the writer, a past grand patron from Virginia, is not on the Eastern Star Journal Committee of General Grand Chapter. He's apparently just a very satisfied reader who wants his jurisdiction's members to be informed, and to know what he thinks will get them that way.
** Les Bailey, PGP, General Grand Chapter Committee Member - Eastern Star Journal, Centennial #58, Colorado Springs

Hello Everyone:
I am sending you a subscription form to The Eastern Star Journal--a booklet of Eastern Star activities around the world. The booklet is full of interesting articles concerning just about anything you can think of in Eastern Star and more.
This issue is fantastic and fabulous. Did you know that Virginia is 24th in the subscription percentage standings, out of 56?
How can you build an interest in your chapter?... are you looking for Ways and Means? Do you know about the Endowment Fund of the GGC? If not, why not find out about it and use it as a program for your chapter. In this issue there are tremendous trips to overseas and are brought to you in vivid details. It is a great Show and Tell considering all States and Jurisdictions... and what the local chapters are doing in those States and foreign countries. There are articles - examples of how you can interact with your local Masonic Lodges for Fund Raising.
I hope you subscribe ... There are a lot of Eastern Stars in Virginia that do not know of this magazine. The subscription for one year is just $12.00. The one book-issue is worth that!!!
Every Eastern Star member should have this magazine to stay abreast of what is going on. Do you have new members? This is a way of informing them of "Page Two" (the rest of the story), as Paul Harvey would say.
Stay informed.
Frats,
** jr
[Note:  There is an online subscription form on the General Grand Chapter website http://www.easternstar.org ]

Conference ...
To all my lady friends,
I just got back from Portland where I attended the Women of Faith Conference.  It was WONDERFUL!!!  The dates for next year in Portland are Friday, Oct. 12th and Saturday, the 13th.  Our Group Leader has made 25 reservations which gives us a $30.00 discount on the conference.  And we have found a motel one block from the Arena for $79.00 per night.  So, I am inviting you to come with me next year for an awesome women's event.
The speakers are great - telling stories of their life while working in the pertinent scripture passages for them.  The music from the musical guests is, what else, heavenly.  Plus adding some 15,000 women's voices to familiar tunes is something you won't want to miss.
So ladies, if you are even remotely interested in going, let me know and your name will go on the list.  And be sure to put it on your calendar now so you won't schedule anything else on that weekend.  The conference begins on Friday night at 7 p.m. and ends promptly at 5 p.m. on Saturday.  There is a pre-conference on Friday morning from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., which features just one of the main speakers and a guest.  That's just a quick outline of what happens.  Like I said, if you are interested let me know...Toodles...

News from Oz ...
Well, the last month has been quite exciting for me here in Oz.  Not only did I receive my permanent residency (the Australian government took 3 years to decide that I can live with my husband Marty - but at least they said YES!), but last night I was made Worthy Matron-elect of Mizpah #12.
When you consider that I have only been IN Australia a bit over 2 years, it is quite an extraordinary set of circumstances.  Remember I spent the first 6 months in Darwin - where unfortunately no OES chapters exist yet.  I arrived in Brisbane in late October 2004.  I was admitted to Mizpah #12 around February 2005.  In April 2005, the Associate Conductress moved overseas, and they needed someone to fill the chair (sound familiar? <G>).  Mizpah Chapter year ends in October,
so November 2005 I was installed as Conductress and that year is coming to a close.  Our Associate Matron has had some extreme family issues, and declined to move on - so on November 4th, I will be installed as WM of Mizpah #12.  Similar to Laurel #47 - where my previous term as WM relied on chapter members, this will be no different.  Finally another use for that gavel my previous Worthy Patron (Don Schwartz) created for our year...when I find it after all those moves!
This is truly what this order is all about - helping others, and getting involved.  We at Mizpah happen to have a new member who joined last month.  She sat on the sidelines, and it was easy to see that she didn't quite know what was going on - but at least she was there and willing to learn.  I saw most of the chapter members (even some chapter visitors!) go up to her and make her feel welcome prior to the meeting start.  I am sure that we will have a future ACTIVE chapter member there.  Can all chapters say that about their new members?
In any case, my invitation to Washington State OES members to my installation in 2007 appears to be moved up a tad.  Should you still wish to visit - come any time!  But in November 2007, I have a feeling I will be stepping down, instead of up...but I know I will have all of Mizpah behind me, and no doubt best wishes from Laurel #47 as well.
What a great order we belong to!
** Linda A. Lorentz Fletcher, WM-elect Mizpah #12, South Brisbane District Grand Chapter, Grand Chapter of Queensland, United Grand Chapter of Australia
Past Matron, Laurel #47, Grand Chapter of Washington, General Grand Chapter

Anyone have a camper???
Hi Connie,
Here is the information that I said I would send you when we were talking at the reception on Saturday. I am looking for a camper that will fit on a 1/2 ton pickup and would consider trading my 19 ft fifth wheel trailer for one. We would be using the camper to go to more Star meeting than we feel like pulling the 5th wheel to. If you could put something about this in the newsletter I would sure appreciate it as I would much rather deal with Star brothers or sisters than someone else. I can be reached at (509) 633-2164 or at couleecowboy@couleedam.net

MINUTE MAN AWARDS

WGM Joanne Clark is honoring the Masons at the Official Visits this year.  She is selecting a Mason from a list given to her form the Worthy Matrons of each Chapter.  They will be called the "Minuteman" to go along with her patriotic theme. To qualify for the award, the Mason must be a 10 year member of Eastern Star, have served as Worthy Patron in the Chapter, and been active in the Chapter.  The pins are beautiful and were purchased from Dave Hattrick of ID, now residing for a spell in AZ.
So let's give these outstanding Masons some credit for all their work they do for our beautiful Order!  I will need some help here so please let me know who has been given this award in your Chapter during the Official Visit.

Tricksters or Guides?

Beware as Halloween approaches; you may be treated to some ghostly tricks.

By Brad and Sherry Steiger

Q: I am certain that I lived in a haunted house when I was 12. All of us--my parents, two sisters, and myself--at one time or another saw the ghost of an elderly woman in the upstairs hallway. Recently, when I was telling some friends about my having seen a ghost when I was a kid, one of them suggested that the ghostly woman might have been my spirit guide. Should I have tried to make contact with the ghost? What is the difference between ghosts and spirit guides, anyway?

A: We think it's a good thing that you did not attempt to contact the ghostly image of the elderly woman. Whether you actually saw the spirit of a deceased former resident of the home or merely an idea-form of the woman somehow impressed in the psychic ether of the house, it is likely that, because you were a child and very impressionable as children are, you could have become more fearful and prone to having entities hanging around you.

Five Ways to Identify a Ghost
The term "ghost" can mean different things to different people--none of which applies to the concept of a spirit guide. Here are some of the more recognized manifestations of the unknown that are called "ghosts":

1. Spirits of the Dead: Traditionally, these are earthbound spirits of the deceased who have been unable to quit their attachment to the people, places, or things of the physical world and have not yet progressed into the Light of a higher spiritual dimension.

2. Crisis Apparitions: In these cases, a ghostly image of a person known to the observer is seen when the individual is, in fact, elsewhere, undergoing a crisis or meeting his or her death. For example, a man in Detroit is sitting reading in his living room when he looks up to see his father standing in front of him. The image waves good-bye and fades away. Moments later, a telephone call informs the man that his father has just passed away in his home in Dallas.

3. Phantoms: Ghosts that habitually appear in a particular locale are known as phantoms. Numerous communities have their own traditional phantom, such as a ghostly hound that stands watch over a graveyard, a phantom nun that wanders near the ruins of an ancient convent, and, yes, phantom horsemen who guard old bridges. Interestingly, it seems that such phantoms are most often sighted around Halloween, when the mass psyche is directed toward thoughts of things that go bump in the night.

4. Poltergeists: The most disruptive of all haunting phenomena may not be the work of a nasty ghost, but explosions of psychic energy released by someone undergoing a highly stressful or severe psychological adjustment, such as puberty or marital upheaval. These "pelting" or "throwing" ghosts overturn furniture and send dishes, lamps, and other objects flying across rooms.

5. Psychic Residue: Many ghostly manifestations contain no spirit entities of any kind but are merely the psychic residue left behind by powerful human emotions, such as hate, fear, or pain. Somehow, the psychic energies of those who once inhabited a place are impressed into the natural environment and may be seen by the psychically sensitive as if they were viewing images on a strip of motion picture film that keeps being shown over and over. People might be frightened when seeing such spooks, but they can't interact with such "ghosts" any more than one can interact with the images on a television screen.

So...What Are Spirit Guides?
When we refer to spirit guides in this column, we are speaking of the benevolent multidimensional beings who stand ready to be our helpers and our teachers. Many Native American shamans believe that when one sincerely desires to live a balanced life and serve Spirit, many helpers will manifest to assist on that pilgrim's earthwalk.

When spiritualist mediums refer to their spirit guide, they are speaking of an entity who serves as their "control," a kind of spiritual interlocutor or intermediary who summons those spirits of the deceased who wish to give messages to their loved ones. The guide who works with the medium in this cooperative effort may have once been someone who lived on earth, or the entity may be a multidimensional being that has never expressed itself in human form.

For the traditional shaman, the guide serves as a gatekeeper between worlds, one who ushers the priest to the Other World in order to gain wisdom and insight that he will share with those who seek his counsel. The spirit guide may often take the form of a totem animal.

The idea of a spirit guide dates back to antiquity. Socrates provides us with the most notable example of an individual who received sage guidance from his daemon and who shared this wisdom with others. "Daemon" is not to be confused with "demon," though the two are often mistakenly equated. Actually, the former is better translated as a muse, source of inspiration, or guardian spirit. The great philosopher believed that his guiding spirit kept ceaseless vigil, warning him of approaching danger.

If a ghostly presence materializes in your proximity during this Halloween season, it would be best to assume that it is not your spirit guide and to proceed with caution. It is also best not to attempt communication. There are far too many tricksters out there, and they never leave treats.
