Me and the Doctors  … My Affliction

Thought I'd let my doctor check me,
'Cause I didn't feel quite right. . .
All those aches and pains annoyed me
And I couldn't sleep at night.

He could find no real disorder
But he wouldn't let it rest.
What with Medicare and Blue Cross,
We would do a couple tests.

To the hospital he sent me
Though I didn't feel that bad.
He arranged for them to give me
Every test that could be had.

I was fluoroscoped and cystoscoped,
My aging frame displayed.
Stripped, on an ice cold table,
While my gizzards were x-rayed!

I was checked for worms and parasites,
For fungus and the crud,
While they pierced me with long needles
Taking samples of my blood.

Doctors came to check me over,
Probed and pushed and poked around,
And to make sure I was living
They then wired me for sound.

They have finally concluded,
Their results have filled a page.
What I have will someday kill me;
My affliction is OLD AGE!!!

We are having a rest stop this weekend at Indian John, West Bound, I-90 near Cle Elum.  The money raised will go to help pay for Grand Chapter, 2007 at Yakima.  I would like to thank the following members who have already volunteered for one or more shifts; Bill Saunders, Bill & Pam Lee, Dave Trout, Becky & Chuck Aldrich, Janie & Ken Larson, Jerry Clark and Darlene Wiggins.  I and my daughter Chris will be there all weekend in my RV.
    The following shifts are still open for two people;

This Rest Stop helps pay for one day at Grand Chapter as well as some of the decorations, etc.  It is a very worthwhile project for all members of our Grand Chapter.  Brother Orton needs help ... so if you have some extra time on your hands, try volunteering on one of those requested times!  If you find you cannot volunteer and are passing through the area, stop by and have a cookie and a cup of coffee!  And remember that your donation helps all of us have a 'grand' Grand Chapter next June!

Just checked this out this website and read these current averages.  Lowest price of regular gas is:  Greenville, SC at $2.289, National average is $2.999 and the highest price is Kailua, HI at $4.049.  We personally do a lot of fill-ups at Safeway, using their 3 cent and 6 cent discounts and, of course, Costco.  Did you know that Newport has Safeway fuel?  JUMP BACK!

Good news ...
    Connie -
I'd like to report some happy news.  Our daughter Teresa Basile gave birth to our second granddaughter on June 29th.  Her name is Olivia Elise.  She weighed in at 8lbs. 9oz. and was 20" long.  She joins an older (15 month old) sister, Ava.  Teresa and her husband Richard are very proud parents - as are we, the grandparents.  Teresa is a life member of Maple Chapter in Castle Rock.

More good news ... Masonic style ...
Brethren,
I have received an invitation to be the guest speaker at the Lions Club meeting in Brewster. The President of the Lions Club requested than my talk be on Masonry, especially about the Charity and Community service our lodge carries out here in Brewster. He also requested that I include information on our Bikes for Books program as several Lion Club members are interested in knowing how we got this program started and how it works. Evidently the newspaper articles and comments from some Brewster Grade School teachers have caught the interest of the Lions Club.
Wonder how many local Lion Club members know that the founding father of the Lions, Br. Melvin Jones, was also a Mason. I'll guarantee you they will find this fact out tomorrow. (July 18th)

It's a fact ...
Named after the one-eyed giant of Greek myth, the Polyphemus moth is a giant as well, with a wingspan that can reach 5-1/2 inches.  When its wings are folded, it's undersides resemble dead leaves or bark!  You heard it first here ....

Cowans ...
Cowan, s, 1.  A term of contempt; applied to one who does the work of a mason, but has not been regularly bred.  2.  Also used to denote one who guilds dry walls, otherwise denominated a dry diker.  3.  One unacquainted with the secrets of Freemasonry.  'A boat-carpenter, joiner, cowan (or builder of stone without mortar) get 1s at the minimum and good maintenance.'
Sir James A. H. Murray's New English Dictionary says that the word's derivation is unknown.  Albert G. Mackey's Encyclopedia of Freemasonry suggests - without proof - that the word comes from the Middle English coen or comon; early variants of 'common', as in: 'the common people'.

SOME TRIVIA

  1. In July, 1989, afternoon thunderstorms over Florida produced strong wind gusts of 92 mph. in Jacksonville, Florida.  It damaged 13 light planes at Herlong Field.
  2. In 1930, a strong heat wave hit the East, causing an all-time record high was 106° in Washington, DC.  July of 1930 was one of the hottest and direst ever in history of the United Stated.  Towards the end of the month, state records were set in Kentucky with 114°n and Mississippi with 115°.
  3. In July, 1986, Hurricane Estelle passed south of the Hawaiian Islands creating surf of 20-25 feet amplitude.  The large swells resulted from a combination of high tides, full moon and 50 mph winds.
  4. In July, 1886, a hurricane impacted much of Florida.  The rain and wind from the hurricane were felt from Cedar Keys to Jacksonville.  This was the 3rd hurricane in July of 1886 to affect some part of Florida.

LOWRY'S HINTS

HINT 1:  Make a list of rules and adjustments for school days:   Homework schedule, tv schedule, bath time, bed time etc...
    * * * * * * * *
HINT 2:  Label, Label, Label! All items that will be taken to school or worn and taken off at school. Lunch boxes or bags, gym shoes, gym suits, jackets etc.
    * * * * * * * *
HINT 3:  Need A Change?   Paint is cheaper than wallpaper. Use paint effects such as sponge painting, rag rolling, and stenciling to add pattern and interest to your walls.
    * * * * * * * *
HINT 4:  Watering Plants.  A lot of water that goes down the drain can be used to water plants. Water that you use to steam vegetables, cook potatoes or boil eggs can be reused to water your plants.  Also, when you clean out your aquarium you can use that water to water your plants.  Great for the soil.

RECIPES

Grandgirl's Fresh Apple Cake from Georgia
(I made this recipe last weekend for the potluck at HdA's Installation in Brewster last weekend.  Someone asked if I would put it in the STARS so here it is!)
Recipe courtesy Paula Deen

Cake:
Butter, for greasing pan
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
1/4 cup orange juice
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
3 cups peeled and finely chopped apples
1 cup shredded coconut
1 cup chopped pecans

Sauce:
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Generously grease a tube pan.  For the cake: in a large bowl, combine the sugar, eggs, oil, orange juice, flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and vanilla extract; and mix well. Fold apples, coconut, and pecans into batter.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake until a tester comes out clean, about 1 1/2 hours. Shortly before the cake is done, make the sauce: Melt the butter in a large saucepan, stir in the sugar, buttermilk, and baking soda, and bring to a good rolling boil, stirring constantly. Boil for 1 minute. Pour the sauce over the hot cake in the pan as soon as you remove it from the oven. Let stand 1 hour, then turn out onto a rack to cool completely.

Raspberry Barbecue Wings
>From Taste of Home
I came up with this recipe when I got tired of the same old wings. These are baked with onion and garlic, then broiled and basted with a mixture of raspberry jam, barbecue sauce and jalapeno peppers. The sauce is also excellent on pork...and is great for dipping. -Sandra Fisher, Missoula, Montana

2/3 cup barbecue sauce
2/3 cup seedless raspberry jam
3 tablespoons finely chopped onion
1 to 2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and finely chopped
2 teaspoons minced garlic, divided
2 teaspoons Liquid Smoke, optional, divided
1/4 teaspoon salt
15 chicken wings (about 3 pounds)
1 small onion, sliced
1 cup water

DIRECTIONS:  In a small bowl, combine the barbecue sauce, jam, chopped onion, peppers, 1 teaspoon garlic, 1 teaspoon Liquid Smoke if desired and salt; mix well. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.  Cut chicken wings into three sections; discard wing tip section. Place the chicken wings in a greased 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan. Top with sliced onion and remaining garlic. Combine the water and remaining Liquid Smoke if desired; pour over wings. Cover and bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until juices run clear.Transfer wings to a greased broiler pan; brush with sauce. Broil 4-6 in. from the heat for 20-25 minutes, turning and basting every 5 minutes or until wings are well coated. Yield: 2-1/2 dozen or 10 servings.

What is ratatouille?  Ratatouille is a popular dish from the French region of Provence that combines eggplant, tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, zucchini, garlic and herbs — all simmered in olive oil. The vegetables can vary according to the cook. They can be cooked together, or cooked separately and then combined and heated briefly together. Ratatouille can be served hot, cold or at room temperature, either as a side dish or as an appetizer with bread or crackers.

JOKES ..

You admit having broken into the dress shop four times?" asked the judge.
    "Yes," answered the suspect.
    "And what did you steal?"
"A dress, Your Honor," replied the subject.
"One dress?" echoed the judge. "But you admit breaking in four times!"
"Yes, Your Honor," sighed the suspect. "But three times my wife didn't like the color."

My friend, the manager of a grocery store, nabbed a shoplifter in the act. He was escorting the suspect to the office in the front of the store (near the cash registers), when the shoplifter broke from his grip and tried to run.
After a scuffle, my friend pinned him against the wall and looked up to see a number of surprised customers staring at him.
"Everything's fine, Folks," he reassured them. "This guy just tried to go through the express line with more than ten items.

Soon after our high-tech company moved into a new building, we had trouble with the elevators. A manager got stuck between floors and, after some door banging, finally attracted attention. His name was taken and rescue promised.
It took two hours before the elevator mechanic arrived and got the manager out. When he returned to his desk, he found this note from his efficient secretary: "The elevator people called and will be here in two hours."

Why Men Wear Earrings ...
A man is at work one day when he notices that his co-worker is wearing an earring.  This man knows his co-worker to be a normally conservative fellow, and is curious about his sudden change in 'fashion sense.'
The man walks up to him and says:  'I didn't know you were into earrings.'
'Don't make such a big deal, it's only an earring,' he replies sheepishly.
His friend falls silent for a few minutes, but then his curiosity prods him to say:  'So, how long have you been wearing one?
'Ever since my girl-friend found it in my truck.'

Gotta say that the weather is nicer now that it is cooler, but seems like autumn is on its way!  The other morning it was around 34°.  WOW!  My tomato crop is never going to make it.  I only have a few plants, but we have had fresh tomatoes several evenings.  They aren't beefsteak like many of you raise, but with our short growing season, it is the best we can do.  I am also raising zucchini and last evening I made two loaves of zucchini bread and what a disaster that baking episode was.  Food Network would be ashamed!  Anyway, Ted threw them out to the chickens and I am not sure they could even eat them!
We do have sunflowers growing everywhere as our resident chipmunk planted seeds in every dirt bed he could find.  But what a pretty picture now that they are beginning to bloom.  Haven't seen the little varmint lately.  Hope he didn't get into the mouse bait!
Until next time ... Star hugs and happy thoughts.
