Motherhood
For those who are lucky to still be blessed with your Mom
this is beautiful. For those who aren't, this is even more
beautiful.
The young mother set her foot on the path of life. "Is this the
long way?" she asked.
And the guide said "Yes, and the way is hard. And you will be
old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than
the beginning.
But the young mother was happy, and she would not believe
that anything could be better than these years. So she played with
her children, she fed them and bathed them, and taught them how to
tie their shoes and ride a bike and reminded them to feed the dog
and do their homework and brush their teeth. The sun shone on
them, and the young other cried, "Nothing will ever be lovelier than
this."
Then the
nights came, and the storms, and the path was sometimes dark, and
the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother drew them
close
and covered them with her arms, and the children said, "Mother, we
are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come." And the
morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and the children climbed
and grew weary, and the mother was weary. But at all times she
said to the children, "A little patience and we are there."
So the
children climbed, and as they climbed they learned to weather the
storms. And with this, she gave them strength to face the world.
Year after year, she showed them compassion, understanding, hope,
but most of all unconditional love. And when they reached the top
they said, "Mother, we would not have done it without you."
The days
went on, and the weeks and the months and the years, and the mother
grew old and she became little and bent. But her children were
tall and strong, and walked with courage. And the mother, when she
lay down at night, looked up at the stars and said, "This is a
better day than the last, for my children have learned so much and
are now passing these traits on to their children." And when the
way became rough for her, they lifted her, and gave her their
strength, just as she had given them hers. One day they came to
a hill, and beyond the hill, they could see a shining road and
golden gates flung wide.
And mother said: "I have reached the end of my journey. And now
I know the end is better than the beginning, for my children can
walk with dignity and pride, with their heads held high, and so can
their children after them." And the children said, "You will always
walk with us, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates."
And they
stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gates closed
after her. And they said: "We cannot see her, but she is with
us still. A Mother like ours is more than a memory. She is a living
presence."
Your
Mother is always with you. She's the whisper of the leaves as
you walk down the street, she's the smell of certain foods you
remember, flowers you pick and perfume that she wore, she's the cool
hand on your brow when you're not feeling well, she's your breath in
the air on a cold winter's day. She is the sound of the rain that
lulls you to sleep, the colors of a rainbow, she is Christmas
morning. Your Mother lives inside your laughter. And she's
crystallized in every tear drop. A mother shows every
emotion......... happiness, sadness, fear, jealousy, love, hate,
anger, helplessness, excitement, joy, sorrow..... and all the while,
hoping and praying you will only know the good feelings in life.
She's the place you came from, your first home, and she's the map
you follow with every step you take. She's your first love, your
first friend, even your first enemy, but nothing on earth can
separate you. Not time, not space............... not even death!
PASS THIS ON TO ALL THE MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS AND SONS YOU
KNOW... MAY WE NEVER TAKE OUR MOTHERS FOR GRANTED

It is with much sorrow that
I report that our Sister Barbara Kramer of Lakeside

spite of deteriorating eye sight, agreed to serve as a Star Point

request. Sister Barbara was a loving and devoted member of Eastern
Star, and she will be greatly missed by all who had the good fortune
of knowing and working with her.

Mayo ...
Most
people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured
in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment
scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port
of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.
This would have been the largest single shipment of
mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But, as we know, the great ship did
not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo
was forever lost.
The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise,
and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss.
Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning,
which they still observe to this day.
The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th
and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

It's a fact ...
In the late 1899's, hunters sought
great egrets during breeding season for their showy plumes. First-year
juveniles are nearly identical to adults except only breeding adults sport
long tail plumes. And now you know!!!

Rada Uphus Chapter #208 O.E.S.
Submitted by Vincent DiGiulio PP Sentinel
Well another month has passed us by
and we are now approaching the summer months. To all who have attended the
Meetings under the guidance of our new Worthy Matron "Jeanne", at our
new location in Bothell, I wish to say Thank you. The social times after
the meetings seem to be getting longer which I believe is great. We all are
sharing ideas, memories, and more especially some of the greatest company
anyone can ever desire. Brothers and sister of Rada Uphus there is no
better family than that which I believe has developed out of the compassion
and careering each and every member of the Chapter has for each other.
Granted there are differences but that is part of life and I must pat
everyone on the back for setting their differences aside and being there for
each other. These are my observations and those of others who have
commented on the fun had, after the meetings end, in the Social Hall. So to
all who have not yet attended a meeting I urge you to join us for a very
enjoyable evening. Don't forget the Day we now meet is the 1st and 3rd
Tuesday of the month there are no formal meetings in July and August and
only 1 meeting in June and that is June 6th.

Eastern Star ring and other
things ...
Hi Connie,
I just read the latest edition
of the Stars of Washington and was interested in the letters regarding
the way that we should wear our Eastern Star rings. My dad told me to
wear it so the white point was toward my body that way when someone
asked to see the ring you would have to turn your hand up with your fist
closed - thus preventing the possibilty of someone pulling the ring off
your finger.
Dad also impressed on me to have
my Eastern Star emblem on my car at all times in case I did break down
while on the road. It works. Not only have I helped a member who had a
break down but also when I had to help a friend who was new to our area
and had been called to meet with a State Patrol officer on I-5 ( to pick
up her nephew) . She did not get the direction to travel (North or
South). It was at night and as I headed north on I-5 I spotted the
trooper but it was to late to pull off the road so after doing an exit
turn around and finally pulling in front of the trooper - his comment
to me was - 'I saw you go by as I saw your Masonic emblems".

wonderful prelude to the celebration of Worthy Grand Matron, Ann, and Worthy

forward to the excellent ritualistic work from our members, and encourage
everyone to compete, either in an individual category, or as part of a team.
A member may compete in only one individual or

competition are not required to be from the same Chapter. Nothing would
please us more than to welcome a record number of competitors and to have each
chapter represented at this year’s competition.
The registration
deadline is June 1, so there is still time to submit your registration form
and to fine-tune your favorite part before the competition on June 25. And,
we’re anxiously waiting to hear from some of you who have told us you plan to
compete. Can you hear my mailbox beckoning!

A
Little Something For or About Masonry
Contributed by Howie Wynia
Over
the centuries many well known men have been members of our Noble Craft. For
a few moments, please allow your imaginations to run wild and consider what
may take place at the Installation of The Celestial Lodge, otherwise known
as the Grand Lodge Above.
Even
though it was late fall, there was a warm breeze blowing and the sun was
setting behind the Lodge Hall. Gathered in the parking lot filled with their
works were Bros Henry Ford, Ransom Olds, Walter Chrysler, John Willys and
Andre Citroen. The only vehicle missing was Bro Hart
Massey's tractor.
Greeting
members in the entrance hall was Bro Cliff Arquette of Charley Weaver fame
and Bro Ed Wynn. In the boardroom, a group of senior DeMolays were gathered
including Bros Walter Disney, Chet Huntley, Wendell Corey, Van Johnson,
Robert Cummings, John Steinbeck, Fred McMurray and John Cameron Swayze.
King
Gillette, razor in hand, passed the lodge caretaker who was having a minor
problem with his vacuum cleaner, which was quickly cleared up with the help
of its inventor, Bro Frank Hoover, while at the other end of the hallway
Bros Emmett Kelly, Clyde Beatty and all seven of the Ringling
Bros were discussing the Shrine Circus.
Taking
a quick look into the Banquet Hall, Bros John Molson, Frederick Pabst and
Joseph Schlitz were busy rolling in some kegs of beer for Bros Sam Bronfman,
late President of Seagrams Distillers, who was setting up the bar for the
Festive Board to follow the Ceremony. Bro Colonel
Harland Sanders was cooking up a storm in the kitchen and it was an easy
guess as to what the evening meal would consist of.
The
orchestra members for the dance to follow the Banquet were tuning. Members
of this All-Star group included leader Paul Whiteman, WC Handy, Nat King
Cole, Irving Berlin, George M Cohan, Cyril Stapleton, Duke Ellington, Louis
Armstrong, Count Basie and Al Jolson. Tonight's performance would be M.C.ed
by Bros Arthur Godfrey and Danny Thomas. Magical Bros Harry Houdini and
Harry Blackstone were setting up their props while Bros WC Fields, Oliver
Hardy, Bud Abbott, Harpo Marx, and Foster Brooks were fine tuning their
comedy routines for tonight's show which was being produced by Bros Cecil B
DeMille, Flo Ziegfeld, Louis B Mayer, Hall Wallis and DW Griffiths.
A
number of sports celebrities were gathering together, including Bros Abe
Saperstein, creator of the Harlem Globetrotters, who was explaining his
version of the game to Bro James Naismith, the inventor of the game. They
were joined by baseballers Bros Charles Ebbetts, Ty Cobb, Branch Rickey and
Cy Young, the first pitcher to be inducted into the Baseball
Hall of Fame.
A little further along the hall was an array of masons dressed in knee
breeches, lace cuffs and powdered wigs, others in tuxedos, including Bros
Kit Carson, Davey Crockett and Buffalo Bill Cody, clad in their familiar
buckskins, Chiefs Crazy Bull, Tecumseh and Joseph Brant in their native
attire. Most colorful are the military uniforms of Lord Nelson, Lord
Cornwallis, Captain James Cook, the Duke of Wellington and John Paul Jones.
I
was gazing in awe at these members of Celestial Lodge, when the Grand
Master, MW Bro Harry Truman, appeared from the preparation room accompanied
by Bros John Jacob Astor, Luther Burbank, JC Penney, Adlai Stevenson and
Jennings Bryan.
Bro
John Diefenbaker had just signed the Tyler's Register with one of Bro John
Shaeffer's pens. He was accompanied by Bros Robert Borden and RB Bennett.
fellow Canadian Prime Ministers, and by Bro Joe Smallwo od of Newfoundland.
At
this time, the Tyler, Bro J Edgar Hoover, informed the brethren that the
meeting was about to come to order. On entering the lodge room the brethren
were greeted by the Inner Guard, Bro Paul Revere. Seated already were polar
explorers, Robert F Scott of England and Bro Richard E Bird of the United
States, together with Matthew G Perky and Canada's Henry Larsen. Bro Charles
Lindbergh could be seen in deep conversation with Bros Hap Arnold, Gus
Grissom, Eddie Rickenbaker and Charles Kingsford-Smith.
From the Junior Warden's station came a burst of laughter. Bro Will
Rogers had brought broad smiles to the faces of the Royal personages
gathered around him, including George 1, Frederick the .Great, Gustav V of
Sweden and George VI. To the right of the Junior Warden's chair, architect
Sir Christopher Wren was joined by Statue of Liberty sculptor Frederic
Bartholdi.
Bros Norman Vincent Peale and Peter Marshall, who would assume the
Chaplain's duties this evening, were in conversation with the DuPonts, Peter
and Victor, and the Rothschilds, James and Nathan.
Gathered
around the Secretary's desk, Bro Rudyard Kipling was discussing the
evening's proceedings with Bro Robert Burns, who was to give one of the
Charges assisted by Bro Mark Twain. Also taking part were Bros Conan Doyle,
Walter Scott, Samuel Johnson, Alexander Pope and Robert Service.
The Grand Organist, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was discussing last
minute changes with Bros Gilbert and Sullivan.
Bros Clark Gable, Peter Sellers, Wallace Beery, Douglas Fairbanks and
Brian Donleavy were discussing boxing with champions Jack Dempsey, Jack
Johnson and Sugar Ray Robinson. Another small group, in the persons of Bros
John Wayne, Hoot Gibson and Tom Mix, were listening to Bro William Thaddeus
Phillips, also known as Butch Cassidy.
The
founding members, Bros George Washington, Sir John A MacDonald, Guiseppe
Garibaldi, Benito Jaurez, John Hancock and Ben Franklin were seated in the
East. They have been joined by Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore.
The Generals, Omar Bradley, Jimmy Doolittle, George
C Marshall, John Pershing and Douglas McArthur, take their seats next to
Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill.
The Lodge Treasurer, Bro Henry Knox was busy collecting dues from Bros
Thomas E Dewey and William McKinley. The Master, MW Bro HRH The Duke of
Connaught, has rapped the gavel to call the Lodge to order and it is now
time for us to depart.
With one last took at this brilliant assembly, one wonders what the
public's perception of Freemasonry might be if they were able to visit such
a lodge.

NOW WE KNOW WHY PARENTS ARE SCREAMING FOR BETTER EDUCATION FOR OUR
KIDS
** Shared by June Liles of NC
I can remember writing an excuse for
one of our sons on the day of Halloween. 'Please excuse Doug from classes
yesterday. He was practicing up being a were-wolf for Halloween! ' Son
never thought it THAT funny so I had to rewrite it with the correct
information!
LOWRY'S HINTS
HINT 1: Did
you forget to turn the coffee off again? Don't ruin the carafe by scrubbing
with harsh cleansers, add a few teaspoons of salt and some crushed ice. Let
it sit for a minute, then swirl the mixture. Most of the burnt coffee should
come off, the rest will be loosened so that it will wipe out fairly easily.
* * * * * * * * * *
HINT 2: Burnt Rice!
Don't throw it away.... If you burn a pot of rice, place a slice of white
or "light" bread on the top of the rice. Let it sit for a few minutes
(5-10). The burnt taste will be gone but be sure NOT to scrape the bottom
of the pan. Just use as much as you can without touching the bottom.
* * * * * * * * * *
HINT 3: Kick the
soda and coffee from the drive through window habit. If you must have
something to drink in the car, take it with you from home. It's cheaper to
make coffee yourself or buy soft drinks from the grocery than to buy it on
the go.
* * * * * * * * * *
HINT 4: Place a
clove of garlic in plant soil to eliminate bugs. The garlic keeps the
nasty bugs away and will also grow along with your plants.
* * * * * * * * * *
HINT 5: When planting vegetables, such as radishes,
carrots, onions etc., try sprinkling some coffee grounds in the soil
first and then plant your seeds. From time to time, even your garden
needs a little pick-me-up. Well, why not coffee? Coffee grounds
can really perk things up in the garden--if you serve it up just right!
This should keep the worms away and is also a good fertilizer.
* * * * * * * * * *
HINT 6: To keep your garden tools from rusting,
always wipe them off after using and apply a thin coat of baby oil to
them. The next time you use them, the dirt will wipe off very easily.
RECIPES
Fresh Mushroom Soup
16 ounces Portobello mushrooms
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter or margarine
2 cups mushroom, chicken or beef broth
1 cup heavy cream or half-and-half
1/4 cup water
1 Tablespoon flour
2 cups cooked small pasta
1 teaspoon Creole seasoning
Salt and pepper to taste
Clean the mushrooms with a mushroom brush or damp paper towel and
finely chop. Sauté the mushrooms in the butter in a saucepan over
medium-high heat for 10 to 15 minutes or until the liquid evaporates.
Add the broth and bring to a slow boil, stirring occasionally; reduce
the heat.
Whisk the heavy cream, water and flour in a bowl until blended and
add the cream mixture gradually to the mushroom mixture, stirring
constantly to avoid lumps. Stir in the pasta. Add additional flour for
a thicker consistency or additional water for a thinner consistency if
desired.
Simmer just until heated through, stirring occasionally. Season
with Creole seasoning, salt and pepper. Ladle into soup bowls. You may
substitute any variety of mushrooms for the Portobello mushrooms.
NOTE: A light cream-based soup. For a lighter version, reduce the
butter to two Tablespoons and substitute another eight to twelve
ounces of broth for the cream. SERVES: 4

Removing Oven-Cleaner
Goop: To get it off oven walls, use a short-handled window squeegee to
move the goop to the center of the oven bottom. Then scoop it onto newspaper
and toss in the garbage.
-
Organizing the Laundry
Room: To reduce the amount of time in sorting laundry, place several
plastic baskets or bins in the laundry room and label them — darks, lights,
towels, and sheets. All family members will know exactly where to put their
dirty clothes.
-
Cleaning Make-Up
Brushes: Run water over the dirty brushes first and then pour a bit of
hair shampoo or a commercial cleaner over them and rub with your fingers.
Rinse very well and air-dry. Clean them often because they can harbor
bacteria.
-
Quick Toilet
Cleaning:
Sprinkle 1/4 cup
of baking soda into a wet bowl. Jump in the shower, and when you're done,
give the toilet a single scrub. Flush and the cleaning task is complete.
