THE STARS OF WASHINGTON

A FRIEND IS LIKE ...

A friend is like a flower,
A tulip to be exact.
Or maybe like a brand new gate,
That never comes unlatched.

A friend is like an owl,
Both beautiful and wise.
Or perhaps a friend is like a ghost,
Whose spirit never dies.

A friend is like those blades of grass,
You can never mow,
Standing tall and proud,
In a perfect little row.

A friend is like a heart that goes
Strong until the end.
Where would we be in this world,
If we didn't have a friend....

MESSAGES FROM MY MAIL BOX

Prayers needed ...
Dear Connie
Ron and I just came from visiting Amaryllis Nokes at Sacred Heart.  You probably already know she had a stroke Monday.  We were pleased to see how well she is doing, talking and has an up attitude saying she will be ok.
She will be moved tomorrow to St. Lukes Rehab for therapy, some paralysis on her left side.  Their daughter said they will try to put her in a private room so they can put a bed in for Bert.
They need all our prayers for a speedy recovery.  (Cards:  1700 Orin-Rice RD, Rice, WA 99167)

We also went to Deaconess Hospital to see John and Marilyn Schahfer .  John had an angiogram last week on Tuesday morning and that night had a severe stroke, unable to talk or swallow so has feeding tube and paralyzed on the right side.  Marilyn is having a hard time coping with everything and they need our thoughts and prayers for solutions to their problems.  John is in room 715 at Deaconess Hospital, Spokane.
Just sending this up to date information in case you do not already know. Maybe put it on the Stars of Washington.
    Thank you Connie.
Love & Hugs

Thank you ...
Please, would you include the following in the Stars.  There is just no way to acknowledge everyone in person. Star love, Kit
To my beloved Sister and Brothers,
It is with an overflowing heart that I thank all of you for the overwhelming flood of love, prayers and support the family and I have received during this difficult time.  We simply can't thank you all personally, but, please, know that each card and message was read and cherished.
Eastern Star has been a large part of our lives for many years, and given us much Joy.  The memories of many happy, funny and sometimes sad times have made Jack's loss easier.
While his health had been failing for several years, his death was unexpected, and fortunately very gentle.  We were with him, and able to tell him he was loved, and now know he is a peace, as we are.
Again, our sincere gratitude, and Star love,
** Kit Wells, Kate and Glen Kalmbach, Gerry and Terry Mosler, Linda Wells, and all the rest of the extended Wells family

Thank You ...
Connie - would you please include this in your next Stars?  Thanks - Gerry
Words are so inadequate to express the gratitude we feel for all the expressions of sympathy on the recent passing of my dad, Jack Wells.  Dad was a wonderful man, a devout Mason, and a the best dad a daughter and son-in-law could have, and he will be missed.  The many, many cards we have received and the wonderful turnout of people at his memorial have been so helpful to us and we appreciate all of you for caring and sharing.  People who have never belonged to an organization such as this have no idea what a wonderful support group exists, but we do, and we feel truly blessed.
Our sincere thanks to all of you for being the friends that you are.
In Star Love and Friendship,
** Gerry & Terry Mosler

Great idea Webmasters of Washington GC!  We need a link to go to and check weather forecasts in each of our areas.  According to the news this evening, there was snow on Mt. Spokane today!  Ooooh!  I am not ready for this, as well as I love that white stuff!

Extra Paraphernalia ...
Hi Connie,
Please put the following in the next issue of  "Stars".
There have been several Chapters that have merged with Montesano Chapter in the last couple of years, and Grand Chapter does not have any place to put our paraphernalia. We are requesting that if any Chapter needs any paraphernalia, please notify Barbara Russell at maruss@willapabay.org   or 360-875-5573.    If you write by snail mail my address is PO Box 1122, South Bend 98586. Our address is incorrect in the Blue Book.  We have several rugs, emblems, pedestals, etc. Some of you have already asked me about these and I have a list, but please notify me again so I can make sure the list is complete. Our extra sets of Jewels will be going to Italy for Chapters starting up there.
Thanks,
** Barb Russell

Alpha Chapter News ...
Connie, please add this invite to the next edition of STARS. Thanks
Alpha Chapter, Cle Elum, invites one and all to the Official Visit of the Worthy Grand Matron and Patron, Joanne & Terry, on September 26.  The dress for the evening is Heritage, Pioneer or Western, your choice of the three.  I'm not sure what time we'll start, our normal time is 7:00 p.m. but the book says 7:30, so I suppose we'll start the coffee and 'chew the fat 'round the campfire'  waiting for ya'll to show up. We'll even put some chow out for those who ride in from a long ways.   So come on down, and experience the authentic Heritage of Cle Elum and Alpha's 100th year.  We always have a hootin' good time and there's lots of chow to go around.
    See ya'll on the trail!
** Jeanine Baunsgard, WM Alpha

Metal from the Twin Towers ...
HI Connie-
What a great article concerning the steel from the WTC being used in the construction of the USS New York.  However, not all the beams went to this project.  Two very long beams were trucked by volunteers from New York City to Albuquerque, NM for the construction of a church bell tower in memory of all the fallen heroes of Sept. 11th.  I was fortunate to be working across the street from this project at the time and it was truly awe-inspiring to watch its development to fruition.
When the beams arrived by truck in Albuquerque, a special ceremony was conducted "blessing the beams" in remembrance from where they originated. Once enough donations and pledges were committed to this construction and the bell tower was complete, a beautiful Mass is conducted and is still conducted every year commemorating all our fallen heroes with representation from each of the armed service branches.  The tower and the ceremony are quite spectacular.
Should anyone be in the area of Albuquerque, NM please stop and view this magnificent structure.  As the man said in the article, it will raise the hair on the back of your neck!  The location is at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 4th and Stover Street NW, Albuquerque, NM.
** Rosemary Archibeque, JPGM/NM
Wasn't aware of all of this!  Thanks for sharing this information, Sister Rosemary!!!

International Grand Representatives  Association Website
The International Grand Representatives Association has a web site: www.oesigra.org however it appears the only contact available is through: igra.star@yahoo.com
    The current officers are:
President - Carloe Schrade, Minnesota
1st VP - Mary Thompson, Oklahoma
Secretary - Janet Sannness, Minnesota
No contact information for any of the officers is posted on the web site. An unfortunate omission, in my opinion.

Before everyone starts sending me hate mail I am sending this out  which is from someone that I trust here in Garfield and definitely more computer savy than me.  I am so sorry for sending out the e-mail about the WTC virus which I have  just learned is a hoax.  I honestly thought it was for real.  A friend sent it to me and I got fooled by it.  Please do forgive me and my ignorance.  Thank you.

The Sonic Memorial Project

"SonicMemorial.org is an open archive and an online audio installation of the history of The World Trade Center" which hosts a collection of 'stories, ambient sounds, voicemails, and archival recordings to tell the rich history of the twin towers, the neighborhood and the events of 9/11.'  Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva, producers of National Public Radio's Lost & Found Sound series, were instrumental in putting together this 'cross-media collaboration of more than 50 independent radio and new media producers, artists, historians, and people from around the world who have contributed personal and archival recordings.'  Visitors can 'immerse' themselves in an 'interactive soundscape of voices, stories and audio traces from the World Trade Center.'  This site helps us not forget the devastation that the 9/11 attack wrecked.  It is an ongoing project, currently with over 1,000 contributions; should you have any sounds that will help preserve the history of the events, you are invited to add your contribution to the memorial.  Website:  http://sonicmemorial.org/public/index.html

MINUTE MAN AWARDS

WGM Joanne Clark is honoring the Masons at the Official Visits this year.  She is selecting a Mason from a list given to her form the Worthy Matrons of each Chapter.  They will be called the "Minuteman" to go along with her patriotic theme. To qualify for the award, the Mason must be a 10 year member of Eastern Star, have served as Worthy Patron in the Chapter, and been active in the Chapter.  The pins are beautiful and were purchased from Dave Hattrick of ID, now residing for a spell in AZ.
So let's give these outstanding Masons some credit for all their work they do for our beautiful Order!  I will need some help here so please let me know who has been given this award in your Chapter during the Official Visit.

TABLE LODGE ... Ever wonder??

An annual Table Lodge was a big deal in one of the towns in South Dakota where I used to be a member. Our big fund raiser of the year was the Roast Beef Dinner which the Chapter prepared. The Chapter members and the spouses who came with their husbands served the meal that then went to an adjoining room to eat our share. It was real gravy from the drippings and real potato which was mashed. Since the roast were large, they were moist and delicious. Men came from lodges all over that part of the state to share in the meal. As you said, they held a meeting at that location as well.

I have been to Table Lodges with My Father... and have catered to a few in Winnipeg. The Glass is called a cannon and holds about 2 and a half oz. of wine or
what ever... Most of the table Lodges I have attended have more than 3 toasts... but we are in Canada

I asked my husband Garry to explain about "Table Lodge" in PA.
Recently one of the Master's held an open Table Lodge and guests were allowed to attend.
"There are three toasts to a Table Lodge.....the first is given by the Jr. War. and is to Grand Lodge (usually the speaker is the DD); the second toast is given by the Sr. War and is made to George Washington (speaker); the third and last toast is given by the Master and is made to Worldwide Masonry (speaker). The speakers give a short talk that corresponds with that particular toast.........Garry " There is more to it than that I'm sure, but Garry is not permitted to
tell me about it.
The toasts are made with wine, grape juice, or whatever the Lodge deems appropriate. When I attended it was grape juice. Some Lodges have inscribed glasses that are given to the participants. That Glass is called a "Shooter"
Garry is in his ninth year as our Worthy Patron. Last year he was in the West.

Brother and Sisters All,
Normally, there are seven (7) toasts in a Table Lodge. They are as follows:

I. To the United States Of America (SONG: "AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL")

II. To the Ancient and Gentle Craft of Freemasonry and the Memory of it's Founders

III. To the Grand Master and Grand Lodge Of The State Of New York'

I V. To the Masonic Creed: FRIENDSHIP, MORALITY AND BROTHERLY LOVE (SONG: "IT'S A GREAT THING TO BE A MASON")
ADDRESS BY: Highest ranking Grand Lodge Officer Present, etc.

V. To Our Ancient And Present Masters

VI. To The Concordant Bodies Of Freemasonry

VII. The Tyler's Toast

The above was taken from a Table Lodge that was presented at a Lodge in the Grand Lodge of New York. Be advised that this is not set in stone and there are a number of variations to a Table Lodge depending upon if it is public or not, and which appendant body is putting it on. (Shrine, Masons, Eastern Star, York Rite, Scottish Rite, etc.)

A Jewel From the Past
By RoseMary Salzman

Digging in my garden, I work with the sweet smelling soil. What is this? I turn up a marble!

I clean it off with my worn work glove, shine it up a bit and peer at it closely. It is an opaque orb, with a green stripe, obviously very old, as children have not attended school here for the past 40 years!

You see, I live in an old one-roomed schoolhouse. It was built in 1884. What a treasure I have! The joy and beauty of turning up a child's memory is like striking gold or seeing a living memory from the past. I am really excited!!

Later, as I sit in my yard swing, I hold the small jewel carefully in my hand. It feels warm as I wrap my fingers around it. My thoughts go back to school days of a bygone era. Who was the child that played "for keeps" in this yard, or jumped rope on the hardened surface of the playground? Did they sit under these century old oak trees and "tell secrets" as I did when I was a child?

I hear their happy laughing voices, as I close my eyes and dream. I hear the boys shouting as their game of "ball" heats up with a close score! I hear the school bell ringing as the teacher gathers her charges, big and small, back to their desks.

Sometimes as I walk under the trees, or wander into the nearby woods, I "feel" the presence of these young students. As I sit in my "gathering room," I hear the scuffling of shoes on the hardwood floors or the sniffle of a little nose. I smell wax of broken crayons and the warm smell of wet mittens drying on the black pot bellied stove.

I love my little schoolhouse! Yes, it's mine...for now! Living in this old treasure, I feel I am here to care and preserve not only the building and grounds, but the memories that whisper through the many tall antique glass panes, into the loft, up and over the arched ceiling and down around my comfortable chair.

How blessed I feel! As I work in the yard, continuing to look for small treasures of yesterday, I thank my Lord for giving me this hallowed place to live.

LOWRY'S HINTS

HINT 1:   Here's a great way to clean an oven rack without filling up the kitchen with nasty oven-cleaner fumes. Take the rack outside and put it in a large plastic garbage bag. Spray oven cleaner into the bag, tie the bag shut and leave outside overnight. Rinse thoroughly with the hose before taking it back in the house.
        * * * * * * * * * * * * *
HINT 2:  Coax a stubborn price sticker off of a drinking glass by placing the glass in the freezer overnight. The glue will freeze, making it easy to remove the sticker.
        * * * * * * * * * * * * *
HINT 3:   To keep shoes dry and comfortable, lightly powder the insides with talcum powder.
        * * * * * * * * * * * * *
HINT 4:  Untangling a chain necklace can be difficult, but to make the job easier, dust the chain with talcum powder.  Use a safety pin to help dislodge really
sticky knots.
        * * * * * * * * * * * * *
HINT 5:  The best way to clean a grill is to first heat up the coals. As the coals heat, they will burn off a lot of the dried-on food. Use a grill brush to
clear off any remaining particles.
        * * * * * * * * * * * * *
HINT 6:  See a rain shower coming on? Run out and spray the outdoor furniture with cleaner, then run back inside and watch the rain do the cleaning.

RECIPES

COPYCAT BULLFISH SHRIMP AND CHEESE GRITS

6 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups quick-cooking grits
1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
Pinch of ground nutmeg
Tabasco sauce, to taste
12 bacon slices, coarsely chopped
2 pounds large uncooked shrimp, peeled, deveined
1/2 pound mushrooms, sliced
2 cups sliced green onions
2 large garlic cloves, minced
2 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Bring 6 cups water and salt to boil in a heavy large saucepan. Whisk in grits. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until mixture is thick and grits are tender, stirring occasionally, about 10 minutes. Whisk in 1 cup cheese and nutmeg. Season to taste with hot pepper sauce. Cover and set aside.
Cook bacon in large skillet over medium heat until brown but not crisp. Transfer bacon to small bowl, using slotted spoon. Pour off half of drippings from skillet. Add shrimp to same skillet and cook until just pink, about 2 minutes per side. Transfer shrimp to plate, using slotted spoon.  Add mushrooms to same skillet and sauté until tender, about 4 minutes. Add green onions and garlic and sauté 3 minutes. Return shrimp and bacon to skillet. Mix in lemon juice. Season with salt, pepper and hot pepper sauce (I use a lot of Tabasco!).  Bring grits to a simmer.  Add water by tablespoons if grits are too thick. Spoon grits onto plates. Spoon shrimp mixture over. Sprinkle with parsley and serve.   Serves:  4.
