A BIT LATE BUT ....

"Who Is St. Patrick And What Does The Shamrock Mean?"

Around 390 AD, Patrick was born in Scotland. At 16, the Ard-Ri, High King of Ireland, crossed the sea and captured his village. Patrick was taken to
Ireland, sold as a slave, and sent to be a shepherd for six years.  He studied religion, and turned to God during his captive years. After escaping, he struggled home, later to return and spread Christianity to Ireland as a missionary. He used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. Patrick was ordained a Bishop in 431. He’s believed to have died on March 17, 493 AD, and is buried at Downpatrick.

Hope that you had A Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Lowry thought you might find this interesting!  And me, too!

TEXAS MASONIC HISTORY ...   My great great grandfather was the Mason who brought the special dispensation from the Grand Lodge of Louisiana to Anson Jones for the first Lodge in Texas. I was fortunate that when I was doing the genealogy work on my Russell family that the Grand Lodge of Texas sent me confirmation of Alexander Russell's part in establishing Holland Lodge. Holland Lodge was originally in Brazoria. I would be skeptical about Santa Ana attending Lodge there since he was considered an enemy.
    Susannah Dickinson was allowed to leave the Alamo during the attack there. The reason why she was allowed to pass through the Mexican lines is because William Travis tied his Masonic apron on her and the Mexican officers recognized it and allowed her to pass on.
    The five presidents of the Republic of Texas were all members of Holland Lodge.
** Catherine Russell Davidson,AM,PMx3, Siloam #463, Oklahoma City OK  GGC

    Thank you for the extra tidbit of Texas history regarding Susanna Dickerson getting through the Mexican lines. As to Santa Ana attending Lodge meetings, the Lodge historians tell me this is true. That's why they didn't kill him, but let him escape; he made a Masonic sign for distress.

SIXTH ANNUAL OES CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT

    The Sixth Annual OES Charity Golf Tournament scheduled for Friday, August 11th at Whispering Firs Golf Course on McChord AFB is off to a running start.  Sponsorships for holes are coming in every day.  Six chapters (Delta, Southgate, Olympia, Trinity, Sunshine & Grand Coulee Dam) as of March 8th have responded with sponsorships.  A check of the past three years (2003-05) hole sponsors shows that there are 12 chapters and 5 Scottish Rite Valleys that have sponsored a hole or a partial hole each of those years.  I took the first two years records off my computer so don’t have those.  Thought I wouldn’t need them anymore.  I’m sure severl of the 12 sponsored those two years as well.

    Registration information for the golfers will be available by the end of March.  Check the OES Website (www.washingtonoes.org) after that, as the form will be available there to download.  A sponsorship form will be on the website as well.  Any questions regarding the 2006 tournament can be sent to OESgolf@comcast.net

GIVE YOUR BIRDS A SWIMMIN' HOLE

    Do you want to attract some new and different birds to your backyard? Add a source of water! When most people think of providing water to birds, they think of a birdbath. But there are many other ways to quench your birds' thirst and offer a water play area. You can attach drippers and misters to your birdbath, or you can hang a mister in a bush.
  • Birdbaths come in many shapes, sizes and materials. You can place a birdbath on the ground, mount it on a pedestal or hang it from a tree or deck. Birds like bathing and drinking in different water depths, so consider placing a piece of stone in one end of the birdbath so smaller birds can access the water.
  • You can attach a dripper to your birdbath and provide a source of moving water - which backyard birds find irresistible! You'll need to be sure you place the dripper near an outlet so you can plug it in and near a water source that you can turn on and off. What you'll see will delight you! Many birds, such as chickadees, finches and titmice, will land on the dripper spout and creep down to the end and lean over to take a drink!
  • You can hang a mister in shrubbery or on a tree. Birds can "leaf-bathe" by fluttering their wings against the wet foliage. Some birds also may fly in and out of the mist.
  • Whatever source of water you decide to provide for your birds, it's important that you keep it clean. Replenish water often, and scrub birdbaths and accessories as needed to prevent bacteria from building up.

   Last evening March 14th, at Fellowship Chapter 61 there were 5 Candidates taking their degrees 2 from Fellowship and 3 from Research Chapters.  The MKM

and PM Degrees were conferred.  MEC Jim Stevens conferred the MKM Degree with a team made of members from Research, Overlake, Fellowship,  and

University Chapters.  I don't think I left anyone out.  VEC Glen Wilson Conferred the PM Degree with the same Chapters participating.  All went well and

following the Degrees it was announced that there would be the MEM Degree held at Research Chapter in Snohomish on April 7th and one at University Chapter

on May 10th for those unavailable for the April Degree work.  Companions if you have any candidates in need of this Degree here are 2 dates that hopefully

can be fit into their schedules.  The host for the RAM Degree is yet to be decided but it was suggested that it be held at the RAM Park this coming July.

Is their any input for this idea among the Chapters, The Grand Officers, and Grand Chapter Committee Members.
       Before I close I wish to Thank All who participated and attended the making of this Degree work a success.  There was by my count including the

Candidates approximately 30 members in attendance.

LOWRY'S HINTS

HINT 1:  Keeping Wicker Looking Like New....  To keep wicker furniture from turning yellow, wash with a solution of warm salt water. To prevent it from
drying out, apply lemon oil every so often. Don't let your wicker freeze because it will cause splitting and cracking.
                    * * * * * * * * *
HINT 2:  Taking Care of Hardwood Floors: Clean hardwood floors, By filling a spray bottle with one part vinegar to three parts water. Mist the floor and
use a sponge mop to clean. The mop doesn't get soggy, but the floors still get clean.
                    * * * * * * * * *
HINT 3: Dilute It...... Liquid soap is handy and a lot less messy for the bathroom, but it can seem pricey when you buy it. To keep the cost down, dilute it with water, in the ratio of 1/3 water to 2/3 soap. It still has plenty of cleaning power and you're paying a third less for it.
                    * * * * * * * * *
HINT 4:  Here are a couple of good hints for Veggies:  Peppers: When buying fresh peppers, choose those that are a little wrinkled but with no blemishes. Wrinkling indicates ripeness.
                    * * * * * * * * *

HINT 5:  Corn: When boiling corn, cook for 3 minutes; any more time will only boil out the flavor. Instead of adding a pinch of salt to the boiling water, add a pinch of sugar to bring out the natural sweetness of the corn.

                    * * * * * * * * *
HINT 6:  If you are on prescription drugs, ask for samples since she/he carries a large assortment of products (compliments of the drug companies).

HELOISE
  • Grease on Tablecloth:  To remove large amounts, first sprinkle cornstarch or talcum powder onto the stain and pat in. When grease is absorbed, brush off. Use a prewash spray to further treat any remaining stain and then wash in the hottest water okay for the fabric (check care label). Check the stained area before putting into the dryer to make sure stain is gone. If not, give it a second treatment.

  • Hem Comes Undone:  If you are away from home, use these ideas for a quick fix: masking tape, safety pins or stapler. At home, you can repair the fallen hem with fabric glue, iron-on fusible tape or good old thread.

  • How to Make a Good Cup of Coffee: Start with fresh cold water. Use the correct of amount of coffee (usually 2 teaspoons per cup) and choose the proper grind for the method of brewing. Drink coffee when it's fresh (if it sits around too long, it doesn't taste good). Wash coffeepot as often as you can — don't let coffee oils build up.

  • Computer Keyboard Dirty?  Shut computer off and disconnect keyboard. Turn the keyboard upside down and shake carefully to dislodge crumbs in between the keys. Then use the brush attachment of the vacuum to suck out any remaining bits. Use a small, soft, clean make-up brush for additional dusting. If keys are sticky, a lightly dampened cloth can remove the surface grime. Let dry before reconnecting to the computer.

  • Garage Smells Bad?  First, find the source of any obviously stinky thing. To keep it smelling better, put several drops of cinnamon or clove oil on a cotton ball. Drop this into a plastic bag and poke some holes in it, so the scent can be released. Hang with a paper clip in the areas you want to freshen.

SOME JOKES

    Have you ever been guilty of looking at others your own age and thinking, "Surely I can't look that old!" Well, you're gonna love this one
    I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist when I noticed his diploma hanging on the wall. It bore his full name and I suddenly remembered a tall, handsome, dark-haired boy with the same name. He had been in my high school class some 40-odd years before and I wondered if he could be the same guy I had a secret crush on way back then??
    When I got into the treatment room I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was much too old to have been my secret crush... or was he???
    After he examined my teeth I asked if he had attended Morgan Park High School. "Yes, I did. I'm a Mustang!" He said, gleaming with pride.
    "When did you graduate?" I asked.
    "1962. Why do you ask?" he answered.
    "Well, you were in my class!" I exclaimed.
    Then that ugly, old, wrinkled up old geezer said, "What did you teach?"

    On the way back to New York as I was sitting in the Phoenix airport, they announced that the flight to Vegas was full. The airline was looking for volunteers to give up their seats. In exchange, they'd give you a $100 voucher for your next flight and a first class seat in the plane leaving an hour later. About eight people ran up to the counter to take advantage of the offer.
    About 15 seconds later all eight of those people sat down grumpily as the lady behind the ticket counter said,
    "If there is anyone else OTHER than the flight crew who'd like to volunteer, please step forward..."

    A German spy is sent to Ireland during World War II. The German is instructed to meet an Irish spy named Murphy and confirm Murphy's identity by saying, "The weather could change by Tuesday."
    After the German parachutes into Ireland, he sets off for town. Along the way, he asks a farmer where he might find a man named Murphy.
    "Well, sir, it all depends on which Murphy," says the farmer. "We have Murphy the doctor, Murphy the postal carrier, Murphy the stone mason and Murphy the teacher. As a matter of fact, I, too, am Murphy, Murphy the farmer."
    The German gets an idea.
    "The weather could change by Tuesday," he says.
    "Aye," says the farmer, "you'll be wanting Murphy the spy."
