The Most Powerful Book in America

They lie on the table side by side
The Holy Bible and the TV guide.
One is well worn and cherished with pride.
Not the Bible, but the TV guide.

One is used daily to help folks decide.
No, not the Bible, but the TV guide.
As the pages are turned, what shall they see.
Oh, what does it matter, turn on the TV.

Then confusion reigns, they can't all agree
On what they should watch on the old TV.
So they open the book in which they confide,
No, not the Bible, but the TV guide.

The Word of God is seldom read,
Maybe a verse as they fall into bed.
Exhausted and sleepy and tired as can be;
Not from reading the Bible, from watching TV.

So then back to the table side by side,
Lie the Holy Bible and the TV guide.
No time for prayer, no time for the Word,
The plan of Salvation is seldom heard.

MESSAGES FROM MY MAIL BOX

John Schahfer ...
Hi Connie
I just talked to Marilyn Schahfer and she asked me to forward the following:
The current plan is to take John home on Monday (9/18) or as soon as Hospice can make arrangements.  There is no improvement and two doctors have advised her that this is the right course of action.  She does have family and friends that will be with her, but she knows that John would want to go home and maybe she can get some rest there.
She would appreciate you putting this in the next Stars and she knows our prayers and thoughts are with her during this time.
Thanks,
** Joan Kershner

Hot Dog!!!
PLEASURE AT THE PUMP? Don't sell that SUV just yet, advises Forbes. Oil, at a recent $66.50 a barrel, will fall to $45 by mid 2007 and could dip briefly into the 20s in 2008. Sometime next year, we are going to see a $1.95 price on a gas pump, says the magazine. At least that's the view of Michael C. Lynch, president of Strategic Energy & Economic Research in Amherst, Mass. And he swears he hasn't been inhaling fumes. Lynch argues that the threat of disruptions--nuclear brinkmanship, war, terrorism, hurricanes, pipeline corrosion--has larded oil prices with a $20-a-barrel risk premium. As these perils recede, oil prices will fall. (Page 98, Forbes, Oct. 2) Also in this issue: If you have a brand, it better have a smell (P. 76).

Remember when?  Takes some of us back awhile!  ...
"School days, school days, good old golden rule days"
The Boston Latin School was the first public School in America, established in 1635.  Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, and John Hancock are just a few who once attended.  There is a plaque on the sidewalk marking the site of the school.  We had a great time reminiscing with our Residents and staff about their school days memories.
Mary Ann was 5 when she started 1st grade in Townsend.  She attended a one room school house with 11 other kids and 1 teacher.  Mary Ann remembers playing Pom Pom Pullaway and Tag at recess.
Mons also attended a 1 room school house with about 9 students in the 1st through 8th grades with 1 teacher.  His school sat on a hill so at recess there was no baseball, but he also played Pom Pom Pullaway.  He was 7 when he started school in Teigen, Montana.
Palmer has great memories of his school.  He went to a 1 room school and had 1 teacher who taught 1st through 8th grades.  He had to go across the road to get water from the well and use the outhouse.  Palmer remembers walking about 1-1/2 miles.  There were about 22 kids in his school.  Palmer was 6 and started school in Eldorado Township, North Dakota.  At recess, Palmer played Pom Pom Pullaway and Hide and Go Seek.  There were no hot lunches back then so Palmer carried his lunch in a gallon Karo syrup tin.
Our Administrator, Deb remembers starting school in Johnsville, Ohio at 6 years of age.  Deb rode the bus a long distance to school.  There were about 100 kids in her school.  At recess, Deb enjoyed beating up on the boys and kissing them.  She also remembers playing on the monkey bars, and playing Kickball.
Our Office Manager, Marcy started school at the age of 6 in Sheridan, Wyoming.  There were about 180 kids in her school.  Marcy walked about 3 blocks to get to class.  At recess, Marcy played Tether Ball, Four Square and Crack the Whip.
Petty, in the Housekeeping Department, started school at the age of 5 in Butte, MT.  Peggy remembers many tears and not wanting her Mom to leave her.  Peggy lived close to the school and her Mom walked with her everyday.  Peggy's school had about 80 kids and at recess Peggy played on the swings, played Hop Scotch and Jump Rope.
Dorothy remembers starting school at the age of 6 in a bigger school in Deer Lodge, Montana.  Dorothy rode a bus 7 miles to school.  She can remember playing Hop Scotch and playing on the Swings.
Clancy was 5 when he started school in a 1 room schoolhouse with 1 teacher in North Dakota.  Clancy remembers about 20 other students being there.  Together they enjoyed playing baseball.  Clancy walked about 2 blocks to school.
Willi started school in Havre, Montana at the age of 6.  Willi went to a bigger school with different rooms and teachers for each grade.  Willi enjoyed playing baseball and later playing basketball.  Willi walked 1/2 block to get to school.
Mary rode her horse about 2 miles to school in Willard, Montana.  Mary started school at the age of 5.  She remembers about 25 kids in her school.  It was a 2 story building with one teacher on each floor.  At recess, Mary checked on her horse.
Lucy walked 1-1/2 blocks to Jefferson school in Helena, Montana.  She was 6 years old when she started school, and enjoyed playing on the rings at recess.

MINUTE MAN AWARDS

WGM Joanne Clark is honoring the Masons at the Official Visits this year.  She is selecting a Mason from a list given to her form the Worthy Matrons of each Chapter.  They will be called the "Minuteman" to go along with her patriotic theme. To qualify for the award, the Mason must be a 10 year member of Eastern Star, have served as Worthy Patron in the Chapter, and been active in the Chapter.  The pins are beautiful and were purchased from Dave Hattrick of ID, now residing for a spell in AZ.
So let's give these outstanding Masons some credit for all their work they do for our beautiful Order!  I will need some help here so please let me know who has been given this award in your Chapter during the Official Visit.

FDA Spinach Ban Continues
NewsEmergency.com
9/19/2006

UPDATE: FDA Statement on Foodborne E. coli O157:H7 Outbreak in Spinach Consumer Advice
FDA advises consumers not to eat fresh spinach or fresh spinach-containing products until further notice.
If individuals believe they may have experienced symptoms of illness after consuming fresh spinach or fresh spinach-containing products, FDA recommends that they seek medical advice.
Case Reports
To date, 114 cases of illness due to E. coli infection have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including 18 cases of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), 60 hospitalizations, and one death. Illnesses continue to be reported to CDC. This is considered to be an ongoing investigation.
States Affected
There are now 21 confirmed states: California, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
Symptoms of E. coli O157:H7 Illness
    E. coli O157:H7 causes diarrhea, often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called HUS. HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.
Two Recalls
On September 17, 2006, River Ranch, of Salinas, California, announced a recall of packages of spring mix containing spinach. River Ranch obtained bulk spring mix containing spinach from Natural Selections. The following brands are involved: Fresh N' Easy Spring Mix and Hy-Vee Spring mix containing baby spinach, distributed to retailers in Texas, Iowa and New Mexico. Product was packed in 5 oz. bags and 5 oz. plastic trays. Products that do not contain spinach are not part of this recall.
On September 15, 2006, Natural Selections Foods, LLC, of San Juan Bautista, California, announced a recall of all of its products containing spinach in all brands they pack with "Best if Used by Dates" of August 17, 2006 through October 1, 2006. These products include spinach and any salad with spinach in a blend, both retail and food service products. Products that do not contain spinach are not part of this recall.
Natural Selections Foods, LLC brands include: Natural Selections Foods, Pride of San Juan, Earthbound Farm, Bellissima, Dole, Rave Spinach, Emeril, Sysco, O Organic, Fresh Point, River Ranch, Superior, Nature's Basket, Pro-Mark, Compliments, Trader Joe's, Ready Pac, Jansal Valley, Cheney Brothers, Coastline, D'Arrigo Brothers, Green Harvest, Mann, Mills Family Farm, Premium Fresh, Snoboy, The Farmer's Market, Tanimura & Antle, President's Choice, Cross Valley, and Riverside Farms.
The affected products were also distributed to Canada, Mexico, and Taiwan. No illnesses from these countries have been reported. FDA continues to investigate whether other companies and brands are involved.

SMALL QUIZ ...

Our friend, MW Bill R. Wood sent me this quiz ... and I must say!  I didn't do too well answering the questions.  Must have been a day when my mind was bogged with other issues!!!  Anyway ... try your skill.  Answers after my signature!

The following short quiz consists of 4  questions and will tell you whether you are qualified to be a professional.  The questions are NOT that difficult. But don't look at the answers UNTIL you have answered them all
    1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?
    2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?
    3. The Lion  King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals attend... except one.  Which animal does not attend?
    4. There is a river you must cross but it is used by  crocodiles, and you do not have a boat. How do you manage it?

LOWRY'S HINTS

HINT 1:   Dusting Made Easy:  To create a dust cloth that leaves a shine, soak your normal dust cloth in a  mixture of two cups water, two   tablespoons vinegar and four drops lemon oil. Once the cloth is soaked through, remove it and wring it out, then store it in a glass jar with a lid until you want to use it.
        * * * * * * * * * * * * *
HINT 2:  Make sure that you have a way of reaching those hard-to-reach places by having on hand a yardstick, broom handle or even a hockey stick. Simply put
a sock on the end of any of these, and wipe those corners and moldings.
        * * * * * * * * * * * * *
HINT 3:  Red wine on carpet or fabric:  Immediately cover the stain liberally with club soda.  For carpets, you can also rub with waterless hand cleaner. In either case, if the stain persists, dab it with hydrogen peroxide and rinse with cold water.  If all else fails, try cream of tartar paste.
Crayon/marker on tile and floors:  To remove from tiled walls or vinyl surfaces, apply a little toothpaste and rub with a soft cloth. Persistent scuff-marks on linoleum can often be removed by rubbing them with toothpaste.
        * * * * * * * * * * * * *
HINT 4:  Tea and coffee:  On fabric, spray with hairspray, then rub with a bar of soap and rinse in cold water. Ketchup:  On carpet, first dab away as much as possible, being careful not to work the stain deeper into the  carpet. Cover the area with a liberal amount of regular (foamy) shaving cream and rub vigorously with a sponge. When you wipe away the excess, the stain should go too.
        * * * * * * * * * * * * *
HINT 5:  No need to buy an expensive espresso machine to make steamed milk for your morning latte. Just heat milk on the stovetop for a short amount of time.
Remove the milk from the heat and beat with an electric mixer until foamy.

Cappuccino Cherry Trifle
>From Taste of Home
Field editor Katie Sloan of Charlotte, North Carolina says, "this is a rich dessert that's as pretty to look at as it is good to eat. It's the perfect complement to any meal."

3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
2 tablespoons instant coffee granules
1 tablespoon baking cocoa
1-1/2 cups milk
2 tablespoons water
4 egg yolks, beaten
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2-3/4 cups heavy whipping cream
2 loaves (10-3/4 ounces each) frozen pound cake, thawed and cut into
1-inch cubes
1 can (15 ounces) pitted dark sweet cherries
1 cup (6 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips

For custard, combine the sugar, cornstarch, coffee granules and cocoa in a large saucepan. Stir in milk and water until smooth. Bring to a boil over medium heat; cook and stir for 1-2 minutes or until thick and bubbly. Remove from the heat. Stir a small amount of hot mixture into yolks; return all to the pan, stirring constantly. Bring to a gentle boil; cook and stir 2 minutes longer. Remove from the heat; gently stir in vanilla. Refrigerate until cool.
In a large mixing bowl, beat cream until stiff peaks form. Fold 2-1/2 cups whipped cream into cooled custard. Set aside the remaining whipped cream for garnish.
Place half of the cake cubes in a 3-qt. trifle bowl. Drain cherries, reserving juice; sprinkle cake with 3-4 tablespoons cherry juice. Top with half of the cherries, custard mixture. Repeat layers. Garnish with reserved whipped cream and remaining chocolate chips. Yield: 12-14 servings.

JOKES ..

A woman, standing scantily clad, looks in the bedroom mirror and says to her husband, "I feel horrible, I look fat and ugly. Pay me a compliment."
The husband replies, "Your eyesight's almost perfect."
    He never heard the shot....
- - - - - - - - - - - -

While I'm not sure of the procedure now, when I was in the Navy, every so often, you got umpteen shots, whether you needed them or not. The carrier pilot in front of me as we passed thru the line asked for a drink of water after receiving what seemed to be at least a dozen different needles.
The Corpsman asked if he was dizzy.
"No, not at all." he replied. "I just wanna see if I'm still water-tight."

Two youngsters were closely examining bathroom scales on display at the department store. "Have you ever seen one of these before?" one asked. "Yeah, my mom and dad have one," the other replied. "What's it for?" asked the first boy. "I don't know," the second boy answered. "I think you stand on it and it either makes you mad or cry. That's what it does to my Dad and Mom."

AND A WORD FROM YOURS TRULY ...

And now to our busy weekend.  More about that next issue.  Stay 'cool' and 'love one another'!

ANSWERS TO SMALL QUIZ ...
No. 1:  The correct answer is: Open the refrigerator, put in the  giraffe, and close the door. This question tests whether you tend to do simple  things in an overly complicated way.   Correct Answer: You jump into the river and swim across.  Have you not been listening? All the crocodiles are attending the Animal  Meeting.  This tests whether you  learn quickly fro m your mistakes.
No. 2:  Did you say, Open the refrigerator, put in the elephant,  and close the refrigerator?
Wrong Answer.  Correct Answer: Open the  refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door.  This tests your ability to think through the: repercussions of your previous  actions.
No. 3:   Correct Answer: The Elephant. The elephant is in the  refrigerator. You just put him in there. This tests your memory. Okay, even if  you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one  more  chance to show your true abilities.
No. 4:  Correct Answer: You jump into the river and swim across.  Have you not been listening? All the crocodiles are attending the Animal  Meeting.
This tests whether you  learn quickly fro m your mistakes.According to Anderson Consulting Worldwide, around 90% of  the professionals they tested got all questions wrong, but many preschoolers got several correct answers. Anderson Consulting says this conclusively disproves the theory that most professionals have the brains of a four-year-old.
Send this out  to frustrate all of your smart friends. PS: Just the fact that I sent it to you should  make you feel good.
