The Joys of Gardening
Spectacular colors of azaleas in spring;
Beauty the first roses of summer bring;
A hummingbird hovering over bright-red
blooms;
Sunshine streaming into garden rooms.
Soft rain nurturing flowers fair;
Dew on blossoms from the cool night air;
The scent of rich moist soil pure;
New seeds sprouting strong and sure;
Toiling in the garden with lots of mirth;
Appreciating the beauty of God's good
Earth;
These are the JOYS OF GARDENING!

MESSAGES FROM MY MAIL BOX
Hi kiddo,
I will not be attending any OV this upcoming week and will miss
you all!!! As some of you have heard Chuck, Dakoda and I were
involved in an accident on the way home for the Grand Chapter rest
stop. WE ARE FINE just a little sore and shook up. We find out
tomorrow if the car will be totaled or not. It was 4 AM and we came
around a blind corner to find a fallen tree across the road. Chuck
had enough time to slam on the brakes and aim for the high part of the
tree. We hit it and it ripped the rack off the car and the struts.
The trunk of the tree hit the car and caved in the roof about nine
inches. The branches did some damage and scared me near to death. I
have always know that God was with me but this really drove it
home!!! If we had hit it any other way or if the windshield had given
way I know in my heart I would not be here today! Looking at where
the branches scratched and dinged the windshield I would have been
impaled. A branch went through the roof rack!!! Anyway, God let us
know he has something in mind for my family and spared us this day
:-) I will live each day and not take anything for granted!!!

If traveling in South Dakota ...
Thank you for the advertising for Al's Oasis in Chamberlain SD. The lemon
cream cheese pie is one of their specialties. Also their apple pie with
cinnamon ice cream isn't too bad either.
All the pies are made from scratch ( no mixes or canned pie mix and no
frozen pies)
Also the coffee is 5 cents as it is at Wall Drug.
If any OES members stop at Al's cafe ask who is working in the salad bar.
(It might be a sister).
My daughter Lorinda Toupal a member of Silverleaf chapter # 96 in Presho
works in the salad bar, bakery and cuts some of those fresh pies in the
mornings

OES Charity Golf Tournament ...
Connie--
In the last issue of "Stars" someone wanted to know if the golf
tournament on the 11th was changing its name. The tournament for the past 6
years has been known as the "OES Charity Golf Tournament" and that
isn't/hasn't changed The proceeds will continue to go to the endowment fund
of the children's language center. The center may have changed its name but
the golf tournament and where the money goes have not changed. We'll see
you at the 6th Annual OES Charity Golf Tournament on Friday, August 11th at
McChord AFB.
--Clayton, Mary Ellen, Bill, Alice & Charlotte -- committee members
WOW! Have I ever stirred up a
hornet's nest when I mistakenly referred to the OES Charity Golf Tournament
as the Rite Care Golf Tournament. I apologize to all who were seriously
offended by this mistake. What I intended to relate was the misuse of the
term Scottish Rite Center for Childhood Language Disorders as the term is no
longer. The Scottish Rite replaced their logo several years ago with the
term 'Rite Care'. Everything else remains the same. Rite Care continues to
provide language therapy to children who have a variety of speech problems.
Again! I wish to apologize to all
those who were so offended.

Martha Chapter news ...
Hello, Connie !
Was reading your STARS issue and this reminded me that,
just in case someone would like to attend our "Summer Fest" on August 12th
-- the wrong date was put in our book. Correct details for this event are:
Sunday, August 13, at 1:30 p.m. -- dinner at Northern
Quest Casino. Anyone who would like to come join us, please do so! This
has become our summer get-together for our chapter, and we would love to see
other OES members there!
Thanks for adding these details, Connie, if you put out
another issue prior to this event!

Warning ...
Connie I do not know if this warning is worth printing in the Star, but it
is an actual happening to me.
I was unable to make it to Grand Chapter for the full session, but wanted
to be there for the election. Knowing, I have road hypnosis, my family agreed
to let me drive over, provided I had a co-pilot with me. Sister Betty
Haubrick agreed to accompany me. I left home at 2:30 A.M. to pick up Betty
and we left her home about 2:50 A.M.. Every so often (quite frequently) Betty
would poke my arm and ask ""Myrtle are you awake?" I was grateful for her
company. On the other side of Ellensburg, I remember taking the exit and
headed for Yakima. Here's where the trouble started----I remember that, but
nothing more for the next approximate 16 to 20 miles. Betty spoke to me twice
or was it more? Anyway I heard in a very loud voice. "Myrtle look at your
speedometer". I replied "what" and again Betty said "Myrtle look at your
speedometer". I did and saw the needle was laying on 100 miles per hour. I
replied "Oh **** the speedometer broke". I. tapped my foot on the gas pedal
and saw the needle move I immediately dropped back to 70. I asked Betty what
made her check my speed and she said," you went into the passing lane and flew
by everything." The scary part of this story is that my eyes were wide open,
but my mind was completely asleep. My family, has forbidden me to drive any
farther than to Sequim 18 miles from home. Let this be a warning to other
drivers---if you have ever gotten tired or don't remember having driven
through and area---please pull over and rest or take an alert passenger with
you. I know if Betty had not been with me and alert to what was happening, I
would not be here to write this now. I wonder how many accidents on the road
are caused by this trouble. Please, please drive carefully..

Room needed at GGC
Hi Connie -
I am looking for someone to share a room with at General Grand. I need
to be there on Fri night the 27th of Oct. I don't snore loud (I don't
think), I sleep in one spot most of the night and I don't cuddle. If there
is anyone going that has a spare space in their room I would like to hear
from them.
If you could put this in one of your Stars I would really appreciate
it.

The Effects of Weather on Golf
By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Dan Pontoriero
When most people check the weather before going out for a round of golf,
they look for two things, will it be cool and will it be dry. August is
National Golf Month and it is a perfect time to realize that weather can
affect not only your comfort and safety on the course; it can affect your game
too.
The air actually affects the distance your ball will go. Knowing course
conditions can really work to your advantage. Just think, how would your game
be affected if you played in Colorado as opposed to Florida? The altitude in
Colorado will make your ball travel further due to the lower air pressure.
The same rule could be applied in Florida if you know what to look for.
The ball will actually travel further in hotter temperatures. Think about it,
heating the atmosphere will cause expansion, thus dropping the pressure
allowing the ball to travel further.
Another uncomfortable but golf ball friendly weather effect is humidity.
The amount of humidity will affect how much spin the ball gets. The more humid
the atmosphere is the less dense it becomes. The ball will in turn travel
further because the decrease in density will result in a slight decrease in
pressure.
It is also important to be safe while playing golf. Heat and lightning are
two major risks that can ruin a day at the country club.
It is always a good idea to prepare for you day whenever you are planning
outdoor activities. Be safe, have fun, and enjoy a great game of golf.

LOWRY'S HINTS
HINT 1: TOOTHPASTE
WORKS WONDERS..... Why spend money on expensive cleaners when all you need is
a tube of toothpaste? Try it to: polish silver
and gold, remove crayon marks from walls, remove ink spots from cloth, remove
fruit punch "moustaches" from kids, deodorize smelly hands, remove
scuffs from shoes, and fill holes in walls.
* * * * * * * * * *
HINT 2: Cleaning Copper: To clean copper pans, give them
a good scrub with dishwashing detergent, then take a half a lemon and pour
salt on it, use it to scrub the copper, you will see the shine come
through. Keep adding salt to the lemon as you clean.
* * * * * * * * * *
HINT 3: Cleaning Your Favorite Silver: Clean silver with
the lemon juice and polish up with a soft clean cloth. Use cotton swabs to
get into difficult crevices. After cleaning your good silver to prevent it
tarnishing, store it in an airtight plastic container.

RECIPES
Black Forest Cheesecake
This is the most awesome cheesecake!
2 Cups finely crushed chocolate wafers (I use Oreo cookie crumbs)
1/3 Cup butter, melted (no substitutes)
1 Tablespoon butter (no substitutes)
1/4 Cup sliced almonds, (crushed to approx. 1/8" pieces)
2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened at room temperature
3/4 Cup granulated sugar
2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 Teaspoon Vanilla extract
1/2 Teaspoon almond extract
24 ounces sour cream
3 Large Eggs
2 Tablespoons Kirsch (Cherry Liqueur)
3/4-1 Cup dried cherries, coarsely chopped
1 C. whipping cream
Semi-sweet chocolate curls
Directions: For crust, in a medium mixing bowl combine cookie crumbs and
1/3 cup melted butter making sure they are thoroughly combined. Generously
grease sides of 9" springform pan. Carefully press cookie crumb mixture in
bottom of pan pressing with a flat-bottomed measuring cup. (Keep the crumbs
from coming up the sides of the pan.) Make sure it is completely pressed into
bottom of pan. Holding pan at an angle, pour almonds into side of pan. Roll
pan around to let almonds coat sides of pan, and let excess pour out.
(Warning: If you turn pan to too high an angle, you risk crust falling out.)
For filling, in a large mixing bowl beat cream cheese, sugar,
flour, vanilla, and almond extract with an electric mixer on medium to high
speed until combined. Add sour cream, eggs, and Kirsch. Beat on low speed just
until combined. Pour half of the filling into the crust-lined springform
pan. Sprinkle chopped dried cherries evenly over the filling. Place the
springform pan in a shallow baking pan on center oven rack. Bake in a 350
degree oven about 55 minutes or until center appears set when shaken (edge
should just start getting lightly browned). Remove springform pan from baking
pan. Cool cheesecake on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Run a small metal spatula
around the edges of the pan to loosen crust (try not to damage almond crust).
Cool 30 minutes more. Remove sides of springform pan. Cool for 1 hour, then
cover and chill for at least 4 hours (overnight is better and a couple days is
even better). Before serving whip cream to soft peaks and spread to within
3/4" of the edge of cheesecake keeping it thicker in the center . . .
domelike). Sprinkle chilled chocolate curls on top. Makes 12-16 servings

Buying Beef...
Choose beef with a bright cherry-red color, without any grayish or brown
blotches. The exception is vacuum-packaged beef, which, due to a lack of
oxygen, has a darker purplish-red color. When exposed to the air, it will turn
to a bright red.
HELOISE

When Storing Foods Made with Eggs: Be aware that foods with custard
fillings, like cream puffs, éclairs and cakes, as well as custards and
meringue pies, should be refrigerated. They should not be left out at room
temperature. If you take them on a picnic, keep them in the cooler until you
are ready to eat them.
-
Removing Oily,
Greasy Stains From Clothing: Get to the stain fast. First you need to
pre-treat the stain with a pre-wash stain remover. Then rub liquid laundry
detergent into the still-wet stain. When you see that the stain is gone,
launder in the hottest water appropriate for the fabric. Use plenty of
detergent too.
-
Keeping Top of
Refrigerator Clean: To avoid an accumulation of greasy dust on this
hard-to-reach place, cover the top with wax paper, plastic wrap, a place mat
or tea towel. Just remove when dirty and your cleaning job will be quick.
-
Covering
Scratches on Furniture: You can use shoe polish that matches the color of
the wood, the meat of a walnut or pecan, colored markers or commercially
prepared boiled linseed oil. Test first on a small place before using.
JOKES ..
A young boy came to Sunday School late. His teacher knew that he was
usually very prompt and asked him if anything was wrong.
The boy replied no, that he was going fishing but his dad told him that he
needed to go to church.
The teacher was very impressed and asked the boy if his dad had explained
to him why it was more important to go to church than to go fishing,
To which the boy replied, yes he did, dad said he didn't have enough bait
for both of us.

The ninety-five year old woman at the nursing home received a visit from
one of her fellow church members.
"How are you feeling?" the visitor asked.
"Oh," said the lady, "I'm just worried sick!"
"What are you worried about, dear?" her friend asked. "You look like
you're in good health. They are taking care of you, aren't they?"
"Yes, they are taking very good care of me."
"Are you in any pain?" she asked.
"No, I have never had a pain in my life."
"Well, what are you worried about?" her friend asked again.
The lady leaned back in her rocking chair and slowly explained her major
worry. "Every close friend I ever had has already died and gone on to heaven.
I'm afraid they're all wondering where I went."

A large, well-established, Canadian lumber camp advertised that they were
looking for a good lumberjack.
The very next day, a skinny little man showed up at the camp with his axe,
and knocked on the head lumberjack's door. The head lumberjack took one look
at the little man and told him to leave.
"Just give me a chance to show you what I can do," said the skinny man.
"Okay, see that giant redwood over there?" said the lumberjack.
"Take your axe and go cut it down."
The skinny man headed for the tree, and in five minutes he was back
knocking on the lumberjack's door. "I cut the tree down," said the man.
The lumberjack couldn't believe his eyes and said, "Where did you get the
skill to chop down trees like that?"
"In the Sahara Forest," replied the puny man.
"You mean the Sahara Desert," said the lumberjack.
The little man laughed and answered back, "Oh sure, that's what they call
it now!"

A woman goes to the doctor for her yearly physical. The nurse starts with
certain basic items.
"How much do you weigh?" she asks.
"115," she says.
The nurse puts her on the scale. It turns out her weight is 140.
The nurse asks, "Your height?"
"5 foot 8," she says.
The nurse checks and sees that she only measures 5' 5".
She then takes her blood pressure, and tells the woman it is very high.
"Of course it's high!" she screams, "When I came in here I was tall and
slender! Now I'm short and fat!"
AND A WORD FROM YOURS TRULY ...
Anyone ever play
Bunko? It is really fun! Last Saturday at the Outdoor Degree at Granite
Falls, the team of Nancy Jorgensen, Kay Smith (PGM), Glynis Tucker and myself
attempted to learn the game and had fun doing it! Now I am 'hooked' and ready
to play! While 16 or so ladies played the game, the rest cut out squares
for quilt making! You will learn more about this project a bit later. The
men were down in the park wherever they go ... and about 300 attended this
Open Air Degree. Afterwards, there was a BBQ and it was great seeing PGM Ann
Gates and her Escort, Bearded Bob on the serving line. Alderwood Chapter was
helping serve the meal, so not only were they there, but saw Margaret
Sherman, and Donna and Bob Miles. It was fun!!!
Later that
evening, we attended a birthday (mine), Anniversary, and Retirement BBQ Party
which was wonderful! Birthday parties brings to mind an interesting one I
had many years ago. The neighborhood decided to surprise me on my special day
... and I got so excited that I went into labor and had our first son early
the next day! The group decided that they weren't going to ever do that
again!
And now it is
time to dust off the golf clubs and try to act like I know what I am doing!
See you on Friday!
Until next time
... Star hugs and happy thoughts.
