News from JRT ...
Greenwood's Deputy Instructor Bill Shortt had the pleasure of
presenting an apple to Past Patron Dale Good and
announcing that he is the new Deputy Instructor from John Rex Thompson
#220 for 2006-07. Worthy Matron Beth R. Eng had the distinct pleasure to
open an envelope to announce that
PM Karin Whipple who is currently Associate Conductress will be the Page
to the Distinguished Guests. Congratulations to both of them! John Rex
Thompson Chapter wishes them the very best!
(P.S. Our family visited our newest grandbaby, Josephine Marie
Johnson, and her 2 year old sister, Roslyn Rae, on June 3rd. Our son,
Brandon, begged to hold baby Jo-Jo, and happily held her longer than I
did! Thank you to Eastern Star Scholarship Comm. and the Scottish Rite
Scholarship Comm. for the scholarships awarded to Brandon. He has junior
status at Seattle U, major: Political Science. Our family appreciates
the monetary help immensely.)
P.S.S. Karin Whipple is a great-grandmother now! So I guess Charlline
Larson is a great-great-grandmother !!

Things I learned in Texas and Arkansas
-
Armadillos sleep in the middle of the road with all four feet in the air.
-
Raccoons will test your melon crop, and let you know when they are ripe.
-
If it grows, it will stick you. If it crawls, it will bite you!
-
Nothing will kill a mesquite tree.
-
There are valid reasons some people put razor wire around their house.
-
A tractor is NOT an all terrain vehicle. They do get stuck.
-
Onced and twiced are words.
-
Coldbeer is one word.
-
People actually grow and eat okra.
-
Green grass DOES burn.
-
When you live in the country you don't have to buy a dog. City people
drop them off at your front gate in the middle of the night.
-
The sound of coyotes howling at night only sounds good for the first few weeks.
-
When a buzzard sits on the fence and stares at you, it's time to see a
doctor.
-
Fix-in-to is one word.
-
There ain't no such thing as "lunch". There is only breakfast, dinner
and then there's supper.
-
"Sweetened ice tea" is appropriate for all meals, and you start drinking
it when you are two.
-
"Backwards and forwards" means I know everything about you.
-
"(Ted's favorite
saying ...) Jeet?" is actually a phrase meaning, "Did you eat?"
-
You don't have to wear a watch because it doesn't matter what time it
is. You work until you're done, or it's too dark to see.
-
You measure distance in minutes or hours.
-
You can switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day.
-
Stores don't have bags. They have sacks.
-
You see cars with the engine running in the Wal-mart parking lot with no
one in them, no matter what time of the year.
-
All the festivals across the state are named after a fruit or a vegetable.
-
You install security lights on your house and garage, and leave both unlocked.
-
You carry jumper cables for your own car.
-
You know what "cow tipping" and "snipe hunting" are.
-
You only have four spices in your kitchen: Salt, Pepper, Ketchup, and Tabasco.
-
The local papers cover national and international news on one page, but
require six pages to cover Friday night high school football.
-
The first day of deer season is a state holiday.
-
You know which leaves make good toilet paper.
-
You find 100 degrees a "tad" warm.
-
The four seasons are: Almost summer, summer, still summer and Christmas.
-
Going to Wal-mart is a favorite past-time known as "goin Wal-Martin" or
"off to Wally-world."
-
You describe the first cool snap (below 70 degrees) as good chili-eatin' weather.
-
A carbonated soft drink isn't a soda, cola, or pop....It's a Coke regardless of brand or flavor.

HINT 1: Transfer your jelly to a small plastic squeeze
bottle~no more messy, sticky jars or knives! This also works well for
homemade salad dressing! It's also
easier for kids!
* * * * * * * * *
HINT 2: Onions - Once used and cut in half, rub the
leftover side with butter. This way it will keep fresh longer.
* * * * * * * * *
HINT 3: Try baby wipes...They really work! Baby wipes are
miracle-workers on carpet stains, from motor oil to blood, they remove
almost anything!
* * * * * * * * *
HINT 4: Ink Stains: The best way I have found to get out
ink stains is to put rubbing alcohol on the stain - it disappears! This
must be done before washing. For ink on the wall, wipe with bleach and it
will disappear.
* * * * * * * * *
HINT 5: Save Gas: Keep your windows closed when traveling
at high speeds. Open windows cause additional drag and lower your gas
mileage. At high speeds, an open window can use more gas than many air
conditioners (especially if they are on a low setting). Check your tire
pressure. Over-inflated tires can actually
reduce your fuel efficiency, so don't over-fill.

Supreme Spaghetti Salad
>From Quick Cooking
In Salem, Virginia, Wendy Byrd relies on bottled salad dressing to
perk up pasta and fresh vegetables in this swift salad that costs 43¢ a
serving. "It's a delicious addition to any meal or picnic," she relates.
1 package (1 pound) spaghetti, broken into 4-inch pieces
1 bottle (16 ounces) zesty Italian salad dressing
1 large cucumber, diced
1 large tomato, seeded and diced
1-1/2 cups fresh broccoli florets
2 tablespoons shredded Parmesan cheese
2 teaspoons Salad Supreme Seasoning*
Cook spaghetti according to package directions. Drain and rinse in cold
water. Place spaghetti in a large serving bowl; add the remaining
ingredients and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 45
minutes. Yield: 12 servings. Editor's Note: This recipe was tested with
McCormick's Salad Supreme Seasoning. Look for it in the spice aisle of your
grocery store. P.S. This is a great salad for a cool dinner. My nephew's
girlfriend made one similar to this a while back and everyone loved it. It
didn't last long.

Question of the Week: What is a muffuletta?
A specialty of New Orleans, a muffuletta
[moof-fuh-LEHT-tuh] is a hero-style sandwich which consists of a
round loaf of crusty Italian bread, split and filled with layers of sliced
provolone, Genoa salami and ham topped with "olive salad," a chopped mixture
of green, unstuffed olives, pimientos, celery, garlic, cocktail onions,
capers, oregano, parsley, olive oil, red-wine vinegar, salt and pepper. Cut
Giada's
Muffulettas into wedges and serve as a
pre-game appetizer at your next tailgating bash.
SOME JOKES
An elderly Floridian called 911 on her cell phone to report that her
car has been broken into. She is hysterical as she explains her situation
to the dispatcher: "They've stolen the stereo, the steering wheel, the
brake pedal and even the accelerator!" she cried.
The dispatcher said, "Stay calm. An officer is on the way."
A few minutes later, the officer radios in. "Disregard." He says. "She
got in the back-seat by mistake

A teacher was
giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter
clearer, she said, "Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you
know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face."
"Yes," the class said.
"Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary
position the blood doesn't run into my feet?"
A little fellow shouted, "Cause your feet ain't empty."

While I'm not
sure of the procedure now, when I was in the Navy, every so often, you got
umpteen shots, whether you needed them or not. The carrier pilot in front of
me as we passed thru the line asked for a drink of water after receiving
what seemed to be at least a dozen different needles.
The Corpsman asked if he was dizzy.
"No, not at all." he replied. "I just wanna see if I'm still
water-tight."

Correcting a
Runny Casserole:
Depending on the
type of casserole, you can thicken it with instant mashed potatoes, shredded
cheese or crushed potato chips. For example, add grated Parmesan cheese to
an Italian casserole.
-
Easy Red-Chili
Dip:
Make this sauce for veggies or to put on a baked potato: Mix 1/2 cup of sour
cream, 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise, 1 teaspoon of chili powder and 1/2
teaspoon of ground cumin in a blender until smooth. Refrigerate in a sealed
container for a few days.

Protecting
Marble Table Tops:
If you are worried
about possible permanent beverage stains occurring during a party, prepare
for it in advance: Apply an extra layer of paste wax before the party and
place an attractive runner over the top of the table.
AND A WORD FROM YOURS TRULY ...
Grand Lodge is history ... but what a
great time we had at Ocean Shores. As busy as we were, we still had enough
time to walk on the beach at low tide and breakfast with a close friend of
nearly 50 years. Ted and I used to visit she and her first husband when we
were dating! I would suppose that Harry was one of Ted's very best friends
... until his untimely death resulting from an automobile accident. Claudia
and their four children moved back to Washington to be with her parents ...
later marrying again! And now he has died, too, of cancer. So Claudia
spends her time ... visiting her children in all four corners of the USA
(including Alaska) and always vacations at her condo in Hawaii during
Thanksgiving time.
Saturday after the close of Grand
Lodge, the Masons marched in the community's parade! Not only were the
Masons there, but so was the Masonic float. It was a real delightful
parade!
And now we are busy finalizing all the
badges for registration! Remember that they will be filed by the Chapter
you have listed on your registration form. If you belong to two Chapters,
it will be by the first one you listed! All out-of-Jurisdiction , Past
Grands of this and other Jurisdictions, and our WGM and WGP will pick up
their badges at the Distinguished Guests section of registration. Other
members, Grand Officers, Escorts, etc. will pick their badges up according
to their Chapters. Hope it will not be too confusing! I thank those who
did the Pre-Registration as it certainly helps!!! I have heard that several
thought they were registering on-line, but that doesn't work. They need to
be delivered to me! And now that Grand Chapter is getting close, I wouldn't
mail anymore registration forms to me after tomorrow. Just a warning ... if
we are swamped, it could be a wait for your badges at Grand Chapter. Just
bear with us. That's why pre-registration, huh! Remember to visit us, too,
at the registration table for application forms for the Eastern Star
Journal. Sister Jo Bornholdt, Worthy Grand Martha, and Chairman and Editor
of the ESJ, has sent some magazines to share with those who have not seen
them. Washington isn't doing too well with their subscriptions ... so let's
change that ... OK?
It is now after 8 PM ... a bit stormy
(sky is black as we just had a whoopee wind and rain storm)! The Wood Ducks
have made their nightly pilgrimage up to our chicken house for their daily
quota of grain! They are so cute ... and yes! They do waddle when they
walk!
Star hugs
and happy thoughts. See you at Grand Chapter!
