THE STARS OF WASHINGTON
Wednesday, July 5th, 2006
Just read a statement from my email friend Sharon Lee from SC who said and I quote: 'I went to bed and about 10 minutes later there was a tap on my shoulder.... it was my behind wanting to get into bed. Now that's tired! LOL' Well that is how I have been ... absolutely exhausted! I never realized how stressful being on the Registration Committee was until 100 plus come in after we opened on Sunday to register ... and then the printer 'failed' several times. I ran out of extra forms and was able to use the wireless in the Dome and print off extra copies of the registration form off of our website until someone in the dome thought that we were stealing some of their 'wireless' time! Good grief! I could have found a Starbucks and used their connection for nothing, but who had time!! So then it was quickly design another page ... and get it printed! Thanks to Al Jorgensen and Don Loughmiller for all the help in getting everything working once again! Thanks, too, to all the members who were patient in waiting for their badges, etc. A great big thank you, too, to my co-heart on this project, Darlene Russell. Couldn't have done it without her nor without the able assistance of the rest of the workers she had lined up to work. And I just gotta thank Nancy Jorgensen who helped me personally! When things got a bit stressful and HOT (while the air conditioner was hay-wire), she would come over, put her hand on my shoulder and tell me with her kind and patient voice, that everything would be alright! A true friend!
And now with the long overdue STARS ... a wee bit late with the holiday wishes ... but the thought was there!
HAPPY
4th of JULYWhen a bunch of fellows from Boston held a big party with tea,
That's where your cradle was started and they called it Liberty.
At Bunker Hill could be heard among the hues and the cries,
"Steady men don't fire, until you see the whites of their eyes."
So when those fellows got together again to draw up and sign a form,
They called it a Declaration and that's how you were born.
The road has been bumpy and at times you've had to fight
So that your sons and daughters can share their God given right.
You've held out your hand to the poor, given aid to the aged and sick,
Yet you walk softly while carrying a big stick.
Those stalwarts at Valley Forge suffered hardship and privation,
So men could be Free to live in this mighty Nation.
When this Great Land by strife was torn, where brother fought against brother,
It mattered little on which side they died, you extended your hand to one
another.
Those that charged up that hill at San Juan to everlasting Glory and Fame,
Were spurred on by that fervent cry, '"Remember the battleship Maine."
When you summon your children they come from city and R. F. D.
To stand shoulder to shoulder in the fight against tyranny.
They have fought in the colds of Ancient Lands and in steamy jungles' heat,
So that the World will know that Free men cannot be beat.
When old friends beckoned, you sent your children 'Over There'
Where they carried Freedom's ideals, into the enemy's lair.
That Star Spangled Banner atop Suribachi did wave,
Put there by men from the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.
There have been others like Chosin, Khe Sahn and Desert Storm,
Where Brave men sailed forth whenever Freedom's ideals needed to be reborn.
When friends have asked, "Can you help?" and you say, "I can,"
I'm that Red, White and Blue, top hat man, you call "Uncle Sam."
So today its Happy Birthday to you, a cause for great celebration,
That began way back when those fellows got together, and signed that
Declaration!

PRAYERS NEEDED
As many of you know, Sister Gerry Shafer, PGM, was unable to attend our Grand Session due to illness. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. She was released from St. Peter's Hospital in Olympia yesterday where she was recovering from two infections. I received an email from Sister Beth Eng who had visited Sister Gerry in the hospital, and according to Beth, Sister Gerry has sent her love to all and that she was truly sorry to miss Grand Chapter as she so wanted to be there for all of her Sisters and Brothers.
Please remember Sister Gerry in your prayers and ask for a speedy recovery! And, while speaking of illnesses and prayers, let's say a special one for Brother Bruce, also. He isn't up to par either ... and know that he must miss his 'care-giver' VERY much. For cards:

MESSAGES FROM MY MAIL BOX
Canada Day ... July 1st!
'God keep our land glorious and free... O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.' Canada, a land of great natural beauty and beautiful, warm, welcoming people. On Canada Day, reach out to all your friends, family members and acquaintances and wish them a day filled with fun and laughter. Say Vive Le Canada !
Canadian National Holiday, celebrated on July 1st. It marks the anniversary of the unification of Upper and Lower Canada (what are now Ontario and Quebec), New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia as the Dominion of Canada. This union was affected by passage on July 1, 1867, of the British North America Act. Formerly known as Dominion Day, the name was changed to Canada Day in 1982 when the constitution was revised. The day is marked throughout Canada by parades, fireworks, and the display of flags.
Hope all those North of the Border had a great HAPPY CANADA DAY!

Marble Queen ...
We would like to let everyone know our news: Our daughter, Melissa Ashwood, WON the National Marbles Tournament in Wildwood, NJ on June 22. She gets to reign as Queen for a year, and then will be inducted into the National Marbles Hall of Fame next year. This came with a $2000 college scholarship. We are soooooooo proud of her. She had 4 very good days of tournament play, and had a lot of fun doing it! There's all kinds of news, pictures and even a video on the Internet, if anyone wants to do a Google search (Melissa Ashwood or National Marbles).
Thanks a bunch for listening to us 'brag'!

DISCUSSION ... GRAND CHAPTER REGISTRATION FEES
QUESTION: A few months back one of the Grand Officers in New Mexico made
the statement to me that we need to raise the registration fee's for our
grand chapter. I was wondering what all the other grand jurisdictions / grand
chapters charged for their registration fee's. Sure would like an input from
everyone just to see how we stand with other areas. Thanks in advance for your
time.

MAINE: Maine raised its registration fee to $10 about three years ago.
This still does not cover the complete cost of holding the Grand Chapter
Session. Also, the attendance hasn't dropped from that increase.
Ideally, I'd like pre registration to be one price with at the door registration
slightly higher. It would make it easier for me in preplanning of material to
have ready.
We also changed from the ribbon badges to the reusable plastic holders and I
print the badges in house. This is now saving us about $300 a year. Additional
work for me, but the savings is wonderful!!!!

In a secondhand store in Vancouver, a friend of mine found an old
black-and-white print of two famous Scotsmen, Robert Burns, poet, and Sir Walter
Scott, novelist. Both men were Masons and wore Masonic regalia with their
elegant 18th-century clothes. The caption beneath the full-length portrait read:
twa scots brothers. My friend pointed at the print and asked the lady in charge
who the men were. She studied the portrait for a moment before suggesting,
"They're probably old-fashioned stewards for TWA."

LOWRY'S HINTS
HINT 1: Black Pepper is not only a seasoning: Stop colors from running by adding a teaspoon of black pepper with the detergent to the first wash cycle when you are washing cottons.
* * * * * * * * * *
HINT 2: If you don't have a de-greaser handy, try this.... Clean grease
from hands, by rubbing shaving cream between your hands and it will dissolve
grime
without water.
* * * * * * * * * *
HINT 3: Most grocery stores will slash their meat and deli products at the end of the day. So it's best to shop at night. You could cut your meat and cheese bill by 10% and save on the average of $120 annually.

Quinoa and Shrimp Salad
Quinoa is a grain-like food, rich in protein and becomes light and fluffy when cooked. It makes a wonderful substitute for rice in pilafs.
1 cup uncooked quinoa
2 cup water
1/4 tsp table salt
4 oz green snap beans, fresh or frozen, cut in 1 1/2-inch lengths, steamed
(about 1 rounded cup)
1 medium sweet red pepper(s), cored, seeded and chopped
12 oz shrimp, medium-size, cooked, peeled
3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 Tbsp fat-free chicken broth
1 Tbsp olive oil
2 tsp fresh dill, minced
1/4 tsp table salt, or more to taste
1/4 tsp black pepper, or more to taste
Place quinoa in a fine mesh sieve and hold under cold, running water to rinse well; drain. (Or you can put quinoa in a sheet of cheesecloth, run water through it and then let it drain).
Bring 2 cups of water and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to a boil in a small saucepan; stir in quinoa and bring to a boil again. Reduce heat to low, cover and cook until tender, about 15 minutes. Uncover and remove pan from heat to cool.
Combine green beans, red pepper and shrimp in a large salad bowl; stir in cooled quinoa. Combine lemon juice, broth, oil, dill, remaining 1/4 teaspoon of salt and black pepper in a cup; stir well. Pour oil mixture over salad and toss gently but well. Yields about 1 1/2 cups per serving.
NOTE: Capers can add a delightful tangy flavor to this salad. Skip the dill and add 2 tablespoons of capers to the recipe instead, if desired. Because capers are salty, taste the salad before adding the last 1/4 teaspoon of salt – you may not need it.
Weight Watchers: 6 points.

HELOISE
Removing Brass and Copper Tarnish: On some items, you can use this homemade solution. Mix the following together: flour, salt and white vinegar or lemon juice. Use enough to make a paste, then rub on, rinse extremely well, and dry.
Make Your Own Taco Seasoning Mix: To make the same amount as one envelope of commercial seasoning, mix 2 teaspoons of chili powder, salt, pepper, and onion powder to your taste, and a dash of crushed dried oregano.
Storing Coolers: After a picnic or camping, clean, wipe out and let the cooler dry completely. Pour some baking soda into the bottom to prevent musty smells. Place a piece of cardboard between the rim and the lid so the cover doesn't seal tightly. That way there can be a bit of air circulation.
Avoiding Kitchen Fire Hazards: Plug most appliances directly into wall sockets. Don't use extension cords because some appliances like slow cookers might not heat properly and the cords can become a fire hazard. Unplug them when you are done. (My thought … DON’T COOK!)
Make Your Own Steak Sauce: This simple recipe is amazingly tasty: Mix 1/2 cup of Worcestershire sauce with 1/2 cup of ketchup. Store in the refrigerator and put on any type of meats.
JOKE ..
I've been married 40 years, took a look at my wife one day and said, "Honey,
40 years ago, we had a cheap apartment, a cheap car, slept on a sofa bed and
watched a 10 inch black and white TV, but I got to sleep every night with a 25
year old blonde. Now, we have a nice house, nice car, big bed and plasma screen
TV, but I'm sleeping with a 65 year old woman. It seems to me that you are not
holding up your side of things."
My wife is a very reasonable woman. She told me to go out and find a 25 year old
blonde, and she would make sure that I would once again be living in a cheap
apartment, driving a cheap car and sleeping on a sofa bed... CRISIS RESOLVED!

I've sure gotten old. I've had 2 By-pass surgeries. A hip replacement, new
knees. Fought prostate cancer, and diabetes. I'm half blind, can't hear anything
quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, I'm
winded, and subject to blackouts.
I have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation, hardly feel my hands and feet
anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends. But... Thank
goodness, I still have my driver's license.

One rainy evening, my husband, John, and I emerged from a restaurant only to
find that he had locked the keys in the car. He insisted he could open the door
with a wire coat hanger, so we went back to the restaurant to get one. There
were none to be found.
John then ran to a department store a quarter-mile away and returned with a
hanger. After a few attempts, he got the door open and we climbed in. As we sat
there, soaked and cold, he stuck the hanger under his seat.
With a smug grin, he said, "Now if this ever happens again, I'll have one."

Tom was so excited about his promotion to Vice President of the company he
worked for and kept bragging about it to his wife for weeks on end.
Finally she couldn't take it any longer, and told him, "Listen, it means
nothing, they even have a vice president of peas at the grocery store!"
"Really?" he said. Not sure if this was true or not, Tom decided to call the
grocery store. A clerk answered and Tom said, "Can I please talk to the Vice
President of peas?"
The clerk replied, "Canned or frozen?"
AND A WORD FROM YOURS TRULY ...
Pat Foster shared this card with me and it is absolutely beautiful. Hopefully, it will play for you. Check out all the state's flowers.. Have a safe and happy 4th of July
. http://www.jacquielawson.com/viewcard.asp?code=MZ45096597.And another great website
http://alighthouse.com/flag.htm ... and includes the voice of Johnny Cash! Great. Thanks Sandy! And now without any further ado ... I am going to get this publication out into cyberspace. I have my three salads made for the Masonic Square and Compass Jamboree beginning tomorrow ... but still have some ironing to do so it can get wrinkled in transport. The laundry is finally caught up ... and the sheets, etc. have dried on the clothesline amid the occasional surprise rain showers! We sure had a dozy of a thunder/lightening show last evening. God helped us out with the 4th of July fireworks!!! It was totally awesome.
I am borrowing a saying from Thomas Jefferson via my NOB friend, Lowry May!
'The winds that blow through the wide sky in these mounts, the winds that
sweep from Canada to Mexico, from the Pacific to the Atlantic - have always
blown on free men.' It says it all! Do hope that you had a happy 4th of July!
Star hugs and happy thoughts.
