LABOR DAY

Labor Day, which is celebrated in the U.S. on the first Monday of September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the
contributions American workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of [the USA].  ....

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union.
The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, l883. In l884 the first Monday in September was
selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of
New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in l885 Labor Day was
celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

Shortly thereafter, a movement developed to have state legislation to recognize Labor Day. While the first state bill was introduced into the New
York legislature, the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 2l, l887. During that year four more states -- Colorado, Massachusetts, New
Jersey, and New York -- created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania
had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act
making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

MESSAGES FROM MY MAIL BOX

Happenings in North Dakota ...
Dear Connie,
Thank you so much for the effort you go to to give those of us in other states a point of contact with the Sisters & Brothers of WA State OES.  I so enjoy the information you pass on.
We have been in ND since early April (Brother Larry & I).  We took delivery on & set up our ND home on the Arm of Old Van Hook on the North side of Lake Sakakawea.  I had been corresponding with Sister Liz Rodriguez of Venus Chapter in Minot & Sister Betty Whitteman of Naomi Chapter in Mohal, ND.  I was invited to attend Venus Chapter in June &  I did on their Installation date.  Then the following week I attended Grand Chapter, Where I met our current Representative of ND in WA.  She is a wonderful example of grace & a very good representative of WA.
While I was there, my husband fell off the ladder that he was standing on trying to finish the assembly of the roof of our home.  He landed on the ladder which had slipped out from under him.  He was a little over 4 weeks healing.
Nine days ago, at sunset, we were hit by a small Tornado.  I had just served Larry supper & I was on the chair by the window in the living room Larry was on the rocking chair on the other side of the room.  I was drawing what I saw outside, when I said, that cloud looks funny like it is touching the ground.  He said it looked to him like a rain curtain cloud like we get in Western WA.  I said, It is to thin to be that.  Then I said, It is moving fast from the Pouch Point area to our land.  It is going to hit us.  In seconds, It hit the back end of our Mobile Home, and the home started shaking.  The funnel was big enough so that as it passed We could see the wind swirling on both sides of our home.  It tore the tar paper off of the roof of the pump house that Brother Larry had worked on for two days & carried it to the other side of our porch.  It picked up, folded & stacked our lawn chairs next to the light post & it moved our small boat & trailer about ten feet.  I had been watching TV, when they announced that Mandan, ND (80 miles southeast of us) would have tornados.  This did not include this area of the state.    We could not see the the Mobile Home right next to us during this episode.  I was praying & God I am sure set his angels about us to protect.  We plan to be home in late Sept.
By the way, I do not have e-mail addresses for Olympia Chapter, but one of their members, Sister Karolyn Earnshaw had a heart attack on the 7th of the month & was taken to the ER.  They sent her home as my sister was due to visit from CA.  She is still living in the home she shares with Sister Kathryn Wilber, who has lost her driver's license.  They will be 88 on November 26, 2006.  Sister Kathryn is my mom.

News of Pat Foster, WM (8/22) ...
I just got back from a visit with Pat.  She returned home from the hospital late last evening 8/21.  Pat is in upbeat spirits, tho quite bed ridden. She has a machine that she is suppose to use ten hours a day.  It automatically bends and releases her knee--when bent it is at a 60 degree angle.  She was very fortunate that her knee cap was not fractured after all,  However to reset the leg as it should be set, they had to saw the bone, directly under the knee cap, in half to set the leg. She has an L(el) shape plate and five screws holding her leg in place.  We all hope she will be up and about soon.

Star Point Signs ....
An interesting question was posed to me concerning the Rob Morris program I spoke about last week. I originally received the program, The Vision Of Rob Morris, from Peg McElroy, so she may know the answer. In Maryland the star points are not allowed to demonstrate the signs except in the opening of the chapter. Is this the case in any other chapters or is it in all chapters?
** Patricia Salzmann, Associate Conductress, Bryan #222, Bryan, TX GGC

I know some Jurisdictions the Star Points do not use the motions during the Degrees while others do. Some permit the signs during closed meeting agendas or at least used to. I have a copy of one from my mother which came from the resource library at the OES Temple in Washington DC, but that was many years ago. I think it is one of those things you need to check with your own book of Instruction and maybe the Grand Chapter office to be sure about what is or is not permitted. Another one of those things that does not have a uniform code of usage throughout OES land.

OES and Other Fraternal Cross Stitch Sites ...
I was very fortunate in locating the lady who wanted the cross stitch patterns, however I seemed to locate a whole lot more ladies who also asked for patterns.  I have been very fortunate to locate several very nice sights that are selling patterns for emblems of our entire Masonic family in Cross Stitch.  I was shocked at the amount of people interested in this.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to just post them in Montana Stars, and let folks check them out themselves.  I am also enclosing one fantastic sight that, unfortunately has no Masonic family patterns, but is a very good general cross stitch sight.

This sight does not contain any fraternal patterns, just good cross stitch:

Bus to General Grand Chapter ...
General Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star will be held in Minneapolis on October 27-November 3, 2006.  The Montana delegates are taking a bus as this is about as near as we will have a chance to be at this international event and it is a perfect way to get better acquainted with our sisters and brothers.  The bus would leave on October 26 from Helena and pick up passengers on the way to Billings and Glendive.  We will overnight in Bismarck.
Our "fun" day will be at Mall of America and our Montana Dinner will be held at Lord Fletcher's on Lake Minnetonka.
There is room on the bus.  If you are interested, contact Betty Lockey, 406-442-2592, 1300 Winne, Helena 59601 or e-mail:  pgmbetty@aol.com.

MINUTE MAN AWARDS

WGM Joanne Clark is honoring the Masons at the Official Visits this year.  She is selecting a Mason from a list given to her form the Worthy Matrons of each Chapter.  They will be called the "Minuteman" to go along with her patriotic theme. To qualify for the award, the Mason must be a 10 year member of Eastern Star, have served as Worthy Patron in the Chapter, and been active in the Chapter.  The pins are beautiful and were purchased from Dave Hattrick of ID, now residing for a spell in AZ.
So let's give these outstanding Masons some credit for all their work they do for our beautiful Order!  I will need some help here so please let me know who has been given this award in your Chapter during the Official Visit.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE STEEL FROM THE WTC?

USS New York
With a year to go before it even touches the water, the Navy's amphibious assault ship USS New York has already made history.   It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.  USS New York is about 45 percent complete and should be ready for launch in mid-2007.  Katrina disrupted construction when it pounded the Gulf Coast last summer, but the 684-foot vessel escaped serious damage, and workers were back at the yard near New Orleans two weeks after the storm.
It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists.  It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.
"It would be fitting if the first mission this ship would go on is to make sure that bin Laden is taken out, his terrorist organization is taken out," said Glenn Clement, a paint foreman.  "He came in through the back door and knocked our towers down and (the New York ) is coming right through the front door, and we want them to know that."
Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, La., to cast the ship's bow section.  When it was poured into the molds  on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there.  "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."
Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up."  "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said.  "They knocked us down.  They can't keep us down.  We're going to be back."

MANY NON-LIVING THINGS HAVE A GENDER ...

Did you know that many non-living things have a gender?   For example:

1)     Ziploc Bags -- They are Male, because they hold everything in, but you can see right through them.
2)     Tire -- Male, because it goes bald and it's often over-inflated.
3)      Hot Air Balloon -- Male, because, to get it to go anywhere, you have to light a fire under it and, of course, there's the hot air component.
4)      Sponges -- Female, because they're soft, squeezable and retain water.
5)      Web Page -- Female, because it's always getting hit on.
6)      Subway -- Male, because it uses the same old lines to pick people up.
7)      Hourglass -- Female, because over time, the weight can shift to the bottom.
8)      Hammer -- Male, because it hasn't changed much over the last 5,000 years, but it's handy to have around.

Dear Connie -
Under the heading 'Freemasonry Is A Way Of Life' Subtitle:  Religion, it reads that 'volume of the 'Secret Law' is open upon the alter at every meeting.  I believe it is no 'secret', but rather 'Sacred'.  FYI.
Fraternally,

LOWRY'S HINTS

HINT 1:  When moving ... leave It Behind.... Avoid moving anything you don't really need. It is  expensive, time-consuming, and physically unnecessary to move things you won't be using. If you don't use it now, you most likely won't use it later.
                             *****
HINT 2:  USE THE A-B-C SYSTEM:   Everything you pack does not have to be unpacked the first day in your new home. If it contains essential items, mark it PRIORITY A. If the contents are important, but not crucial, mark the box PRIORITY B. If the box contains out of season items, holiday items and other things you won't need right away, mark the box PRIORITY C. Then, unpack in A, B, C order.
                             *****
HINT 3:  Can Opener Cleaner:  If you need to clean your electric can opener, soak an old toothbrush in vinegar, hold it under the wheel/blade assembly and turn on your opener for about 30 seconds, this should do the trick very nicely.
                             *****
HINT 4:  Cancelled Check Container: This is a great use for an old diaper wipe container...   It's the perfect size. When the bank returns cancelled checks,
they can immediately be filed in this container. This keeps them all together, makes it easy to flip through them if you need to, and makes it so much easier to find the checks you need when getting ready for your taxes at the end of the year.
                              *****
HINT 5:  If you have trouble keeping contact paper smooth when lining shelves or drawers, smooth out the paper with a blackboard eraser.
                             *****
HINT 6:  Putting salt on your fireplace logs will reduce the amount of ashes produced.

Apple Pecan Crepes
>From Taste of Home
This is a very easy, quick and delicious brunch item. When they taste the nutty apple pie filling tucked inside the creamy vanilla sauce draped over the tender crepes, everyone "oohs" and "aahs" between bites. Prepare a big batch—people tend to go back for seconds and even thirds!

1 can (21 ounces) apple pie filling
1/2 cup coarsely chopped pecans
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
12 prepared crepes (7 inches each)
1 egg, beaten
3/4 cup half-and-half cream
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon almond extract

DIRECTIONS:  In a bowl, combine pie filling, pecans and cinnamon; mix well. Spread 2 rounded tablespoonfuls down the center of each crepe; roll up
tightly. Place in a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking dish. Bake, uncovered, at 375° for 10-14 minutes or until heated through.  Meanwhile, in a microwave-safe bowl, combine the egg, cream, sugar and extracts. Cover and microwave at 50% power for 5-6 minutes or until thickened, stirring every 2 minutes. Cool. Serve over crepes. Yield: 6 servings.
Editor's Note: This recipe was tested with an 850-watt microwave.

A man was walking down a beach and saw a bottle floating in the surf.  He thought to himself, "Oh, message in a bottle." He took out the cork and out popped a genie. The genie said, "Thank you for releasing me. Now you may have 3 wishes -- however, I'm a special genie. I love my mother-in-law, so anything you wish for, your mother-in-law will receive double."
The man first asked for a million dollar house on the beach. Poof! A gorgeous house appeared. Just then -- POOF!! -- a house twice as big appeared next door and his mother-in-law was waving at him from the window.
He hurried inside to avoid her. As he was admiring his new house, he turned to the genie and said, "For my second wish, put $10 million on that table."  Poof! There was so much money, it was falling off the table. Then POOF!! Next door, the money was flying out the windows and his mother-in-law got $20 million.
He was getting frustrated by this time and turned to the genie, "OK, let me get this straight. Whatever I wish for, my mother-in-law gets double." The genie said, "Yes, I'm the mother-in-law genie, and that's the way it works."
After scratching his head and thinking a bit, he suddenly turns to the genie and says, "OK, for my third wish,... beat me half to death!"

A guy was known among his friends to be very brief an to the point - he really never said too much.
One day, a saleswoman promoting a Avon knocked his door and asked to see his wife, so the guy told her that she wasn't home.
"Well," the woman said, "could I please wait for her?"
The man directed her to the drawing room and left her there for more than three hours.
After feeling really worried, she called out for him an asked, "May I ask where your wife is?"
"She went to the cemetery," he replied.
"And when is she coming back?"
"I don't really know," he said. "She's been there eleven years now!"

Two children  were discussing their selection in the video store.  One boy took Disney's CINDERELLA off the shelf, pointed to the drawing of the title character on the cover, and said, "Oh, she's really good.  I saw her in ALICE IN WONDERLAND."

AND A WORD FROM YOURS TRULY ...

WOW!  It's time for bed and I haven't gotten my two cents worth in ... for what's it worth!  We just returned home Wednesday and I have been busy ever since.  And now it is off to my dad's for a couple of days!  Gotta stay home one day OFF THE COMPUTER and clean house.  While we were in our 5th Wheel this past week, I worked on the Masonic License Plate list on the laptop.  Have all the addresses entered and it works great.  Next project is the STARS lists as then I can send out important messages while we are on the road ... that is, if I can get near a wireless connection.  So far, so good!  Of course, I haven't the vaguest idea if the wireless is coming from the rig next to us, one in the park, or where ... but as long as it works, I am happy!
We went to Evergreen Chapter the other evening to help celebrate their 125th Anniversary and the Official Visit of WGM Joanne and WGP Terry.  What fun to see the Chapter members do their special 'one-of-a-kind' work, plus the great addendum.  Learned a lot from that!
And now it is off to do some resting as I hate doing that in the car ride tomorrow.  I sometimes open my eyes to see Ted waving his hand in front of my eyes ... checking to see if I am asleep.  No, says I.  Just have my eyes shut studying my memory work!  It's printed, you know, on the inside of my eyelids.

Until next time ... Star hugs and happy thoughts.

** Connie
