MESSAGE FROM OUR WORTHY GRAND MATRON, ANN GATES

The Grand Chapter of Washington has purchased a brand new Website www.washingtonoes.org and are we excited.  The committee working on this has done a phenomenal job in just a short two-week timeframe.  I cannot thank them enough for their many hours of work and what they have accomplished.
We really would like everyone to take time to look at the new Website, which is very easy to move around in.
There are still pieces of the Website that are works in progress, so please be patient.  However, the committee welcomes any suggestions.
** Ann Gates, WGM

HEALTH UPDATE

I received an email from Kathi Dewey this past Tuesday evening and I cannot find it for the life of me.  The email was in regards to PGM Nancy Jo Tutino's heart procedure which was done earlier in the day.  Apparently, all went well and Sister Nancy Jo returned home later in the evening.  So since I have heard no more, I will consider it as no news is good news!

SADNESS

This evening I was informed that our beloved Sister Anna Banka had passed away last night.  She was Zillah Chapter's Ruth for as many years as I have been an Eastern Star member, except for this past year when failing health prevented her from remaining in the office.  I will always remember her wonderful kind and gentle ways and will miss her terribly.  She leaves children and I am sure that they would appreciate cards.

MESSAGES FROM MY MAIL BOX

Hi Everyone:
Mom (Evelyn McDonald) received good news today (Tuesday).  Her doctor has released her from the hospital and she is being transferred Wednesday, March 8th to Judson Park in Des Moines for further rehab.  After 5 weeks in the hospital she is ready to leave.
All the IV's and oxygen have been removed and she is keeping her oxygen level at 92%.  Now she needs to get her strength back after being on a ventilator for two weeks.  She keeps reminding us that she is not ready to die.
We'd like to thank everyone for their prayers, cards, phone calls, and visits to my Mom.  Eastern Star members are a great source of support and encouragement during an illness. Thank you for caring.

MANY, MANY THANKS! ...
I would like to THANK all of my OES Sisters and Brothers for your support, help, encouragement, and GUIDANCE during my FIRST term as a Worthy Matron.  I've had more fun than should be legal.   I've met more wonderful people than I could have dreamed.   Through all of your thoughts was woven a common thread:  LOVE ONE ANOTHER!     In this 100th year for Alpha Chapter #88, is a concept that burns as true today as it did 100 years ago:    there is MUCH to be learned from being an OES member and MANY MORE WOMEN AND MEN who will benefit from its teachings.....let's find a way TODAY to have this organization be vital for TOMORROW!

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
On Saturday PGM Sylvia Webster (Colorado) was moved from the hospital to Kenton Manor Nursing Home in Greeley for care and rehab.
This afternoon Darlene Proctor and I visited Sylvia and found her trying to adjust to her new surroundings.  The staff is going to brief and advise her on their procedures to help her acclimate to the nursing home on Monday.  As you all can understand she is depressed at her weakened condition.  Her throat is starting to heal so she can now eat some soft items.  She continues to have the intestinal infection but the nurse seemed to indicate that it is getting a little better.
There is not any predicted length of stay in the nursing home at this time.  She continues to need our thoughts, prayers and cards.  She is still not up to visitors.
Her address is:
     Kenton Manor
     850 27th Ave
     Greeley, CO  80634
She can only be reached on her Cell Phone and the number is:     1-970-396-5316

Please welcome a new Chapter in Northern California, the first in over 25 years. Yes, it happened despite some snow and chain requirements. Many members had gone up the day before and many more braved the weather and went for it. It has been about 25 years since I had driven with chains but we made it up and back without any problems.
When WGM Norma and WGP Mike arrived to inform the new members that the Grand Officers were still in Redding, 45 miles and one snowy mountain east of Weaverville, they were so surprised at the number of prospective members and visitors they couldn't disapoint the new Chapter. So volunteers were signed up, a long skirt was loaned to Norma to hide her boots, and we initiated over 25 new members, instituted Trinity Star Chapter UD, and installed their corp of
officers. The working corp of officers was made up of DGMs, WMs, WPs, PMs, PPs, and other Officers from many Chapters.
It was beautiful. I was honored to serve as Marshal for both Initiation and Installation.
The new Worthy Matron had been initiated 43 years ago to the day, started up the line, and had to move when she was Associate Matron. Now, 34 years later, she had completed her journey to the East and been installed as Worthy Matron.
And to top off the day, Norma and Mike announced the new Grand Representative of Missouri in California. He is Bob McElroy of Paradise Chapter. A real super gentleman. His wife Peg was the Special DGM who worked with the new Trinity Star members to help them organize the new Chapter.
WGM Norma and WGP Mike are going to try to return on April 29th with the Grand Officers to perform another Initiation for the Chapter. Many of us plan to return with them.

I received a phone call this evening that Sister Molly Murphy (PWM of my own Mizpah Chapter here in Brisbane) is in the hospital, and the doctors have found cancer.  I do not have many details yet - and intend to visit her this weekend at Greenslopes Hospital.  Sister Murphy is a member of the Rainbow "Pot of Gold" (excuse me if I don't state it properly as I am not a former Rainbow member), and is personally known to many in Washington State.  Her spirits are excellent.  In fact she is trying to get the corrective surgery done ASAP so that she can make it to the Queensland Grand Chapter at the end of the month (determined she might be - but it may be too much even for her!).  She was very surprised to learn that Nancy Jo Tutino was in the hospital herself, and typically Molly - she wanted to let Nancy know she was thinking of her.
Connie - Please add this to your next STARS newsletter so that her Washington (and other) friends know.

Hi Connie,

On March 1st at a regular stated meeting of Kirkland Chapter, twelve members of Century Chapter paid Kirkland a visit for the purpose of gaining possession of the King County Traveling Gavel.

For those who are not familiar with the KC Traveling Gavel, it has been in existence for over 20 years. It is a wonderful way to promote visitations between Chapters. It can only be acquired by having 10 or more members of the visiting Chapter present at a regular stated meeting. It cannot be on a night set aside for anything special, ie, honor night.

Once you have it in your possession, the Worthy Matron & Patron's name and date of acquisition are to be added to the list, and should be announced as I am doing here, or at any Chapter meetings you are attending, that it is in your Chapters possession.

Century is inviting anyone in King County to come and visit us during the next year, and try to obtain it for your Chapter.

** Linda Hays, Assoc. Matron Elect

PURIM

Book of Esther …    Biblical book from the HAGIOGRAPHA. The Book of Esther relates how a Jewish woman, Esther, became the wife of King Ahasuerus of Persia. Encourged by her uncle, Mordecai, she foiled the plans of the grand vizier, HAMAN, who sought to destroy the Jewish community. An addition to the book is found in the APOCRYPHA. Composed in c.350 BCE, the Book of Esther reflects the conditions of the Jews in the Persian Empire. It is read in entirety in the SYNAGOGUE on the FESTIVAL of PURIM

Overview: Purim History

The Book of Esther recounts the story of Purim, telling of how the Jews of Persia were saved from destruction. During the time of King Ahasuerus, one of his ministers, Haman, sought to destroy the Jews in revenge for being snubbed by the Jew Mordecai, who refused to bow down to him. With the king's authority, he draws lots (pur) to determine the fateful day, which falls on the 13th of the month of Adar.
Learning of this decree, Mordecai approaches the new queen, his cousin Esther, to intercede with the king. Esther, who has not revealed her Judaism publicly, fasts for three days in preparation for this task. At a banquet for the king and Haman, she denounces the evil Haman, who is eventually hanged. Because a royal decree cannot be rescinded--including the decree ordering the extermination of the Jews--Mordecai must send another decree to all the provinces. This letter authorizes the Jews to protect themselves from their enemies. The days following the Jews' struggle with their enemies (the 14th and 15th of Adar) are declared days of feasting and merrymaking, today celebrated as Purim.
Although it provides the blueprint for the festival of Purim, the origins of the Book of Esther remain obscure. The text's style of Hebrew and its lack of corroborating historical information from ancient Persia suggest that the Book of Esther was not authored until well after the time it claims to describe. Nonetheless, the Book of Esther does contain many parallels to various ancient Near Eastern and Greek myths, particularly those of the Babylonian gods Marduk and Ishtar.
Some scholars argue that the Book of Esther adapted stories about these pagan gods--Marduk becoming Mordecai and Ishtar transformed to Esther--to reflect the realities of its own Jewish authors in exile. The period of Greek hegemony in the Land of Israel seems to have offered the social, cultural, and political circumstances for the development of this reinterpreted mythology. The actual text of the Book of Esther is thought to be of late Second Temple authorship, being amongst the latest books to enter the Bible, alongside Ecclesiastes, the Song of Songs, and the Book of Daniel.
The Book of Esther reflects a number of important features of the Persian culture, which are also found elsewhere in the Bible, above all in the book of Daniel. These features, satirized in the Book of Esther, include a mock representation of Persian rites of gluttony, drinking, exuberant public eroticism, abnormal pomp and display of richness, and bowing to idols or men.
There are different versions of the story of Esther in addition to the one that appears in the Hebrew Bible. The Greek versions contain the name of God, which is absent in the biblical story. Josephus, a Jewish historian of the first century of the Common Era, paraphrases the story of Esther in The Antiquities of the Jews.
The holiday of Purim is one of the Jewish tradition's most beloved communal celebrations. By the second century CE, Purim played such a significant role in the Jewish calendar that an entire tractate of the Mishnah (the earliest compiled rabbinic legal work), called  Megillah, was based on the discussion of Purim's proper observance.
A festive meal, packages of food and other small treats offered to friends and family (mishloach manot), and gifts to the poor (matanot la'evyonim) as cited in Esther 9:22 remain key components of traditional celebrations until today. Purim is a holiday where celebrants are obligated to be happy--and to drink until they are unable to tell the difference between Mordecai and Haman (Babylonian Talmud, Megillah 7b). The reading of the Book of Esther from an actual scroll, often an object of special decoration and care, is performed with distinctive cantillation on both the evening and morning of Purim. These readings include numerous ancient customs, among which are jeering and making noise each time the villain Haman's name is mentioned, as well as reciting the names of Haman's ten sons in one breath.
Sarcastic, humorous, and iconoclastic entertainment has become a universal component of Purim celebration. Although written evidence of the Purim shpiel (Yiddish for "Purim play") exists in Europe only from the 14th century, Purim entertainment is likely of ancient origin as well. Since Jewish performers and musicians did not exist as a professional class until the 18th century, Purim shpiels and wedding entertainments are our only source of Jewish popular pursuits for centuries. The biting content of Purim performances and the socializing, mockery, dressing up, and carousing surrounding them often provide an important forum for boundary-crossing on issues of gender, sexuality, authority, and relations with the non-Jewish world. Through satires of the original story in the Book of Esther, Purim performances and religious practices provide an essential and fixed measure of creative release exploring some of the Jewish community's most sensitive topics.
From at least as early as the tenth century, the emergence of "Special Purims"--commemorative days instituted by local Jewish communities employing any number of Purim-related customs--demonstrates Purim's effectiveness as a prototype for engaging larger Jewish concerns in the context of shifting historical events, particularly in the case of communities or families who escaped from serious danger. Both Special Purims and Purim itself have proven particularly useful for adapting traditional Jewish narratives and customs to the changing historical circumstances of the Jewish experience. Each generation has related its own understanding of the Jewish experience to this deceptively simple story of good versus evil and Jewish survival in a distant and hostile land. The myth of Purim lends itself to such reinterpretation because of its timeless and compelling nature.

LOWRY'S HINTS

THRIFTY TIP:  Water Is GOOD and GOOD For You: It is better for you, and much easier on your budget.  At home, the cheapest is your tap water. However, if you prefer Spring water, you can still save money on bottled water by using these tips:
Buy the store brand - do not pay extra for name brands. When your bottles are empty, look for the bottled water machines at your grocery store.
Stock up on small bottles when they are on sale, and reuse them for lunches. At work and when eating out, always order water. It is usually free. If you
take a lunch, take along a bottle of water.

HINT 1:  Tenderize meat with equal parts of strong brewed Tea and double strength beef stock to a tough pot roast or stew. The tannin in tea is a natural meat tenderizer.
        * * * * * * * * * *
HINT 2:  Stop gums from bleeding after having a tooth pulled.  Press a cool, moist flo-thru tea tag against the cavity with your finger. This is a great remedy.

HINT 3: Hang clothes outside if possible or set up a clothes line inside instead of using a dryer. If you do use the dryer, make sure you clean it after every load to reduce energy use.

Dilled Cabbage Potatoes

4 large baking potatoes (2 pounds)

3 cups shredded cabbage

1/2 cup chopped onion

1 tablespoon olive oil or cooking oil

1/4 cup water

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1/2 teaspoon dried dillseed

2 tablespoons margarine or butter

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 to 4 tablespoons milk

   Dairy sour cream

Snipped fresh dillweed or chives (optional)

Scrub potatoes with a brush. Pat dry. Prick skins with a fork. Bake in a 425 degree F oven for 40 to 60 minutes or until tender.  Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan cook cabbage and onion in hot oil for 5 minutes. Add water, soy sauce, and dillseed; bring to boiling. Simmer, covered, about 10 minutes. Cut a thin lengthwise slice from the top of each potato. Using a spoon, gently scoop out pulp leaving a 1/4-inch-thick shell.   In a medium bowl mash potato pulp; stir in margarine or butter, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Stir in cabbage mixture. Add milk to desired consistency. Spoon mixture into shells. Place potatoes in a shallow baking pan. Bake, uncovered, in a 425 degree F oven for 15 minutes or until heated through. To serve, top with sour cream and snipped dill or chives, if desired. Makes 4 side-dish servings.   Make-ahead tip: Prepare stuffed potatoes; cover and chill up to 24 hours. To serve, bake, covered, in 425 degree F oven for 15 minutes. Uncover and bake 10 to 15 minutes more or until heated through. Serve as above.
