Mother's Day
This is for the mothers who have sat up all night with
sick toddlers in their arms, wiping up barf laced with Oscar Mayer
wieners and cherry Kool-Aid saying, "It's okay honey, Mommy's
here." Who have sat in rocking chairs for hours on end soothing
crying babies who can't be comforted? This is for all the mothers
who show up at work with spit-up in their hair and milk stains on
their blouses and diapers in their purse. For all the mothers who
run carpools and make cookies and sew Halloween costumes. And all
the mothers who don’t! This is for the mothers who gave birth to
babies they'll never see. And the mothers who took those babies and
gave them homes. This is for the mothers whose priceless art
collections are hanging on their refrigerator doors. And for all the
mothers who froze their buns on metal bleachers at football or
soccer games instead of watching from the warmth of their cars, so
that when their kids asked, "Did you see me, Mom?" they could say,
"Of course, I wouldn't have missed it for the world," and mean it.
This is for all the mothers who yell at their kids in the grocery
store and swat them in despair when they stomp their feet and scream
for ice cream before dinner. And for all the mothers who count to
ten instead, but realize how child abuse happens.
This is for all the mothers who sat down with their children and
explained all about making babies. And for all the (grand) mothers
who wanted to, but just couldn't find the words. This is for all the
mothers who go hungry, so their children can eat. For all the
mothers who read "Goodnight, Moon" twice a night for a year. And
then read it again. "Just one more time." This is for all the
mothers who taught their children to tie their shoelaces before they
started school. And for all the mothers who opted for Velcro
instead. This is for all the mothers who teach their sons to cook
and their daughters to sink a jump shot.
This is for every mother whose head turns automatically when a
little voice calls "Mom?" in a crowd, even though they know their
own offspring are at home -- or even away at college. This is for
all the mothers who sent their kids to school with stomach aches
assuring them they'd be just FINE once they got there, only to get
calls from the school nurse an hour later asking them to please pick
them up. Right away. This is for mothers whose children have gone
astray, who can't find the words to reach them. This is for all the
step-mothers who raised another woman's child or children, and gave
their time, attention, and love... sometimes totally unappreciated!
For all the mothers who bite their lips until they bleed when their
14-year-olds dye their hair green. For all the mothers of the
victims of recent school shootings, and the mothers of those who did
the shooting.
For the mothers of the survivors, and the mothers who sat in
front of their TVs in horror, hugging their child who just came home
from school, safely.
This is for all the mothers who taught their children to be
peaceful, and now pray they come home safely from a war. What makes
a good Mother anyway? Is it patience? Compassion? Broad hips? The
ability to nurse a baby, cook dinner, and sew a button on a shirt,
all at the same time? Or is it in her heart? Is it the ache you feel
when you watch your son or daughter disappear down the street,
walking to school alone for the very first time? The jolt that takes
you from sleep to dread, from bed to crib at 2 A.M. to put your hand
on the back of a sleeping baby? The panic, years later, that comes
again at 2 A.M. when you just want to hear their key in the door and
know they are safe again in your home? Or the need to flee from
wherever you are and hug your child when you hear news of a fire, a
car accident, a child dying?
The
emotions of motherhood are universal and so our thoughts are for
young mothers stumbling through diaper changes and sleep
deprivation... And mature mothers learning to let go. For working
mothers and stay-at-home mothers. Single mothers and married
mothers. Mothers with money, mothers without.
This is for you all. For all of us. Hang in there. In the end we can
only do the best we can. Tell them every day that we love them. And
pray!

Sadness ...
Last Thursday Eve. my daughter presented me with my fifty year pin,
which I will proudly wear and she also informed the Chapter that I had
again been
appointed as a Grand Chapter Committee member---Grand Historian. This
will be my second try at this, and now I will get to finish reading the
history of our Grand Chapter in Washington. However, I phoned
Margaret Pollak, present Grand Historian, of Waconda Chapter, to
inform her that when she was through gathering this years information she
could return the books to me. She told me her beloved husband, William
had passed away last Sunday, and services were to be held today. Our
thoughts and prayers are with her.

RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS
- Red-winged Blackbirds diets’ differ between male and females, with
females consuming more weed seeds and less waste corn than males.
- Red-wing Blackbirds will increase their feeding rate to match the other
blackbirds around them, even if they are already well feed.
- Red-wing Blackbirds learn which new foods to try by carefully watching
what the other blackbirds are eating.
- Red-winged Blackbirds will often declare war on the Marsh Wrens in their
territory. Both species will eat each other's eggs.
- During the breeding season, Red-winged Blackbirds eat mostly insects,
including dragonflies, damselflies, beetles, butterflies, and moths. In the
winter, they switch to mostly seeds and grains.
- Red-winged Blackbirds often use a feeding technique known as gaping. By
forcibly spreading open their bill in crevices, they expose and seize
insects that are hiding under sticks and stones, or in the bases of leaves.
- Red-winged Blackbirds are one of the most polygamous of all bird
species. They have been observed to have as many as 15 females nesting in
the territory of a single male. On average, a single male has roughly five
females.
- Red-winged Blackbirds fiercely defend their territory during the
breeding season. Over a quarter of the male’s time is spent vigorously
defending his territory from other males and predators. They do not hesitate
to attack much larger animals, including people.
- Red-winged Blackbirds can form huge roosts during the winter. Up to a
million birds will stay in one area at night. During the daytime, they will
disperse up to 50 miles away in search of food.
- Red-winged Blackbirds commonly share their winter roosts with other
blackbird species, Common Grackles, Brown-headed Cowbirds and European
Starlings.
- Large flocks of Red-winged and other blackbirds can cause wide-scale
damage to sunflower, corn and rice crops. The control measures used to
reduce this crop damage are now the major source of adult mortality in
Red-winged Blackbirds.
- Male Red-winged Blackbirds return north in the spring ahead of the
females and migrate south after the females in the fall.
- Female Red-winged Blackbirds build their nest in four stages. Initially
they weave together several supporting pieces of vegetation and then
intertwine the walls of the nest onto these supports. The nest cup is then
lined with mud and the final step is to line the nest with a layer of fine
grasses.

LOWRY'S HINTS
HINT 1: Check Your Battery Terminals: If battery
terminals are heavily corroded, the quickest and easiest way to clean them
is to pour carbonated soft
drink over them. It will eat the corrosion away. Baking soda mixed with
water will also do the trick.
* * * * * * * * *
HINT 2: Bumper Stickers....No Way Remove old bumper
stickers with lighter fluid. Soak stickers for a few minutes then gently
remove with a razor blade
* * * * * * * * *
HINT 3: HELPING YOUR LAWN MOWER LAST: Before mowing
your lawn, spray the underside of your mower with cooking spray to keep
grass clippings from
sticking. A buildup of debris can prevent the mower from cutting
properly and encourage rust.
* * * * * * * * *
HINT 4: A can of coffee will stay fresher longer if
kept in the refrigerator
* * * * * * * * *
HINT 5: To prevent boiled potatoes from sticking to
the grater, always apply little oil on the grater.
* * * * * * * * *
HINT 6: SAVING ON WATER - THOSE LITTLE DRIPS ADD UP!
Did you know that a leaky water faucet that drips one drop of water
per second will waste 60 gallons of water if left to drip for a
week? How much is that in a month - or a year? Really boggles your
mind, doesn't it? Think about how that could effect your bill and how
much is getting wasted!! So, fix those water drips and leaks as soon
as they occur to avoid water waste.

12" Skillet Grill. The perfect barbecue replacement for
quick, low fat grilling on your stove top. It's just like a
skillet, but with heavy ribs crossing the bottom that lift
meats, fish, or veggies out of the fat. If you like to
marinate, the drippings burn slightly when they hit the pan
and infuse your food with a barbecue-like aroma - plus you
get those grill-like markings.

COOKING TIP: Grilling Fish
A moderately hot fire is best for cooking seafood.
Always start with a well oiled grid to prevent the
delicate skin of the fish from sticking. Support more
delicate pieces of fish in a hinged, fish-shaped wire
basket for easier turning or handling. Frequently baste
steaks and fillets while grilling to prevent them from
drying out. Marinating fish an hour before grilling also
helps keep it moist. Apply the 10-minute rule for proper
doneness.
Use indirect heat for whole fish by banking hot coals
on either side of the barbecue or preheat gas or electric
grill. Oil fish well and place in an oiled fish basket.
Cook, covered, 10 to 12 minutes per inch of thickness,
turning halfway through cooking time.

Using Onion Powder: About 1/4 teaspoon of powder equals 1/4 cup of
freshly chopped onion. Sprinkle it on meats and chops. It will add zip to
salad dressings and vegetables too. Less is better, so don't go
overboard.

Quick Repair For Small Wall Holes: If you take nails out of the
wall, you can fill the holes in white plaster walls with a paste of
crushed aspirin and water or white regular toothpaste pushed into the
hole.

How to Clean an LCD Screen: To remove smudges or fingerprints,
wipe with a soft, cotton cloth. If you can still see them, pour a small
amount of 90 percent isopropyl rubbing alcohol onto the cloth and wipe
over the screen. Never wipe with paper towels because they can scratch
this kind of screen.

Check the Inside Your Dishwasher Often: You may be surprised at
how much grease and gunk can accumulate in the bottom of the dishwasher.
Use a thick sponge or wad of paper towels to clean it periodically. The
dishwasher will work better if it's properly maintained.
SOME JOKES
Rick, fresh out of accounting school, went to a interview for a good
paying job. The company boss asked various questions about him and his
education, but then asked him, "What is three times seven?"
"22," Rick replied. After he left, he double-checked it on his
calculator (he *knew* he should have taken it to the interview!) and
realized he wouldn't get the job.
About two weeks later, he got a letter that said he was hired for
the job! He was not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, but was still
very curious. The next day, he went in and asked why he got the job,
even though he got such a simple question wrong.
The boss shrugged and said, "Well, you were the closest."

Scientists have shown that the moon is moving away at a tiny,
although measurable distance from the earth every year.
If you do the math, you can calculate that 85 million years ago the
moon was orbiting the earth at a distance of about 35 feet from the
earth's surface.
This would explain the death of the dinosaurs. The tallest ones,
anyway.

God Said, "Adam, I want you to do something for me."
Adam said, "Gladly, Lord, what do You want me to do?"
God said, "Go down into that valley." Adam said, "What's a valley?"
God explained it to him.
Then God said, "Cross the river." Adam said, "What's a river?"! God
explained that to him, and then said, "Go over to the hill......."
Adam said, "What is a hill?" So, God explained to Adam what a hill
was.
He told Adam, "On the other side of the hill you will find a cave"
Adam said, "What's a cave?"
After God explained, he said, "In the cave you will find a Woman."
Adam said, "What's a woman?" So God explained that to him, too.
Then, God said, "I want you to reproduce." Adam said, "How do I do
that?" God first said (under his breath), "Geez....."! And then, just
like everything else, God explained that to Adam, as well.
So, Adam goes down into the valley, across the river, and over the
hill, into the cave, and finds the woman. Then, in about five minutes,
he was back. God, his patience wearing thin, said angrily, "What is it
now?"
And Adam said: "What's a headache?

Jerry is
recovering from day surgery when a nurse asks him how he is feeling.
"I'm ok
but I didn't like the four-letter-word the doctor used in surgery," he
answered.
"What
did he say," asked the nurse.
"OOPS!"
AND A WORD FROM YOURS TRULY ...
Not too many words from me this
afternoon ... am busy trying to take advantage of the sunshine ...
something we don't see very often. Right now, the clouds are starting to
build up and perhaps more rain? We had snow yesterday! Didn't stick,
thankfully, here ... but who knows what happened in the hills. So ...
gotta get my sheets in off the clothes line ... so until next time ... we
need to keep a smile on our face and love in our hearts!
